NOVI SAD Serbia | Complete Guide with 10 Highlights
Hi and welcome to Novi Sad, the amazing city in Serbia Србија. Novi Sad or Нови Сад as the Serbs call it is a beautiful city in the province of Vojvodina in Northern Serbia that offers everything for travelers: plenty of historic sites in the city, a nice European church, a historic European synagogue, amazing views of the Danube, yummy Southeastern European food and one of the nicest castles in Europe. It is considered by locals and travelers alike as one of the the best places in Serbia to enjoy culture, food and nature. It is a very walkable city and can easily be explored by foot. What I liked most about Novi Sad was the warm atmosphere and the friendly people everywhere. It's a bit off the major tourist maps and has remained one of the very affordable places to visit.

The Novi Sad Raid (1942) – Hungarian Massacre in Serbia during World War II
The 1942 Novi Sad Raid, also known as the Novi Sad Massacre or the Újvidék massacre, was a tragic event that took place during World War II in the city of Novi Sad (Újvidék), located in present-day Serbia. The massacre was carried out by the Hungarian army, which was an ally of Nazi Germany at the time. Novi Sad was under Hungarian occupation as a result of the Axis powers' invasion and dismemberment of Yugoslavia in April 1941. The city had a significant population of ethnic Serbs, Jews, and other non-Hungarian groups. The Hungarian authorities implemented a policy of ethnic persecution and repression, targeting primarily the Serb and Jewish populations. On January 21, 1942, Hungarian forces, led by Lieutenant Colonel László Szabó, launched a brutal raid on Novi Sad. The raid was a respon...

With a population of 250,000 Novi Sad is the second largest city in Serbia and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. It was founded in 1694 when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from the Petrovaradin Fortress, a strategic Habsburg military post. In subsequent centuries, it became an important trading, manufacturing and cultural center, and has historically been dubbed the Serbian Athens. Today, it's an important cultural, industrial and financial center in the country.

If you're looking for good ideas for your next travel, consider putting Novi Sad on your list as it's one of the best places for a Europe trip.

Evropske prestonice kulture.
Stoga, u ovom videu, provešću vas najboljim mjestima ovoga grada i pokazati vam zbog čega je on poseban.

The raid was a response to the increasing anti-Hungarian sentiment and resistance activities in the region. During the raid, Hungarian troops carried out mass arrests, looting, and widespread acts of violence against the civilian population. Many victims were taken to the banks of the Danube River, where they were shot and thrown into the icy waters. The exact number of victims is disputed, but estimates range from several thousand to over 4,000 people.

Jeremy Heimans: What new power looks like
We can see the power of distributed, crowd-sourced business models every day — witness Uber, Kickstarter, Airbnb. But veteran online activist Jeremy Heimans asks: When does that kind of "new power" start to work in politics? His surprising answer: Sooner than you think. It’s a bold argument about the future of politics and power; watch and see if you agree.

Konstantin Danil 1789 - 1873
Konstantin Danil (Serbian Cyrillic: Константин Данил, Romanian: Constantin Dănilă, 1798-1873) was a renowned Serbian painter of the 19th century. He is most famous for his portraits.
Constantine Danil Grigorović, better known as Konstantin Danil, was born in Lugoj in a family with Serbian and Romanian roots, in 1798. Danil Grigorović, Konstantin's father, was a Russian officer under the command of Alexander Suvarov who decided to settle in the city in Timis County in Banat (now western Romania) situated on the banks of the Timiș River, then part of the Austrian Military Frontier.
Konstantin Danil's parents intended him for a literary or learned career, however, he very early showed an interest in art, and at the age of thirteen he left Lugoj for Temișvar, where he executed a drawing which...

Wal Thornhill: An Examination of "Gravitational Waves" | Space News
On February 11, 2016, a team of scientists announced the "discovery" of gravitational waves, or so-called ripples in space/time. Science media have proclaimed the purported discovery a confirmation of a prediction of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. In this Space News, physicist Wal Thornhill begins our coverage of the issue with a skeptical examination of the "discovery" -- a skepticism thus far startlingly absent in science media.

"Among Us" is a popular video game in which a group of colorful, armless astronauts work on a spaceship, accompanied by an "Impostor" who is a shape-shifting alien. The Impostor (who looks identical to the other players) kills off the crew members one-by-one. After each death, the crew has an opportunity to vote one member off the ship, launching them into space to perish in hopes of getting rid of the Impostor. Impostors have the unique ability to travel though a vent system on the spaceship, but must do so without being seen by other players - this puts them at immediate risk of being identified as the Imposter.

Lviv (Ukrainian: Львів [lʲʋiu̯] (About this sound listen); Polish: Lwów [lvuf] (About this sound listen); German: Lemberg; see also other names) is the largest city in western Ukraine and the seventh-largest city in the country overall, with a population of around 728,350 as of 2016. Lviv is one of the main cultural centres of Ukraine.
Named in honor of Leo, the eldest son of Daniel, King of Ruthenia, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia (also called Kingdom of Rus')[2] from 1272 to 1349, when it was conquered by King Casimir III the Great who then became known as the King of Poland and Rus'. From 1434, it was the regional capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship in the Kingdom of Poland. In 1772, after the First Partition of Poland, the city became the capital of the Habsburg Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. In 1918, for a short time, it was the capital of the West Ukrainian People's Republic. Between the wars, the city was the centre of the Lwów Voivodeship in the Second Polish Republic.
After the German-Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939, Lviv became part of the Soviet Union and in 1944–46 there was a population exchange between Poland and Soviet Ukraine. In 1991, it became part of the independent nation of Ukraine.
Administratively, Lviv serves as the administrative center of Lviv Oblast and has the status of city of oblast significance.
Lviv was the centre of the historical region of Galicia. The historical heart of the city, with its old buildings and cobblestone streets, survived Soviet and German occupations during World War II largely unscathed. The city has many industries and institutions of higher education such as Lviv University and Lviv Polytechnic. Lviv is also the home of many cultural institutions, including a philharmonic orchestra and the Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet. The historic city centre is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Pavle "Paja" Jovanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Павле "Паја" Јовановић; IPA: [pâʋlɛ pǎːja jɔʋǎːnɔʋit͡ɕ]; 16 June 1859 – 30 November 1957) was a Serbian Realist painter. He is considered one of Serbia's greatest academic painters. His most famous and recognizable paintings are the Serbian Migrations, the Crowning of Stefan Dušan, the Takovo Uprising, Cockfighting, Decorating of the Bride, and the Fencing Lesson. He also painted many famous portraits. While many of his works can be seen in many European museums across the continent some have been lost, like Furor Teutonicus, a monumental oil on canvas depicting Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
Paja Jovanović was born in Vršac, Voivodeship of Serbia and Banat of Temeschwar, Austrian Empire (today Vojvodina province, Serbia). His father was photographer Stevan Jovanović and his mother was Ernestina Jovanović, née Deot. He spent his childhood and early youth in this town, where he had the opportunity to see the iconostasis of Pavel Đurković and Arsa Teodorović in the town churches. He received his first lectures and knowledge from his teacher of painting, Vodecki. His father took him to Vienna in 1875 when he was 15, where he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in 1877 in the class of the professor Christian Griepenkerl. He finished the Academy of Fine Arts in 1880, attending several important courses taught by Leopold Carl Müller, known as an “orientalist”. In the following period, having noticed greater interest of Europe for the Balkans, he painted mostly scenes from the life of the Albanians, Montenegrins, Herzegovinians, which brought him great reputation. Encouraged to visit the Balkan region during his hiatus, he studied the customs and folklore of the people, and in 1882 he was awarded the prize of the Academy and was given the czar scholarship for the composition The Wounded Montenegrin.
The public and many art critics directed their attention to the young painter, and in 1883 he signed a contract with the London gallery simply named “French”. He continued his travelling through Caucasus, Morocco, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Spain. A great number of sketches, notes, and studies, along with the collected objects from the life of the common people, will find their place in his famous genre-compositions, such as: Fencing, Decorating of the Bride, and Cockfighting. Some of Jovanović's most remarkable praises were gathered at two of his greatest exhibitions: Millennium exhibition in Budapest in 1896, where he prepared Migration of Serbs for entry, but Triptych was sent instead, and the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900, for which he had painted a great historical composition The Proclamation of Dušan's Law.
As early as in 1893 he was proclaimed for the member of the Serbian Royal Academy. He was given the task to make the monumental, historical compositions. After 1905 he devoted himself exclusively to painting the portraits in the style of academic realism for the rich clientele, and he became very famous thanks to them. Some of the most famous include Portrait of the Painter Simington, Portrait of Mihajlo Pupin, Portrait of the Artist's Wife Muni, Portrait of the Sculptor Đoka Jovanović, and others. He painted the portraits of his longtime model and wife, Muni with special care.
He made the iconostasis in the church in Dolovo[disambiguation needed] and Saborna church in Novi Sad, which was painted without commission. He spent most of his time in his atelier in Vienna where he settled, and occasionally travelled to Belgrade. In 1940 he was given the title of the honorary citizen of Vršac, and in 1949 he was given the Order zasluga za narod (Merit for People) of the first category. He lived quietly and lonely, after his wife's early death, in Vienna until his own death in 1957. According to his will, the urn with his ashes was to be moved to Belgrade and where “The Legacy of Paja Jovanović” was opened in 1970, as well in Vršac. Later, in the building of the Old Pharmacy on the Stairs, in 1977 the permanent commemorative exhibition of Paja Jovanović was opened. The works of Paja Jovanović have been kept in the Town Museum of Vršac, along with the exceptionally famous Vršac Triptych. Most of his works and personal belongings can be found in the Town Museum of Belgrade.

About WHAT?
Any subject that is fascinating, extraordinary, uncommonly known but very useful, and true, I demand answers about official stuff I don’t want misrepresented by popular science, first by researching it myself, then by spewing forth my own wild conjecture, and finally seeing how myends up being correct more often than I expect.
HOW?
Research. Great voiceovers of the best things I could find or think about each day. Application of our universal logic, selectively using my exceptionally expensive education, ditching assumptions, identifying propaganda,...

WHY?
To find and share the Truth in a novel, fun, practical way... resulting in comedy- just by examining the veracity of official facts.

Konstantin Danil's parents intended him for a literary or learned career, however, he very early showed an interest in art, and at the age of thirteen he left Lugoj for Temișvar, where he executed a drawing which procured his admission to the school of Arsenije "Arsa" Teodorović (1767-1826). Teodorović was one of the most significant Serbian painters in the 18th- and 19th- century. Danil's master graduated at the Academy of Arts in Vienna, and afterwards he lived in Temișvar and Novi Sad. He painted portraits and altarpieces, and some historical compositions. His style belonged to a progressive, classicistic stream of Serbian art. Teodorović was a principal of a drawing school, and through it he influenced a whole new generation of younger artists, including a few that rivaled him. One of them was Konstantin Danil. Here Konstantin Danil studied for several years, and produced, among other works, a figure of Saint Sava which attracted much attention. The Serbian master gave every encouragement to the young Konstantin Danil for the next four years. Artists had then already started to call Konstantin Danil Grigorović, who was perpetually sketching all sorts of objects in art and in nature, by his father's name Danil. Konstantin Danil, who had by this time acquired so much mastery over the painting technique that his performances were barely distinguishable from Teodorović's own. He now began to explore other avenues to improve his skills.
At the age of seventeen he left Teodorović and went to the atelier of one of three Viennese academicians, then working in Temișvar. Danil also took lessons from itinerant portrait-painters and afterwards entered as a student in the Academy of Arts in Vienna and in Munich. It was in Vienna and Munich, where he became influenced for a while by the works of classicist German painters Asmus Jacob Carstens, Joachim Christian Reinhart, Peter Fendi, Joseph Anton Koch, Gottlieb Schick and Bonaventura Genelli. He also took time to travel and paint throughout Banat and Erdelj (Transylvania). Danil had tried his skill in every genre—in portraiture, landscape, flower-painting, scenes of modern life and figure subjects; his finest works in portraiture and nature mort (still life) rank among the masterpieces of the modern Serbian school. From Munich Danil returned to Veliki Bečkerek (Zrenjanin), where he resumed the style of Teodorović, and shortly afterwards Veliki Bečkerek, the city in the eastern part of Serbian province of Vojvodina, became his permanent residence.
Danil was yet still obscure, but a rich Hungarian nobleman by the name of Stephen von Karácsony soon discovered in him all the stuff of a successful artist, and gave him his niece Sofia Dely in marriage in 1827. This was another turning point in Danil's fortunes. He painted Karacsony, which Karácsony exhibited to all his powerful associates and admiring visitors to his estate. And when the nobleman became a Viceroy of Banat so too, Konstantin Danil's popularity grew. From the Viceroy and other noblemen commissions now flowed in upon Danil.
Having spent much time in the military frontier, and having been with the Austrian troops in actual warfare, he made a specialty of rendering the Military Frontier officers and bordermen as seen on the Potiska and Pomoriška plains. One such portrait of Captain Kljunović and his wife impressed a Serbian Orthodox priest by the name of Arsenović, who selected Danil to decorate the walls, dome and iconostasis of a new Serbian Orthodox church in Pančevo with figures of saints. Upon complition of his commission (iconostasis) in 1833 Danil received an honorarium of 4,000 silver florins.[disambiguation needed] At the same time he produced a series of designs illustrative of Old Testament history.
From 1834 to 1873 Danil threw himself into the renaissance of Biedermeier and the sacral painting based on the school of Vienna Nazarene movement, and became one of its leaders. He worked in his own atelier at 37 Tsar Dušan Street in Veliki Bečkerek where 14 Serbian artists were apprenticed, including our poet-painter Đura Jakšić and artist Lazar Nikolić, who wrote a biography of his teacher. In 1872 his wife, Sofia Dely, died, and a year later (1873), Danil died at Veliki Bečkerek (Zrenjanin) on 13 May.
