Truro, Cornwall flooded as heavy rain follows intense heatwave
Truro has experienced flooding as heavy rain followed a heatwave in parts of the UK.
Videos posted on social media showed vehicles driving through a surge of water in the Cornish town.
Oliver Dobbs, 24, an Oxford University student who was visiting his family in Truro, told the PA news agency: “I’d been out walking to my local park when a torrential downpour started. I asked my step dad to pick me up and when we returned to the city centre the main roundabout was completely flooded. Several cars had stopped due to engine failure.”
When asked if he expected to see flooding occur at the extent it did today, he said: “Not like this. Not seen anything like this having lived in Truro for five years. We heard rain was forecast but didn’t expect a downpour.”

We take a look down the narrow Cathedral Lane with it's lovely views of Truro Cathedral, before heading back down Boscawen Street to the magnificent Coinage Hall, which has a history going back to 1302 and the halcyon days of Cornish tin mining. Finally, we head back up Boscawen Street, then onto King Street to see Truro Cathedral, the first 'new' cathedral to be built in Britain for 800 years since Salisbury Cathedral was started in 1220. Built in the Gothic Revival architectural style fashionable during much of the nineteenth century. Its three spires and amazing architecture dominate the city skyline, making it one of the most iconic buildings in Cornwall. Next we head up Pydar Street, past Truro Library, this beautiful victorian building was opened in 1896 by Passmore Edwards, who donated the money and laid the foundation stone. It's one of six libraries in Cornwall donated by Passmore Edwards. We then take a look at Peoples Palace, just off Pydar Street, and the amazing 'Enjoy Clothing' a vintage and retro clothing store. This wonderfully bright and colourful eclectic boutique, sells unique and retro clothing styles from all over the decades. We then finish our walk by Truro Cathedral.
Truro is a cathedral city and civil parish in Cornwall, England, UK. It is Cornwall's county town, only city, and its centre for administration, leisure and retail. Its population was recorded as 18,766 in the 2011 census. People from Truro are known as Truronians. It grew as a trade centre through its port and as a stannary town for the tin-mining industry. It gained city status in 1876 with the founding of the Diocese of Truro and became mainland Britain's southernmost city. Sights include the Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro Cathedral (completed in 1910), the Hall for Cornwall and Cornwall's Courts of Justice.
Truro's dominant feature is the Gothic-revival Truro Cathedral, designed by architect John Loughborough Pearson, rising 249 ft above the city at its highest spire. It took from 1880 to 1910 to build, on the site of the old St Mary's Church, consecrated over 600 years earlier. Enthusiasts of Georgian architecture are well catered for in the city, with terraces and townhouses along Walsingham Place and Lemon Street often said to be "the finest examples of Georgian architecture west of the city of Bath".
The main attraction for regional residents is a wide variety of shopping facilities. Truro has various chain stores, speciality shops and markets that reflect its history as a market town. The indoor Pannier Market is open all year with many stalls and small businesses. The city is also popular for catering and for night life, with many bars, clubs and restaurants, and it houses the Hall for Cornwall, a performing arts and entertainment venue. Lemon Quay is the year-round centre of most festivities in Truro.
The Royal Cornwall Museum is the oldest and premier museum in Cornwall detailing Cornish history and culture. Its collections cover fields such as archaeology, art and geology. Among the exhibits is the so-called Arthur's inscribed stone. Its parks and open spaces include Victoria Gardens, Boscawen Park and Daubuz Moors.
