Medieval Beginnings: Troilus and Criseyde
Chaucer’s 14th century tale of ‘double sorrow’, Troilus and Criseyde, set during the siege of Troy, is the subject of Irina and Mary’s ninth episode of Medieval Beginnings. Based largely on Boccaccio’s Il Filostrato, Chaucer’s novelistic long poem displays a psychological realism that would make Henry James envious, and, with the matchmaker-uncle Pandarus, introduces a character of startling and often perplexing opacity.

Here we have the Folio Society limited edition of Geoffrey Chaucer’s epic poem 'Troilus and Criseyde', written in middle-english around the mid 1380s
With the siege of Troy as backdrop this courtly romance is not as widely known as Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, although this long poem is finished unlike Canterbury Tales.
This splendid limited edition is a facsimile of the Golden Cockerel Press edition of 1926-27. This book was printed by the Folio Society in 2011 and has sold out. 1250 copies of this edition was made and I have copy number 773.
The book is bound in goatskin leather in Germany, and it’s printed on Rigoletto Panna felt-marked paper. The leather is blocked with an illustration by Eric Gill in gold. The leather is black and soft with a really pleasant touch.
The edges are gilded and a silk ribbon is added. The paper is cream coloured, has a course texture and it is very thick. It’s definitely a fitting paper for an edition like this, although the thickness of the paper makes the binding a bit tight and hard to open.
Eric Gill’s illustrations and design is as stunning as it is sensual. The front cover design is one of the best I own, and it’s hard to keep your eyes from the gleaming gold illustration.
The leather-bound book also comes with two essays in a hardcover volume that is half-bound in buckram with paper sides. The books are secured inside a large buckram clamshell box.
I would love to accompany this edition with it’s counterpart Canterbury Tales limited edition from the Folio Society. It’s really a magnificent facsimile and one of the treasures of my collection.

Troilus and Criseyde is a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer which re-tells in Middle English the tragic story of the lovers Troilus and Criseyde set against a backdrop of war in the Siege of Troy. It was composed using rime royale and probably completed during the mid 1380s. Many Chaucer scholars regard it as the poet's finest work. As a finished long poem it is certainly more self-contained than the better known but ultimately uncompleted Canterbury Tales. Criseyde, the daughter of the seer Calchas, lives alone in Troy after her father abandons the Trojans to help the Greeks. Eventually she catches the eye of Troilus, a man who had previously scoffed at love, and becomes the object of his overwhelming desire. With the help of Criseyde's uncle Pandarus he wins her love but soon loses it when the Greeks and the Trojans conduct an exchange of prisoners. Calchas, who knows of Troy's imminent destruction, persuades the Greeks to exchange Antenor for his daughter and thus saves her from the doomed city. Criseyde promises Troilus that she'll return to him after ten days but once she's back in the care of her father she realizes the impossibility of her promise. Resigned to her fate, Criseyde yields to the flirtations of Diomedes, and her love for Troilus fades. When Deiphobus wins the armor of Diomedes, Troilus discovers a brooch he gave Criseyde upon her departure pinned to it. Heartbroken, he tries to find Diomedes and take his revenge during battle but after slaying many is in his turn killed by
Achilles. As his spirit goes to heaven he reflects on the absurdity of all life itself. (Summary by Wikipedia)

"Troilus and Criseyde" is a narrative poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer, one of the most important English poets of the Middle Ages. The poem was composed in the 1380s and is considered one of Chaucer's major works, showcasing his mastery of Middle English language and his skill in adapting and transforming literary traditions.
The poem is based on the story of Troilus, a Trojan prince, and Criseyde (also spelled Cressida), a Trojan woman. Chaucer's adaptation focuses on the blossoming relationship between Troilus and Criseyde and the challenges they face due to the war and the political intrigue surrounding them.

Chaucer explores the complexities of courtly love, where the idealized love between Troilus and Criseyde is both passionate and fraught with external pressures. The poem also touches on issues of loyalty, the role of the gods in human affairs, and the unpredictability of fortune.
Chaucer's Middle English prose in "Troilus and Criseyde" is rich and intricate, and the poem reflects his skill in portraying characters with depth and psychological realism. The work is divided into five books and employs a rhyme scheme known as rhyme royal.
"Troilus and Criseyde" is renowned for its exploration of human emotions and its nuanced portrayal of love's complexities. It remains a significant work in English literature and provides valuable insights into the literary and cultural context of the Middle Ages. Criseyde, the daughter of the seer Calchas, lives alone in Troy after her father abandons the Trojans to help the Greeks. Eventually she catches the eye of Troilus, a man who had previously scoffed at love, and becomes the object of his overwhelming desire. With the help of Criseyde’s uncle Pandarus he wins her love but soon loses it when the Greeks and the Trojans conduct an exchange of prisoners. Calchas, who knows of Troy’s imminent destruction, persuades the Greeks to exchange Antenor for his daughter and thus saves her from the doomed city. Criseyde promises Troilus that she’ll return to him after ten days but once she’s back in the care of her father she realizes the impossibility of her promise.

"Troilus and Criseyde" is a Middle English narrative poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century. The poem is considered one of Chaucer's major works and is often regarded as a masterpiece of medieval literature. It is a tragic love story set against the backdrop of the Trojan War.
The narrative begins with the narrator, Chaucer himself, addressing his audience and invoking the Muse to help him tell the story of Troilus and Criseyde. The poem is divided into five books, and each book comprises a series of stanzas written in rhyme royal, a seven-line stanza form.
The story revolves around the Trojan prince Troilus and his love for Criseyde, a Trojan woman of great beauty and virtue. The two characters are initially introduced separately, and their love story unfolds gradually. Pandarus, Criseyde's uncle and Troilus's friend, plays a significant role in bringing them together.
Troilus and Criseyde's love grows as they exchange letters and secret glances. However, their happiness is short-lived as Criseyde is later sent to the Greek camp as part of a prisoner exchange. Despite their separation, Troilus remains devoted to Criseyde, while Criseyde, influenced by circumstances and her own desires, eventually yields to the advances of the Greek warrior Diomede.
The poem explores themes of love, fate, and the fickleness of fortune. Chaucer skillfully portrays the characters' inner thoughts and emotions, offering a nuanced and psychological exploration of love and its complexities. The work also includes philosophical reflections on the nature of love and the influence of the stars on human destiny.
The tragic ending sees Troilus's death in battle, and Criseyde's betrayal remains a poignant element of the narrative. The poem concludes with a moralizing epilogue, in which Chaucer reflects on the transitory nature of worldly happiness and the need for spiritual solace.
"Troilus and Criseyde" is admired for its sophisticated use of language, its exploration of human psychology, and its complex characters. Chaucer's work has had a lasting impact on literature and continues to be studied for its insights into medieval culture and its contribution to the development of the English language.
