Triple Alliance World War One - GCSE History Revision
In 1882, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy agreed the Triple Alliance. The three countries promised to defend each other, if one was attacked. This alliance created suspicion in other European countries and Britain and France were concerned over the growing power of Germany. In 1907, Britain, France and Russia agreed their own alliance, the Triple Entente. This split Europe into opposing groups. By August 1914, Germany and Austria-Hungary were at war with Britain and France.

20th May 1882: Establishment of the Triple Alliance
Germany and Austria-Hungary had formed the defensive Dual Alliance in 1879 in which both countries agreed to assist each other if they were attacked by Russia and promised benevolent neutrality to the other in case of war with another nation.
Two years later Italy, which had North African imperial ambitions, was frustrated by France’s seizure of Tunisia. 5 Major Treaties & Alliances in the Build Up to World War One
The First World War is often interpreted as fought between two major alliances – the Triple Entente between France, Britain and Russia, and the Dual Alliance linking Germany and Austria-Hungary.
But this oversimplifies the alliances, treaties and agreements that developed throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and drew the Great Powers, along with numerous other countries, into war.

Battle of Tuyuti 1866 - War of the Triple Alliance DOCUMENTARY
As Spain lost control of its colonial possessions, from the ashes of their old Viceroyalty of the Rio De La Plata the nations we now know as Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay slowly formed. In a small civil conflict between two political parties in the smallest country in the region, Uruguay, the greatest war in South American history was sparked. The War of the Triple Alliance or as it is also often called the Paraguayan war culminated at the battle of Tuyuti fought in 1866. This battle is widely considered the Waterloo of South America.

Wishing to secure a foreign alliance in case of future aggression from France, Italy consequently turned to Germany and Austria-Hungary, expanding their established relationship to form the Triple Alliance in 1882.
The alliance provided Italy with German and Austro-Hungarian assistance in case France chose to attack, in return for which Italy would assist Germany if they were attacked. Meanwhile Austria-Hungary benefited from a guarantee that Italy would remain neutral in case of a war with Russia, removing the risk of a war on two fronts and providing some security amidst the rising tensions in the Balkans.
The alliance was renewed in 1887, 1907 and 1912. Meanwhile, in October 1883, Romania had secretly joined the Triple Alliance. This move was so secret that only King Carol I and a few senior politicians even knew.
However, similar to Italy’s involvement in the agreement, this did not result in Romania joining the Central Powers when war broke out in 1914. Having based their decision on the fact that the first country to take offensive action was Austria-Hungary when it attacked Serbia, both Italy and Romania initially opted for neutrality. They claimed that, since the Triple Alliance was defensive, they were not duty bound to support the aggressor.

SUMMARY
=======
The Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604) was an intermittent conflict between the kingdoms of Spain and England that was never formally declared. The war was punctuated by widely separated battles, and began with England's military expedition in 1585 to the Netherlands under the command of the Earl of Leicester in support of the resistance of the States General to Spanish Habsburg rule.
The English enjoyed some victories at Cádiz in 1587, and saw the Spanish Armada retreat in 1588, but then suffered severe defeats of the English Armada in 1589 and the Drake–Hawkins and Essex–Raleigh expeditions in 1595 and 1597 respectively. Two further Spanish armadas were sent in 1596 and 1597 but were frustrated in their objectives mainly because of adverse weather and poor planning.
The war became deadlocked around the turn of the 17th century during campaigns in the Netherlands, France and Ireland. It was brought to an end with the Treaty of London, negotiated in 1604 between representatives of the new King of Spain, Philip III, and the new King of England, James I. England and Spain agreed to cease their military interventions in the Spanish Netherlands and Ireland, respectively, and the English ended high seas privateering.
