Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is a church located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated State Historic Site. The building was also declared a Milwaukee Landmark in 1967.
Description
Trinity's congregation was founded by German immigrants of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in 1847, and is the oldest church associated with that synod in the city.
The congregation's first building was on 4th Street between Wells and Kilbourn from 1847 through 1851. Its second building, from 1851 to 1878, was at 4th and Wells.
The current building was designed by architect Frederick Velguth in German Romanesque/Gothic Revival style and built in 1878. It uses Cream City brick, a distinct light colored brick manufactured locally, along with sandstone details on the façade. The cruciform structure is 145 feet (44m) long, 89 feet (27m) wide, and 54 feet (16m) tall. It features three towers, the tallest of which is a landmark 200-foot (61m) spire. Notable of the church's interior is the historic Schuelke organ in the rear gallery, containing some 1,600 pipes. The total cost was $43,500, of which $3,500 was for the organ.
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is a Lutheran Church–Canada congregation in Toronto, Canada. It is located at the corner of Sherbourne and Bloor Street in the northeast of the city's downtown. It was originally founded in 1931 as a Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod congregation, the second in the city after St. John's Lutheran Church. It originally catered to German immigrants in the city, and the services were all in German until the Second World War when it was decided to switch to English. After meeting in a number of temporary sites around the city, the church purchased land at Bloor and Sherbourne in 1943 and completed the present building in 1952. Services in German resumed, and as new immigrant groups to Canada arrived services began in other languages including Latvian and Estonian in 1952 and separate Korean services in 1988.
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Manhattan is a Lutheran church located at 164 West 100th Street just east of Amsterdam Avenue, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. It was founded in 1888 as the German Evangelical Lutheran Church to serve German immigrants moving into the Upper West Side. It initially held services in a storefront until money had been raised to buy land and build a sanctuary.
The double-height brick and stone masonry church building was constructed in 1908, and was designed by George W. Conable in the Gothic Revival style. In the 1950s, the building was slated for demolition as part of Robert Moses' urban renewal program, but the parish resisted and eventually, after 10 years, won the battle. It became the only structure within 32 acres (13ha) in its neighborhood not to have been razed by Moses. On September 26, 2009, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Manhattan is often said to be the economic and cultural center of the United States and hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinationalmedia conglomerates are based in the borough. Historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626, for the equivalent of US$1050, Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013.
