Trench coat

A trench coat or trenchcoat is a raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton gabardine drill, or leather, or poplin. It generally has a removable insulated lining, raglan sleeves, and the classic versions come in various lengths ranging from just above the ankles (the longest) to above the knee (the shortest). It was originally an item of clothing for Army officers (developed prior to the war but adapted for use in the trenches of the First World War, hence its name) and shows this influence in its styling.

Traditionally this garment is double-breasted with 10 front buttons, has wide lapels, a storm flap and pockets that button-close. The coat is belted at the waist with a self-belt, as well as having straps around the wrists that also buckle. The coat often has shoulder straps that button-close; those were a functional feature in a military context. The traditional color of a trench coat was khaki, although newer versions come in many colors.

History

The trench coat was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War. Invention of the trench coat is claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum, with Aquascutum's claim dating back to the 1850s. Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, submitted a design for an Army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901.

This material has a great track record of standing up to the elements and therefore, it's also recommended. 02:11 2. When it comes to color, the iconic trench coat has this kind of khaki, camel color. However, you also find trench coats in navy, black, red, green, and basically, any other colors. 02:39 3. Sleeve style. Trench coats come with many different sleeve styles. The two most popular ones are either the raglan sleeves and it's characterized by the fact that the sleeve goes all the way over the shoulder and is sewn together at the back of my neck. The alternative has a shoulder seam right at the shoulder. 03:35 4. Double-breasted trench coat. 03:53 5. Epaulets. Epaulets are these little tabs on the shoulder. This is something that highlights an authentic trench coat. 04:11 6. Gun flap. Originally was used to prevent the garment from getting wet or to actually button over your trench coat like so to prevent the water from running inside and getting it wet. 04:31 7. Hook and the throat latch. It truly allows you to keep everything really closed so you are protected. 04:40 8. D rings on the belt which were actually little rings on the belt of the trench coat which were used for all kinds of things like water bottles, grenades, and anything else that you wanted to carry. 04:52 9. Sleeve straps. They are simply there to make your sleeves tighter to keep out the wind and keep you warm. 05:01 10. Deep yoke back. The reason to have a deep yoke back is to keep the water away from you and to keep you dry. 05:10 11. Wedge back - helps to keep the wind out even if you unbutton it and the buttons are there so you can close it. If you want you can open it if you need a greater range of movement. 05:32 12. Pockets. A real trench coat should have accessible pockets from outside and from the inside. That way, no matter if you wear it buttoned or unbuttoned, you can always reach your pockets. 05:45 13. Leather buckles. Sometimes you can find trench coats with metal buckles but usually they are always covered in leather. Brown or black or whatever works but look for leather buckles. 05:59 14. Checked lining. For example, Aquascutum has a famous blue and kind of mustard yellow lining versus Burberry has a so-called nouveau check which is black, red, and beige and white. 06:47 15. Made in England. If you want to buy a genuine, made in England trench coat, I suggest you go with trench coats pre 1999 from Burberry. Just like with many other garments, it is unclear what the exact history of the trench coat is. Basically, we have Aquascutum, Macintosh, and Burberry all in there. Today, you can find a trench coat in all kinds of variations from different companies in different qualities and different details. The goal of this video is to help you find a trench coat that is as authentic as possible that suits your style. 01:09 So what are the 15 hallmarks of an authentic trench coat? 01:15 1. Today the most popular type of trench coat material is called Gabardine which was invented by Thomas Burberry around the middle of the 19th century. It's a tightly woven fabric that is supposed to withstand rain and keep you dry. Another option that's very popular especially with Burberry's coats is 51% cotton and 49% polyester. This material has a great track record of standing up to the elements and therefore, it's also recommended. 02:11 2. When it comes to color, the iconic trench coat has this kind of khaki, camel color. However, you also find trench coats in navy, black, red, green, and basically, any other colors. 02:39 3. Sleeve style. Trench coats come with many different sleeve styles. The two most popular ones are either the raglan sleeves and it's characterized by the fact that the sleeve goes all the way over the shoulder and is sewn together at the back of my neck. The alternative has a shoulder seam right at the shoulder. 03:35 4. Double-breasted trench coat. 03:53 5. Epaulets. Epaulets are these little tabs on the shoulder. This is something that highlights an authentic trench coat. 04:11 6. Gun flap. Originally was used to prevent the garment from getting wet or to actually button over your trench coat like so to prevent the water from running inside and getting it wet. 04:31 7. Hook and the throat latch. It truly allows you to keep everything really closed so you are protected. 04:40 8. D rings on the belt which were actually little rings on the belt of the trench coat which were used for all kinds of things like water bottles, grenades, and anything else that you wanted to carry. 04:52 9. Sleeve straps. They are simply there to make your sleeves tighter to keep out the wind and keep you warm. 05:01 10. Deep yoke back. The reason to have a deep yoke back is to keep the water away from you and to keep you dry. 05:10 11. Wedge back - helps to keep the wind out even if you unbutton it and the buttons are there so you can close it. If you want you can open it if you need a greater range of movement. 05:32 12. Pockets. A real trench coat should have accessible pockets from outside and from the inside. That way, no matter if you wear it buttoned or unbuttoned, you can always reach your pockets. 05:45 13. Leather buckles. Sometimes you can find trench coats with metal buckles but usually they are always covered in leather. Brown or black or whatever works but look for leather buckles. 05:59 14. One big problem when buying a trench coat is sizing so if you want to buy one, especially on eBay or on other places remotely, make sure you know the measurements. The company has been making trench coats for over 150 years, they've been around since 1856 and it's just an iconic garment. The classic Burberry double breasted trench coat today costs eighteen hundred and ninety five dollars in the Burberry website. Yes, you should definitely go with a double-breasted version because that's the original. The current heritage models they offer have the typical Novacek, they also added it underneath the collar which looks nice if you like it popped up, but also the lining is Novacek. Novacek is a name for a specific tartan that is usually associated with Burberry, although it's also imitated by other companies. Unlike in previous years, this trench coat is made in England as the original one and it is made out of a hundred percent cotton gabardine which is a fabric Thomas Burberry invented or at least became famous and well known for, and it's the ideal material you want for a trench coat. The great thing about a modern Burberry trench coat is that it comes in four lengths as well as four fit styles. Now, the fit of all Burberry trench coats is slimmer than it used to be it's simply an adaptation to modern times which in my opinion, is not a bad thing because you want to trim look that flatters your body line. The relaxed fit is definitely the widest fit they offer and it's made for layering, so if you wear jackets underneath a lot, maybe a sweater or a cardigan, this is the fit you should get. The classic fit is more tapered in the waist yet you can still wear a suit jacket underneath of it. The slim fit is a slimmest fit they offer and it's not meant to be worn with something underneath but it creates a very nice if you shape. Last but not least, there's a tailored fit. the tailored fit is somewhere between a classic fit and a slim fit. In terms of a length, the original trench coat was quite long and ranged from ankle length, all the way up to knee length. Fortunately, it won't go out of style and Burberry is associated with the original. On the other hand, if you want a flattering fit and you want to choose between the different lengths and the fits, and if you have the money, it’s definitely worth it. Trench coat

A trench coat or trenchcoat is a raincoat made of waterproof heavy-duty cotton gabardine drill, or leather, or poplin. It generally has a removable insulated lining, raglan sleeves, and the classic versions come in various lengths ranging from just above the ankles (the longest) to above the knee (the shortest). It was originally an item of clothing for Army officers (developed prior to the war but adapted for use in the trenches of the First World War, hence its name) and shows this influence in its styling.

Traditionally this garment is double-breasted with 10 front buttons, has wide lapels, a storm flap and pockets that button-close. The coat is belted at the waist with a self-belt, as well as having straps around the wrists that also buckle. The coat often has shoulder straps that button-close; those were a functional feature in a military context. The traditional color of a trench coat was khaki, although newer versions come in many colors.

History

The trench coat was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War. Invention of the trench coat is claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum, with Aquascutum's claim dating back to the 1850s. Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, submitted a design for an Army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901.
