Music trackers (usually referred to simply as trackers) are a type of music sequencer software used to create music. They represent music tracks as an arrangement of discrete musical notes positioned in one of several channels, at discrete chronological positions on a timeline. The file format used for saving songs is called a module file.
A music tracker's musical interface is traditionally numeric: both notes and parameter changes, effects and other commands are entered with the keyboard into a grid of fixed time slots as codes consisting of letters, numbers and hexadecimal digits.
Separate patterns have independent timelines; a complete song consists of a master list of repeated and concatenated patterns.
Later trackers departed from module file limitations and advantages, adding other options both to the sound synthesis (hosting generic synthesizers and effects or MIDI output) and to the sequencing (MIDI input and recording), effectively becoming general purpose sequencers with a different user interface.
Module files (MOD music, tracker music) are a family of music file formats originating from the MOD file format on Amiga systems used in the late 1980s. Those who produce these files (using the software called trackers) and listen to them, form the worldwide MOD scene, a part of the demoscenesubculture. Module files are often chiptunes.
The mass interchange of "MOD music" or "tracker music" (music stored in module files created with trackers) evolves from early FIDO networks. Many websites host large numbers of these files, the most comprehensive of them being the Mod Archive.
Nowadays most module files, including ones in zipped form, are supported by most popular media players such as Winamp, VLC, Foobar2000, Amarok, Exaile and many others (mainly due to inclusion of common playback libraries such as libmodplug for gstreamer).
Structure
Module files store several "patterns" or "pages" of music data in a form similar to that of a spreadsheet. These patterns contain note numbers, instrument numbers, and controller messages. The number of notes that can be played simultaneously depends on how many "tracks" there are per pattern. They also contain digitally recorded samples as well as coding for sequencing the samples in playback. The programs that are used to create these files provide composers with the means to control and manipulate sound samples in almost limitless ways to produce music.

OpenMPT: the basics, and how to use trackers
A lot of people have asked me about this whenever I share some of my unreleased electronic music on some servers and the moment they know I use a Tracker - they want to know more about them and how they work. In this guide, I'll show the basics of my favourite Tracker: OpenMPT.

A lot of people have asked me about this whenever I share some of my unreleased electronic music on some servers and the moment they know I use a Tracker - they want to know more about them and how they work. In this guide, I'll show the basics of my favourite Tracker: OpenMPT.
This video is intended for people who are new to Trackers and/or OpenMPT. Hopefully it'll serve as a guide to help as many people get started into using a Tracker. I've been there myself, and Trackers seemed very difficult to understand at first glance, but once you get engaged with them, they become a wonder to work with. I've definitely improved my music and skills a lot ever since I started using OpenMPT, and a lot of people ask me about it whenever I share my music to friends and music servers so I thought I'd do a general guide to explain all of the basics needed to get started. This tutorial is for OpenMPT, but the basic concepts of how a Tracker works should apply to all of them aswell.
Special thanks to Emma Essex for having introduced me into this program and having taught me the basics that got me started on it. I wouldn't be where I am today without their help!

0:00 INTRODUCTION: What's a Tracker? Why use it?
1:00 THE PROGRAM: How to use it? Concepts!
I recently posted a video of a remix I made using VividTracker for iPad. I got a lot of questions about trackers so I decided to make this short video explaining limited experience with this oldskool method of producing rave music.

An Amiga 500, Stereo Master and handful of $1 records from a 1990 Sunday market: Can we make a dance track on a budget home computer? Of course! Back when big-name dance tunes required big-budget-gear, a secondhand Amiga let you take the first steps to making a dance-floor banger.
In an effort to add further focus, Bourne envisaged PlaysBloodMusicVolume 1 as “a mixture of hardware and software jams.” He began by fleshing out material on a Polyend Tracker, SoMA machines and a ...
