The Tours amphitheater also known as the Caesarodunum amphitheater, is a Roman amphitheatre located in the historic city center of Tours, France, immediately behind the well known Tours cathedral. It was built in the first century, and at a time when the city was called Caesarodunum. It was built atop a small hill on the outskirts of the ancient urban area, making it safe from floods, convenient for crowds and visitors, and demonstrating the power of the city from a distance. The structure was an enormous, elliptical structure approximately 122 meters by 94 meters. It is classified as a "primitive" amphitheatre, based on its design. Unlike the famous Colosseum that was made mostly of masonry and built above-ground, the Tours amphitheatre was made mostly of earth and created by moving soil and rock into a bowl shape. Spectators likely sat directly on the grassy slopes, while the masonry was primarily used for the vomitoria and retaining walls.
When it was expanded in the second century (156m x 134 m), it became one of the largest structures (within the top 10) in the Roman Empire. It is not clear why the amphitheater was expanded given the population and slow growth of the city at the time. About 100 years later, this expanded amphitheatre was transformed into a fortress, with an addition of a rampart style wall, typical during the decline of Roman Empire. It gradually fell into ruin during the Middle Ages and canonical houses were built on its structure and gradually concealed it. The vomitoria were at some point transformed into cellars.
Tours (French pronunciation:[tuʁ]) is a city located in the centre-west of France. It is the administrative centre of the Indre-et-Loiredepartment and the largest city in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France (although it is not the capital, which is the region's second-largest city, Orléans). In 2012, the city of Tours had 134,978 inhabitants, while the population of the whole metropolitan area was 483,744.
Tours stands on the lower reaches of the River Loire, between Orléans and the Atlantic coast. The surrounding district, the traditional province of Touraine, is known for its wines, for the alleged perfection (as perceived by some speakers) of its local spoken French, and for the Battle of Tours, which took place in 732. The city is also the end-point of the annual Paris–Tourscycle race.
History
In Gallic times the city was important as a crossing point of the Loire. Becoming part of the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD, the city was named "Caesarodunum" ("hill of Caesar"). The name evolved in the 4th century when the original Gallic name, Turones, became first "Civitas Turonum" then "Tours". It was at this time that the amphitheatre of Tours, one of the five largest amphitheatres of the Empire, was built. Tours became the metropolis of the Roman province of Lugdunum towards 380–388, dominating the Loire Valley, Maine and Brittany. One of the outstanding figures of the history of the city was Saint Martin, second bishop who shared his coat with a naked beggar in Amiens. This incident and the importance of Martin in the medieval Christian West made Tours, and its position on the route of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, a major centre during the Middle Ages.

The Colosseum (ancient name: Amphitheatrum Novum or Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian: Colosseo, Anfiteatro Flavio) is the largest of the amphitheaters built in ancient Rome, the largest enclosed structure of Roman antiquity and further the largest amphitheater ever built in the world. Built between 72 and 80 AD, the Colosseum served as a venue for mostly highly cruel and brutal events, hosted by members of the imperial family for the entertainment and amusement of the free inhabitants of Rome and the Roman Empire, with free admission. Today the ruins of the structure is one of the landmarks of the city and at the same time a testimony to the high level of Roman architecture in ancient times.

The first stone amphitheater in Rome was the amphitheater of Statilius Taurus, inaugurated in 29 BC. Until it was destroyed by the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, it stood on the Field of Mars and may not have differed significantly from amphitheaters outside Rome. After the fire, Emperor Nero not only built a wooden replacement on the same site, but also began a new palace complex, the Domus Aurea, on the southern slope of the Esquiline hill. The gardens of the Domus Aurea also included the later site of the Colosseum in the valley depression between the Oppius (part of the Esquiline) and Palatine hills.
Around 72, a few years after Nero's fall, his successor Vespasian, who had won power in a bloody civil war, demonstratively returned the area to the Roman public. Within a few years he had a new stone amphitheater built there, which was to surpass not only Nero's previous building on the Field of Mars, but all previous arenas, in order to increase the fame of the new ruling dynasty of the Flavians. According to a reconstruction of the Colosseum's building inscription, its construction was financed in particular from the spoils of the Jewish War, including the Jerusalem temple treasury looted in 70. The Colosseum's construction was financed in part by the loot of the Jewish War.
The building, originally intended to be three stories high, was nearly completed by the time of Vespasian's death in 79. It consisted of three rows of arcades, one above the other, each with 80 arches. The arcades were divided by semi-columns: those at ground level in Doric order, those of the second floor in Ionic order, and those of the third floor in Corinthian order. Supposedly at the request of Vespasian's son and successor Titus, a fourth floor was added to the three round-arched floors, which was not pierced by arcades, but was solid in design and pierced only by rectangular window niches. The outer walls of the Colosseum were made in Roman travertine, but inside the cheaper bricks and tuff were used.
After its completion in 80, according to the historian Cassius Dio, the Colosseum was opened with a hundred days of games, including gladiator fights, re-enacted naval battles and animal rushes, in which 5000 animals were killed in the arena.
