Cox was born in Manhattan, New York, to Joe and Henrietta Jones Cox. He spent his childhood in Uniontown, Alabama, with his grandmother and grandfather, Lottie and Henry Jones. His mother, Mrs. Henretta Cox-Penn, and stepfather, Rudolph (Rudy) Penn, live in College Park, Georgia. By the age of 10 he became an avid drummer. He met his future wife, Otelia, during high school. They were eventually married in 1981 when Cox was 23 years old.
After graduation from high school, Cox attended the University of Alabama and originally planned to study music. Cox said in a 2003 interview with Jet magazine, "I played by ear. It was exactly like in Drumline. I played against some of the drummers from the school, and they didn't have anything on me. I just couldn't read music."
Cox is a graduate of UCLA, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Theatre. He started his radio career in 1969 at KFWB in Los Angeles, an all-news station where he was a writer, editor, reporter and anchor. In 1982, he became a reporter and early morning anchor for the Los Angeles television station KCBS-TV. In 1985, he changed stations, joining Los Angeles FOX affiliate KTTV as an anchor and later anchored for KHJ-TV (now KCAL). He also spent 10 years as a senior correspondent for Inside Edition, and has worked on FOX Sports Net’s The Last Word With Jim Rome and as a correspondent for DirecTV Sports.
In 2002, Cox became affiliated with National Public Radio, where his assignments included work as a substitute host on the Tavis Smiley Show and where he later was host of News & Notes. After News & Notes was ended in 2009, he teamed with the African American Public Radio Consortium to develop UpFront with Tony Cox, a daily news and talk show with an interview format that is aimed at African American audiences. It went on the air in October 2009 and was being broadcast in 17 U.S. radio markets as of January 2011.
Anthony (Tony) Cox (born 24 January 1954) is a Zimbabwean born guitarist and composer based in Cape Town, South Africa. A master of the Fingerpicking style of guitar playing, he has won the SAMA (South African Music Awards) for best instrumental album thrice. His music incorporates many different styles including classical, blues, rock and jazz, while keeping an African flavour.
Early life
Cox was born in a small mining town called Redcliff in Zimbabwe, what was then Rhodesia. He began playing the guitar at age nine, learning Hawaiian guitar from Archie Perreira. After Tony and his family moved to Cape Town, he began to study classical guitar at age nineteen.
