Porter Hall (September 19, 1888 – October 6, 1953) was an American character actor known for appearing in a number of films in the 1930s and 1940s. Possessing a weak chin and shifty eyes, Hall played movie villains or comedic incompetent characters.
Career
Born Clifford Porter Hall in Cincinnati, Ohio, he began his career touring as a stage actor with roles in productions of The Great Gatsby and Naked in 1926. Hall made his film debut in the 1931 drama Secrets of a Secretary. He made his last onscreen appearance in the 1954 film Return to Treasure Island, which was released after his death.
He was probably best remembered for three roles: a senator in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, an atheist in Going My Way, and the nervous, ill-tempered Granville Sawyer, who administers psychological tests to Macy's employees (including Kris Kringle), in Miracle on 34th Street.
Ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie, is a congenitaloral anomaly that may decrease mobility of the tongue tip and is caused by an unusually short, thick lingual frenulum, a membrane connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Ankyloglossia varies in degree of severity from mild cases characterized by mucous membrane bands to complete ankyloglossia whereby the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth.
Effects
Ankyloglossia can affect eating, speech, and oral hygiene as well as have mechanical/social effects. Ankyloglossia can also prevent the tongue from contacting the anterior palate. This can then promote an infantile swallow and hamper the progression to an adult-like swallow which can result in an open bite deformity. It can also result in mandibular prognathism; this happens when the tongue contacts the anterior portion of the mandible with exaggerated anterior thrusts.
Diagnosis
According to Horton et al.,diagnosis of ankyloglossia may be difficult; it is not always apparent by looking at the underside of the tongue, but is often dependent on the range of movement permitted by the genioglossus muscles. For infants, passively elevating the tongue tip with a tongue depressor may reveal the problem. For older children, making the tongue move to its maximum range will demonstrate the tongue tip restriction. In addition, palpation of genioglossus on the underside of the tongue will aid in confirming the diagnosis.
Being tongue tied, medically defined as having ankyloglossia, is a condition in which the lingual frenulum (a membrane that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth) is unusually short, causing restricted movement of the tongue.
Tongue-Tied is the tenth in a series of collections of short stories by Australian author Paul Jennings. It was released in 2002.
The stories
Tongue-Tied
A boy tries to get a rare fish for a girl in his school, believing that doing so will make her want to kiss him.
Lennie Lighthouse
A boy has teeth that glow in the dark. He has never lived with his mother. But one day, when he finds a letter mentioning where his mother might be, his friend tries to help him meet her for the first time.
Sniffex
A sequel to the Unmentionable story Ex Poser. Boffin has now invented a smell detector, which he hopes will help him find out who has been flatulating every day in class.
The Hat
A boy moves from Melbourne to the Queensland rainforest to live with his father (because his mother, who had divorced, has died). The last thing the boy has to remind him of his mother is a hat, which he always tries to retrieve every time he loses it (even if it means risking his life), but his abilities are pushed to the limit when he loses it while being ordered to stand guard over the last known individual of a species of bilby.
Here are 10 things you should know about Porter Hall, born on September 19, 1888. He was one of the more prolific character actors of the 1930s and '40s.

Mayo Clinic Minute: Tongue-tie in babies
Latching and feeding challenges can be caused by a number of issues. Rebekah Huppert, a Mayo Clinic lactation consultant, says tongue-tie sometimes could be to blame.
With tongue-tie, an unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue tethers the bottom of the tongue's tip to the floor of the mouth, restricting the tongue's range of motion.
Some cases may require a simple surgical procedure for correction. But not all babies with tongue-tie require treatment. Some families and care providers choose a wait-and-see approach. In that case, Huppert recommends working with a lactation professional who can provide some strategies.

Tongue Tie: Severity Grades 1-4 (Tongue Range of Motion Ratio)
There are several different ways of describing tongue tie. Some are purely positional whereas others are more functional. From the perspective of whether tongue tie may be causing symptoms, the functional grading system is more helpful. Known as TRMR (Tongue Range of Motion Ratio), this is calculated with two measurements: maximal inter-incisal mouth opening (MIO) and mouth opening with tongue tip to maxillary incisive papillae at roof of mouth (MOTTIP).
Grade 1: TRMR more than 80%
Grade 2: TRMR 50-80%

Tongue Tie treatment in Adulthood | Did You Know? Dr Chirag Chamria | Royal Dental Clinics
Tongue-tie is a condition present at birth that restricts the tongue’s mobility. Although most children have their tongue-ties treated in adolescence, it’s not unheard of for adults to suffer from tongue-tie without ever having a treatment in their past. Although treating tongue-tie as young as possible is preferred, it can still drastically increase the quality of life for adults who have tongue-tie.
One of the first symptoms of tongue-tie in adults is poor oral health. When your tongue has limited mobility, it becomes difficult to remove food and debris from the teeth after eating. Tongue-tie can also cause a gap between the bottom front teeth. Adults with tongue-tie may experience frequent cavities, gum inflammation, gum disease, bad breath, and other oral health problems.

I went around looking inside mouths for weeks after learning about my son's tongue! I've seen my family's tongues :)

How can you tell if your baby has a tongue-tie? Dr. Leslie Haller, General Dentist with Tongue Tie South Florida, explains tongue-tie symptoms, such as having a bubble on the baby's lip, which is a blister; difficulty lifting the tongue, and trouble sticking out the tongue, among others.
Grade 3: TRMR 50-25%
Grade 4: TRMR less than 25%

Richard Baxter, DMD, MS, used his LightScalpel CO2 laser to perform a posterior tongue-tie release (frenectomy) on a newborn baby. The Laser-ON time was 3 seconds with no bleeding. A tongue-tie release allows newborn babies the ability to latch on and breastfeed when they might not have previously been able to!
Dr. Baxter is a board-certified pediatric dentist and the owner of the Alabama Tongue-Tie Center in Pelham, AL. He recently published a new book titled “Tongue-Tied: How a Tiny String Under the Tongue Impacts Nursing, Speech, Feeding, and More” http://a.co/jhxnJXw To learn more about Dr. Baxter, visit https://tonguetieal.com
The benefits of using a LightScalpel laser for a frenectomy include less bleeding, no sutures, excellent healing, and minimal post-procedure discomfort. To learn more about the LightScalpel laser and its many benefits, visit https://www.lightscalpel.com

A tongue-tie is when the skin connecting a baby's tongue to the floor of the mouth is shorter than usual. This is relatively common in new-borns, and does require treatment in a simple procedure.
