E101: Marshall Crenshaw on Tom Wilson
In this episode (https://www.rocksbackpages.com/Podcast/Episode/e101) we invite beloved pop-rock singer-songwriter Marshall Crenshaw to reminisce about his long career, from the 40-year-old Shake single 'Something's Gonna Happen' to the documentary film he's producing about Dylan/Zappa/Velvets producer Tom Wilson. Along the way, Barney, Mark & Jasper ask Marshall about his Michigan upbringing, playing John Lennon in Beatlemania, signing to Warner Bros. Records, and his great influence Buddy Holly.
Holly pops up in a clip from the week's new audio interview, a 1990 conversation with sometime Cricket Sonny Curtis, who tells John Tobler about his friendship with Buddy, the Clash's version of his timeless 'I Fought the Law' and the mysterious 1966 death of fellow Texan singer Bobby Fuller. Ye...

Yet another Texan, the aforementioned Mr. Wilson, offers the perfect excuse to discuss Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground and the Mothers of Invention.
From there, we say goodbye to another deep Southerner, R&B legend Lloyd ('Lawdy Miss Clawdy') Price, referencing Wayne Robins' fascinating 2013 interview with the 80-year-old "Mr. Personality". Mark guides us through his favourite library additions of the week, including interviews with Carly Simon, Lamont Dozier and Mel & Kim, and Jasper concludes the episode with passing remarks on Wattstax, Björk and Charles Aznavour.
Many thanks to special guest Marshall Crenshaw; visit his website at http://marshallcrenshaw.com, and back the Kickstarter for the Tom Wilson documentary.

I listened to seven pioneering radio shows (out of twenty) which only two I have known about and one I had been hunting for in terms of years. The vinyl is SUPER rare maybe 300 LPs were pressed of each of the twenty recorded shows hosted by Tom Wilson. These LPs as I understand it were sent to other radio stations that were into the “new”, “underground”, or “progressive” sounds of late 67-69. There is a plethora of historical information found in each listening experience as well as a vast wealth of musical recording and production ideas to be found within as well.
Tom Wilson was a very esteemed producer (Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa & the Mothers, Eric Burdon & the Animals, Harumi, etc) and did some hosting for this East Coast radio show at the Music Factory (the LPs have labels of the same name) which many well known influential people were known to hang-out at; Andy Warhol, Velvet Underground, etc. This was a hub for the people in the scene and behind the scenes working with the bands. You hear a lot of seriously cool facts throughout the Music Factory radio shows from RECORDING/PRODUCING techniques to hearing test pressings, unmixed versions of songs, advertisements, 60s jive, it’s a pretty amazing historical score to hear what these radio promos are all about. They for the most part promote artists on MGM/Verve/Forecast labels those of the past, the present, and even the future. That’s right- Tom sometimes takes the listener beyond the now and straight into the future with many examples of musical works that were not even pressed or sent out to DJs until months later. There is so much info within these radio shows. I listened to seven. These producers and musicians exchange recording techniques and share sound samples. The Ultimate Spinach Episode (#14) Alan Lorber and Ian Bruce Douglas go through a sort of complex U S song all the way through before it was even released. Lorber and Douglas have this done part by part, layer by layer with Tom, so it can actually be studied by the listener. It’s just insanely amazing. I am going to have to download the rest. This historical preservation is a time capsule that is a true piece of art. The coolest thing is: NONE of the psychedelic encyclopedia’s out there mention anything beyond Bobby Callender (who has the coolest Velvet Underground radio advertisement Ever on his spot on Music Factory #20... that’s the most effective part of my vid too. It just happened to work out that way.) and the Velvet Underground. There are a number of unique surprises in each of the recordings.
Some days ago I was doing research between research for a poem that I average several hours a day working on. I searched for the elusive Bobby Callender LP on the Music Factory label. It’s been a couple of years. I freaking hit the Tom Wilson a site http://www.producertomwilson.com/the-music-factory/ run by Irwin Chusid who got the albums from an archive, cleaned them professionally, made digital copies, and put the twenty albums on a Tom Wilson website.
I am putting several music posts at www.illinoisdust.tumblr.com promoting each show with the artists, and/or producers... that I have downloaded. I have this video promoting an actual show in its entirety.
Sorry if my vid is not good. It’s sunrises from the gym I work out at, the limited travel pics hunting for vinyl the last couple months, birthday campfire from last weekend, road trippin’, and some surprises. Some footage will go into that 200+ page poem that I have been working on for almost two years, but the footage I use for that will be different. I learn as I go.
For last words- With his wit, sense of humor, and interest in so many genres Tom Wilson is well worth giving an ear to. I am convinced that even the 13 bands and their presentations I did not have interest in are certainly worth at least a listen. Tom is intertaining and on his mind-blowing game. He has surprise guests on just about every show. I learned something new or HEARD something new with every show. I cannot thank Irwin Chusid enough for his diligence in sharing a musical time capsule with the rest of the world. How awesome! The music for the most part is innocent coming from an age and consciousness long-gone no matter what the wanna-be’s and their drugs say. There is blues, jazz, psych, pop, classical and in various forms of each. It’s a real treat. Enjoy.
Happy St. Patrick's Day 2018
Peace
PS - If this is messed-up at all it is because i am exhausted from waiting through hours of trying to post this without any results.
