Tom Verlaine (born Thomas Miller, December 13, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, best known as the frontman for the New York rock band Television.
Biography
Tom Verlaine was born Thomas Miller in Denville, New Jersey, and moved to Wilmington, Delaware at age 6. He began studying piano at an early age, but switched to saxophone in middle school after hearing a record by Stan Getz. Verlaine was initially unimpressed with the role of the guitar in both rock and jazz, and was only inspired to take up the instrument after hearing the Rolling Stones' "19th Nervous Breakdown" during his adolescence, at which point he began a long period of experimentation to develop a personal style. Verlaine also had an interest in writing and poetry from an early age. As a teen he was friends with future bandmate and punk icon Richard Hell (Richard Meyers) at Sanford School, a boarding school which they both attended. They quickly discovered that they shared a passion for music and poetry.
Tom Verlaine is the Television guitarist's eponymous 1979 solo debut album.
Several tracks, including "The Grip of Love", "Breakin' In My Heart", and "Red Leaves" trace their roots to unreleased Television songs. In the case of "Red Leaves", the verses are drawn from "Adventure", the unfinished title track of Television's 1978 album, Adventure. Fred Smith, bassist for Television, also performs on the record. Ricky Wilson, late guitarist of The B-52's, plays guitar on Breakin' In My Heart. It is the only song Wilson recorded that didn't involve other B-52's members.
The album was originally mixed by Verlaine, but this mix was rejected by Elektra Records. Bob Clearmountain subsequently remixed the album, and it was this version that was released by Elektra in 1979. In 2002, a CD reissue by Collectors' Choice Music inadvertently used the earlier, rejected mix for initial pressings fulfilled by mail order; this was subsequently replaced with the approved Clearmountain mix by the time the CD was made available through traditional retail channels.

Tom Verlaine on a Brooklyn Stage - 9/26/2010. Galapogos
Dumbo Arts Festival. Tom Verlaine is the greatest guitarist in New York, yet hardly ever appears on a New York stage. Watching Verlaine perform—rarely proves less than revelatory. Tonight he appears with Television drummer Billy Ficca and the guitarist Patrick Derivaz.

(Verlaine) (Ah, shucks... I should have brought my raincoat, I knew I should have brought it) My illusions disappear At the very thought of you, Like last night's rain from the rooftops. Now it's August 24, Cool as the lining of your coat, I read the sign but do not stop. A quiet room, not long ago, Beneath the silent blue delivery, No metaphor, no memory, Above the hours always shining through. Just the sweetest... Just the sweetest... Goodness gracious, my oh my, I'm really off the hinges, Thinking of time as something tight, so tight. But you've made a garden from, A single tulip on the bed, I count my blessings all the night. A quiet room, not long ago, Beneath the silent blue delivery, No metaphor, no memory, Above the hours always shining through. Course I know that it's not wise, Gazing into sunlight, Just the things it falls upon But the final vision has Grown at least a hundred-fold, I see your disillusion gone A quiet room, not long ago, Beneath the silent room deliver me, No metaphor, no memory, Above the hours always shining through. A quiet room, not long ago, Beneath the silent room deliver me, No metaphor, no memory,
