Street children
Street children is a term for children experiencing homelessness who live on the streets of a city, town or village. Homeless youth are often called street kids and street youth; the definition of street children is contested, but many practitioners and policymakers use UNICEF’s concept of boys and girls, aged under eighteen years, for whom "the street" (including unoccupied dwellings and wasteland) has become home and/or their source of livelihood, and who are inadequately protected or supervised.
Female street children are sometimes called gamines, a term that is also used for Colombian street children of either gender.
Some street children, notably in more developed nations, are part of a subcategory called thrownaway children who are children that have been forced to leave home. Thrownaway children are more likely to come from single-parent homes. Street children are often subject to abuse, neglect, exploitation, or, in extreme cases, murder by "clean-up squads" that have been hired by local businesses or police. In Western societies, such children are sometimes treated as homeless children rather than criminals or beggars.

Tom Thumb
Tom Thumb is a character of English folklore. The History of Tom Thumb was published in 1621, and was the first fairy tale printed in English. Tom is no bigger than his father's thumb, and his adventures include being swallowed by a cow, tangling with giants, and becoming a favourite of King Arthur. The earliest allusions to Tom occur in various 16th-century works such as Reginald Scot's Discovery of Witchcraft (1584), where Tom is cited as one of the supernatural folk employed by servant maids to frighten children.
Tattershall in Lincolnshire, UK, boasts to have the home and grave of Tom Thumb.
Aside from his own tales, Tom figures in Henry Fielding's play Tom Thumb, a companion piece to his The Author's Farce. It was later expanded into a single piece titled The Tragedy of Tragedies, or the History of Tom Thumb the Great.
In the middle 18th century, books began to be published specifically for children (some with their authorship attributed to "Tommy Thumb") and, by the middle 19th century, Tom was a fixture of the nursery library. Charlotte Yonge cleansed questionable passages and the tale took on moral overtones. Dinah Mulock however refrained from scrubbing the tale of its vulgarities. Tom Thumb's story has been adapted to several films including the 1958 George Pal musical tom thumb starring Russ Tamblyn. Tiny folkloric characters like Tom are known in cultures around the world.

Tom Thumb (film)
Tom Thumb (stylised as tom thumb) is a 1958 fantasy-musical film directed by George Pal and released by MGM. The film, based on the fairy tale of the same name, is about a tiny man who manages to outwit two thieves determined to make a fortune from him.
It starred Russ Tamblyn in the title role, with a largely British supporting cast (it was filmed in both Hollywood and London), including Bernard Miles and Jessie Matthews as Tom Thumb's adoptive parents, and comic actors Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers as the villainous duo who try to exploit the tiny hero for profit.
Director Pal worked with cinematographer Georges Périnal, animators Wah Chang and Gene Warren, art director Elliot Scott and special effects artist Tom Howard to create the animated and fantasy sequences. Peggy Lee wrote the songs, and Douglas Gamley and Ken Jones wrote the music.
The film is referenced in The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962) and Pinkeltje (1978). The film is also featured in That's Dancing! (1985)

Tom Thumb is the name of two fictional characters (both with the real name Thomas Thompson) who are owned by Marvel Comics and appear in the comic books published by that company. Both are loosely based on the DC Comics superhero, the Atom.

While the Squadron is based on the Silver Age Justice League, Tom Thumb is closer to the Golden Age Atom; a very short adventurer with no superpowers. Though he is a surprisingly skilled and agile fighter for his size, his greatest similarity to the Silver Age version is that he is a brilliant scientist.
Fictional character biography
Thomas Thompson, a dwarf, was a scientist, inventor, adventurer, and member of the superhero team Squadron Supreme. He was born in Melzburg, Danteana, on Earth-712. His main contribution to the team was his scientific genius. He designed the Squadron's headquarters and frequently created advanced devices such as a Behavior Modifying Machine that could be used on criminals to change their ways, and a force field belt that protected its wearer and could even deflect bullets.

Their many vulnerabilities require specific legislation and attention from the government and other organisations to improve their condition.
There is currently no official statistic of the number of street children in India. The primary reason for this is that it is difficult to obtain accurate data about them because of their floating character. Street children usually have no proof of identification and move often. Of the 50,000 people in India that are officially reported as leaving home annually, 45 percent are under 16; this number, though, is likely very low. Various studies have formulated estimates of certain cities. In the late 1980s, for instance, it was estimated that there were at least 100,000 street children in both Kolkata and Bombay. Overall, estimates for the total number of street children in India range from 400,000-800,000.The street children in India choose to leave their families and homes for strategic reasons. Three hypotheses have been put forth in an attempt to explain their choices: urban poverty, aberrant families, and urbanization. Evidence can to some degree support all three of these hypotheses. In one study of 1,000 street children living in Bombay conducted in 1990, 39.1 percent of street children said they left home because of problems and fights with family, 20.9 percent said they left because of family poverty, and 3.6 percent said that they wanted to see the city.
Because of the low pay from employers, street children in India often choose to be self-employed or work multiple jobs. In fact, the majority of them are self-employed. One of the most common economic activities done by the children is scavenging for recyclable materials, such as plastic, paper, and metal.
Other jobs include cleaning cars; petty vending, selling small items such as balloons or sweets; selling newspapers or flowers; begging; shining shoes; working in small hotels; working on construction sites; and working in roadside stalls or repair shops.Street children, especially the older children, are also sometimes engaged in activities such as stealing, pick-pocketing, drug-peddling, and prostitution, though this is a small proportion. Most of the street children work 8--10 hours total each day in their various economic activities.

Dark nights conceal the shabbiness of Bucharest. Her shadows hide children sniffing glue from plastic bags; intoxicating themselves dulls hunger pangs and keeps them warm. Teenager Vali climbs down a man hole into an underground cave where he sleeps with six other children. Rubble and worn tyres litter the ground. After being beaten up in a children's home, Vali chose a life on the streets. Anca Dionese works for Save the Children and spends her nights visiting different groups of street children. She bribes them to give up glue sniffing with second hand clothes. By building up emotional relationships with them, she wins their trust. Near a metro station, she is upset to discover Maricica, a recent convert, sniffing glue with old friends. Maricica attends a day centre backed by the French where the children are encouraged to develop talents such as juggling. Official government policy is to return children to a stable family wherever possible. Report includes interviews with the Ministry of Education, Director of a State Orphanage and the Romanian Child Protection Committee. Profiles of the children prove distressing but it appears the government is renewing its efforts.

From winning the team battles (alongside Joel Turner) in the World Beatbox Championships in 2005, to fulfilling every artists dream and performing on Broadway in New York with the Tom Tom Crew, Tom has seen his fair share of accolades and well and truly paid his dues. As Tom's experience within the music industry expands, he plans to push the limits of the human voice as far as inhumanly possible. Enrolling the help of numerous loop stations, Tom has been conducting DJ sets using only his voice and nothing else, propelling crowds across the country into a frenzy of jaw-dropping disbelief, as he re-creates and remixes classic joints and jams from all eras and genres. At present Tom is working on an album ranging across many different generes and features and hopes to have it finished by early 2012. You might see him on a stage at a festival looping up a storm or supporting anyone from the Hilltop Hoods to Blue King Brown, or you might catch him annoying the hell out of commuters on public transport. This video was originally created to help promote a crowd funding project Jamie Macdowell and I embarked on to help fund a trip to play 25 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe that was going to be damn near impossible. But thanks to everyone sharing it and donating we have well and truly reached our goal. Thanks so much! Legends. I decided to leave the video up because I was happy with it. massive respect to Aloe Blacc.
Some info from a technical point of view:
The way I recorded this was through two separate feeds in to my soundcard. One input was a direct feed from my 3 Kaoss Pads which I have linked together and the other was from my AKG C414 mic. I filled out the Kaoss pad bed tracks using a stereo imager and added compression to the main vocal but kept that tastyyyyy room reverb in there. Once again no effects on any of my vocals except for a touch of reverb. This is all one take with a few cutaway shots thrown in there just to make it a bit more interesting and to show you how shiny my head is in close up. I'm not a tuning fork so there's a few bung notes in there and I'm shithouse at editing but hey you get the idea I gave it a blast. P.S. Give us a buck brus?

So much at ease are these children in the trash and dirt around them that they choose to play among this garbage, even as they are surrounded by a filthy pond full of sewage and worse. The puppies playing on the bill behind seem to have a better life... Such is the condition of a few, in the urban chaos of modern India. Society has just forgotten them and left them behind.
Densely populated urban hubs of developing or economically unstable regions, like India has one of the largest population of kids working as rag-pickers due to poverty and ignorance.
A street child in India is a child in India "for whom the street has become his or her habitual abode and/or source of livelihood; and who is inadequately protected, supervised, or directed by responsible adults".
It is estimated that more than 400,000 street children in India exist. Mainly because of family conflict, they come to live on the streets and take on the full responsibilities of caring for themselves, including working to provide for and protecting themselves. Though street children do sometimes band together for greater security, they are often exploited by employers and the police.
Their many vulnerabilities require specific legislation and attention from the government and other organisations to improve their condition.
There is currently no official statistic of the number of street children in India. The primary reason for this is that it is difficult to obtain accurate data about them because of their floating character. Street children usually have no proof of identification and move often. Of the 50,000 people in India that are officially reported as leaving home annually, 45 percent are under 16; this number, though, is likely very low. Various studies have formulated estimates of certain cities. In the late 1980s, for instance, it was estimated that there were at least 100,000 street children in both Kolkata and Bombay. Overall, estimates for the total number of street children in India range from 400,000-800,000.The street children in India choose to leave their families and homes for strategic reasons. Three hypotheses have been put forth in an attempt to explain their choices: urban poverty, aberrant families, and urbanization. Evidence can to some degree support all three of these hypotheses. In one study of 1,000 street children living in Bombay conducted in 1990, 39.1 percent of street children said they left home because of problems and fights with family, 20.9 percent said they left because of family poverty, and 3.6 percent said that they wanted to see the city.
Because of the low pay from employers, street children in India often choose to be self-employed or work multiple jobs. In fact, the majority of them are self-employed. One of the most common economic activities done by the children is scavenging for recyclable materials, such as plastic, paper, and metal.
Other jobs include cleaning cars; petty vending, selling small items such as balloons or sweets; selling newspapers or flowers; begging; shining shoes; working in small hotels; working on construction sites; and working in roadside stalls or repair shops.Street children, especially the older children, are also sometimes engaged in activities such as stealing, pick-pocketing, drug-peddling, and prostitution, though this is a small proportion. Most of the street children work 8--10 hours total each day in their various economic activities.

Dark nights conceal the shabbiness of Bucharest. Her shadows hide children sniffing glue from plastic bags; intoxicating themselves dulls hunger pangs and keeps them warm. Teenager Vali climbs down a man hole into an underground cave where he sleeps with six other children. Rubble and worn tyres litter the ground. After being beaten up in a children's home, Vali chose a life on the streets. Anca Dionese works for Save the Children and spends her nights visiting different groups of street children. She bribes them to give up glue sniffing with second hand clothes. By building up emotional relationships with them, she wins their trust. Near a metro station, she is upset to discover Maricica, a recent convert, sniffing glue with old friends. Maricica attends a day centre backed by the French where the children are encouraged to develop talents such as juggling. Official government policy is to return children to a stable family wherever possible. Report includes interviews with the Ministry of Education, Director of a State Orphanage and the Romanian Child Protection Committee. Profiles of the children prove distressing but it appears the government is renewing its efforts.

Street children
Street children is a term for children experiencing homelessness who live on the streets of a city, town or village. Homeless youth are often called street kids and street youth; the definition of street children is contested, but many practitioners and policymakers use UNICEF’s concept of boys and girls, aged under eighteen years, for whom "the street" (including unoccupied dwellings and wasteland) has become home and/or their source of livelihood, and who are inadequately protected or supervised.
Female street children are sometimes called gamines, a term that is also used for Colombian street children of either gender.
Some street children, notably in more developed nations, are part of a subcategory called thrownaway children who are children that have been forced to leave home. Thrownaway children are more likely to come from single-parent homes. Street children are often subject to abuse, neglect, exploitation, or, in extreme cases, murder by "clean-up squads" that have been hired by local businesses or police. In Western societies, such children are sometimes treated as homeless children rather than criminals or beggars.

These are apt quotes to describe the performance of one of Australia's most prominent and respected beatboxers and serial pests. Only in his mid-twenties Tom Thum has achieved and experienced more than most artists could hope to achieve in a lifetime. From winning the team battles (alongside Joel Turner) in the World Beatbox Championships in 2005, to fulfilling every artists dream and performing on Broadway in New York with the Tom Tom Crew, Tom has seen his fair share of accolades and well and truly paid his dues. Raised by the small but accommodating Brisbane hip hop scene, Tom started out as a graffiti writer and a Bboy but slowly rose to recognition through his ability to produce unhuman sounds and his natural knack for performing and weaselling his way on stage...
Although the stage seems the ideal habitat for Tom he is also no stranger to community and has been helping the scene improve through conducting a plethora of workshops in many places that usually wouldn't have access to such knowledge and skill. Tom has travelled from the very top of Australia teaching in the Indigenous communities of Mornington and Thursday Islands all the way to the very bottom with a series of workshops in Tasmania and Adelaide.
He has also spent considerable time teaching on Palm Island and in Charleville and many other places that would otherwise be Starved for education about proper hip hop and the positive message that music preaches.
As Tom's experience within the music industry expands, he plans to push the limits of the human voice as far as inhumanly possible. Enrolling the help of numerous loop stations, Tom has been conducting DJ sets using only his voice and nothing else, propelling crowds across the country into a frenzy of jaw-dropping disbelief, as he re-creates and remixes classic joints and jams from all eras and genres. At present Tom is working on an album ranging across many different generes and features and hopes to have it finished by early 2012. You might see him on a stage at a festival looping up a storm or supporting anyone from the Hilltop Hoods to Blue King Brown, or you might catch him annoying the hell out of commuters on public transport. Either way, you will notice him soon enough. Keep an ear out for Tom Thum."

This video was originally created to help promote a crowd funding project Jamie Macdowell and I embarked on to help fund a trip to play 25 shows at the Edinburgh Fringe that was going to be damn near impossible. But thanks to everyone sharing it and donating we have well and truly reached our goal. Thanks so much! Legends. I decided to leave the video up because I was happy with it. massive respect to Aloe Blacc.
Some info from a technical point of view:
The way I recorded this was through two separate feeds in to my soundcard. One input was a direct feed from my 3 Kaoss Pads which I have linked together and the other was from my AKG C414 mic. I filled out the Kaoss pad bed tracks using a stereo imager and added compression to the main vocal but kept that tastyyyyy room reverb in there. Once again no effects on any of my vocals except for a touch of reverb. This is all one take with a few cutaway shots thrown in there just to make it a bit more interesting and to show you how shiny my head is in close up. I'm not a tuning fork so there's a few bung notes in there and I'm shithouse at editing but hey you get the idea I gave it a blast. P.S. Give us a buck brus?
