English folklore is the folk tradition which has developed in England over a number of centuries. Some stories can be traced back to their roots, while the origin of others is uncertain or disputed. England abounds with folklore, in all forms, from such obvious manifestations as the traditional Robin Hood tales, the Brythonic-inspired Arthurian legend, to contemporary urban legends and facets of cryptozoology such as the Beast of Bodmin Moor.
English folklore is largely drawn from Celtic, Germanic and Christian sources.
Whereas some traditions were once believed across the whole of England, most belong to specific regions:
Folklore found throughout much of England
Black dog - The black dog is essentially a nocturnal apparition, often said to be associated with the Devil, and its appearance was regarded as a portent of death. It is generally supposed to be larger than a normal dog, and often has large, glowing eyes. It is a common feature of British Isles and Northern European folklore.

Jack-in-Irons | English Folklore
Welcome to my channel! Here you'll find folklore from across the British Isles! Jack-in-Irons is a phantom giant that exists in English folklore, from the county of Yorkshire. He haunts lonely roads, among many other creatures! His name may not be Jack as other Yorkshire folklore refers to "Jack-of-Green" and more so the name Jack may just be a term for calling the person an unknown male.

Tales from English Folklore #1: St Hilda and the Snakes
Whitby Abbey, on the coast of North Yorkshire, is the setting of a curious English legend. It is said that the curly ammonites that erode from the cliffs there are snakes, which were turned to stone after a local abbess prayed for God to banish them.

10 Dark English Legends
I think English folklore is among the most unique. This tends to be the case for island nations. Many English legends were born from ancient pagan beliefs. Others have emerged since, and reflect their own period of history. They were enshrined in fiction during the 19th century, but the original tales tend to be a lot more dark.

Whitby Abbey, on the coast of North Yorkshire, is the setting of a curious English legend. It is said that the curly ammonites that erode from the cliffs there are snakes, which were turned to stone after a local abbess prayed for God to banish them.

I think English folklore is among the most unique. This tends to be the case for island nations. Many English legends were born from ancient pagan beliefs. Others have emerged since, and reflect their own period of history. They were enshrined in fiction during the 19th century, but the original tales tend to be a lot more dark.
