The Battle of Leuctra (Greek: Λεῦκτρα, Leûktra) was a battle fought on July 6, 371 BC, between the Boeotians led by Thebans and the Spartans along with their allies amidst the post-Corinthian War conflict. The battle took place in the neighbourhood of Leuctra, a village in Boeotia in the territory of Thespiae. The Theban victory shattered Sparta’s immense influence over the Greek peninsula which Sparta had gained since its victory in the Peloponnesian War.
Prelude
In 371 BC the newly established democracy of Thebes had elected 4 Boeotarchs, the traditional title of the generals of the Boeotian League and so proclaimed their intention of reconstituting the aforementioned league that Sparta had disbanded. During this period Thebes had had an ally in Athens but Athens was far from happy with the treatment Plataea had received. When it came to swearing an oath to respect the treaty, Sparta swore on behalf of herself and her allies. When Epaminondas came forward asking to swear on behalf of the whole Boeotian League, the Spartans refused saying he could swear as the representative of Thebes or not at all. This Epaminondas refused. (According to Xenophon, the Thebans signed as "the Thebans", and asked the next day to change their signature to "the Boeotians", but the Spartan king, Agesilaus, would not allow it.) In this Sparta saw an opportunity to reassert their shaky authority in central Greece. Hence, they ordered the Spartan king, Cleombrotus I, to march to war from Phocis.
Time Commanders was a series of programmes made by Lion TV and PlayGen for BBC Two that ran for two series from 2003 to 2005. The programme was originally hosted by Eddie Mair and latterly by Richard Hammond, it featured a specially made game engine designed by The Creative Assembly to reenact historical battles. A team of four contestants would direct the forces on one side. The teams were unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills did not influence their success.
After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players had to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players were selected as generals, who directed the battle and had access to a strategic map. The other two players were designated lieutenants in the first series, and captains in the second. The units were indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issued commands to programme assistants, who in turn used the game interface to control the units. Troop deployment and battle followed, although in the second series there was a small skirmish conducted as a separate event to acquaint the players with the game mechanics and their units. In the second series the teams also got strategic pauses where they could refine their strategies.
Leuctra (Greek:Λεῦκτρα) was a village in ancient Greece, in Boeotia, seven miles southwest of Thebes. It is primarily known today as the site of the important 371 BC Battle of Leuctra in which the Thebans, under Epaminondas, defeated the Spartans. The Spartan hegemony was fallen after that battle, and the Thebans became a new power within the Hellenic world, until the rise of Macedon.
A modern Greek village (whose name is often transcribed "Lefktra" in accordance with modern Greek pronunciation) is now part of the municipality of Plataies.
Lefktra today
Lefktra is a traditional Greek village of Central Greece (Roumeli), located in the foothill of Kithairon (300 meters attribute). The population of Lefktra is 1,300 people nowadays. Thebes (the capital town of county Thivon) is sixteen kilometers away and Athens 70km away, from the old national road. There are bus lines from Thebes to Lefktra and vice versa daily, and from Athens to Lefktra at the weekends.
Residents' main occupations are agriculture and stockbreeding.

*Watch in HQ* Kate Silverton appeared in this episode back in 2003. Time Commanders is a series of programmes made by Lion TV for BBC Two that ran for two seasons from 2003 to 2005.
It uses an edited version of the game engine behind the real-time strategy game Rome: Total War by the Creative Assembly to recreate famous battles of the ancient world.
The battles are replayed by 4-player teams from diverse backgrounds. The teams are unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills do not influence their success. After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players have to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players are selected as generals, who will direct the battle and have access to a strategic map. The other two players are designated lieutenants, the units are indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issue commands to program assistants, who in turn use the game interface to control the units.

This animation covers the Battle of Leuctra, July [?], 371 BC.
Red = Thebans & allies
Blue = Spartans & allies
Animated and narrated by Jonathan Webb.
The date is 371BC, the place is Leuctra on the Boeotian plain in central Greece. The army of Thebes has assembled to challenge the mighty power of the city state of Sparta. There locked in a bitter struggle for control of the region..
On July 6, 371 BC, the Spartans attempted to assert their dominance after signing a peace that gave up a lot of their territories to Persia and Greek city-states attempted to form a league of their own. The Theban leader, Epaminondas, altered the traditional Greek infantry tactics and defeated the militaristic Spartans and ended the Spartan hegemony. This would also set up the Macedonian takeover of Greece.
