Biography
Early years
Rose was born in Washington, D.C., and raised by his mother Mary, who worked for the Army Corps of Engineers, his aunt, and his grandmother in an area known as South Fairlington Historic District, in Arlington, Virginia, where he was to meet Scott McKenzie, who lived nearby. Rose learned to play the banjo and guitar, and won the top music award in high school. Rose graduated from Gonzaga College Prep School, a noted Jesuit institution in DC, class of 1958. From there he joined the United States Air Force (in the Strategic Air Command), in the pre-Vietnam era, and was stationed in Kansas. He later worked as a merchant seaman on the S.S. Atlantic and in a bank, before becoming involved in the music industry.
Rose served as the head coach at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio from 1983 to 1989. He led the 1986 Miami squad to the Mid-American Conference championship and a berth in the California Bowl. That season, Rose orchestrated perhaps the biggest win in the program's history with a 21–12 victory over #8 ranked LSU in Baton Rouge. Even with his success in 1986, Rose only had two winning seasons in seven years at Miami and finished his tenure there with a record of 31–44–3 that included a streak of 20 games without a victory between 1987 and 1989. After the 1989 season, Rose's contract was not renewed and he was replaced by Randy Walker. Rose was the first coach since Edwin Sweetland in 1911 to leave Miami with a losing record.
"I don't think people who are incarcerated should be at the mercy of a detention center. They should be able to express their feelings openly without worrying the government is listening."
"Any time you lose two guys like that, when a position goes from a strength to a question mark, you have concerns. But a concern doesn't necessarily translate into a weakness."
"You can tell really fast if a linebacker has the intuitive quality needed to play inside. Steven definitely has the ability to go find the ball."

I hope she doesn't see me now I hope she never does find out I've been crying 'cause I got the blues. I used to think that I was strong And now I'm seeing I was wrong I never knew there was so much to lose! There's a part of me inside I always thought that I could hide How she found it--I never knew. One things certain--she's the first I don't remember feeling worse I never knew I had so much to lose ! Chorus: Was I surprised to have this feeling She had me reeling all around-- I never thought she'd take to stealing Or start dealing what she'd found! Maybe, someday I'll forget her Maybe, I'll find sunny weather You know the feeling when you got the blues. She did one thing good for me Something that she'll never see
