European settlement in the region began in the late 17th century with a French fur trading outpost on the banks of the Kaministiquia River. It grew into an important transportation hub with its port forming an important link in the shipping of grain and other products from western Canada, through the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the east coast. Forestry and manufacturing played important roles in the city's economy. They have declined in recent years, but have been replaced by a "knowledge economy" based on medical research and education. Thunder Bay is the site of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.
Following World War II, ex-Navy engineer Steve Martin (James Stewart) and his friend Johnny Gambi (Dan Duryea) come to Louisiana with dreams of wealth. They build an offshore oil drilling platform with the help of a large company, and find themselves in a lucrative business. However, local shrimp fishermen are hostile, feeling their livelihood is at risk. A further complication is the budding romance between Steve and the daughter of one of the shrimpers.
Production Dates: late September to mid-November 1952
Filmed in 1.37 to 1 aspect ratio
Released in 1.85 to 1 widescreen aspect ratio
The film marked Universal's first use of stereophonic sound, which at the time was presentable only in select theaters. Some contemporary reviewers complained that the sound, with its use of three speakers, was loud and distracting.
Thunder Bay is a large bay on the north shore of Lake Superior, in Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. The bay is about 50 kilometres (31mi) long and 22 kilometres (14mi) wide. It is bordered to the east by the Sibley Peninsula at the southern tip of which is Thunder Cape, marking the entrance to the bay for ships approaching from the east. The peninsula when viewed from the north shore of the lake has the appearance of a Sleeping Giant.
The harbour at the City of Thunder Bay is Canada's westernmost port on the Great Lakes, and the end of Great Lakes navigation.
The Ojibwa called it Animikie, meaning "thunder". French explorers called it Baie du Tonnerre which was translated to Thunder Bay in English. In 1871, the bay gave its name to the newly created Thunder Bay District, and in 1970, the amalgamated city of Port Arthur and Fort William also adopted the name Thunder Bay.
The Thunder Bay Police Service is the police force for the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada and also contracts to police the contiguous municipality of Oliver Paipoonge. The police force has a service area of 679km2 (262sqmi) with a population of 114,897. The force has 222 sworn officers, 198 per 100,000 people, which is 6 more than the provincial average of 192. The Chief of Police is John Paul (JP) Levesque.
The force is established and operates under the authority of the Police Services Act of Ontario. The Act requires the police force to be governed by a five member civilian "Police Services Board". The mayor has the option to sit on the board by virtue of office. At least two members must be members of council. A third member is appointed by council from the community and the remaining two members are appointed by the Province of Ontario. The current board chair is municipal councillor Joe Virdiramo. The remaining members are mayor Keith Hobbs, community member Jackie Dojack, and provincial appointees Allan Laakkonen and Debra Johnsen. City of Thunder Bay Clerk John Hannam acts as the Board Secretary.
A police force is a constituted body of persons empowered by the state to enforce the law, protect property, and limit civil disorder. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. The term is most commonly associated with police services of a sovereign state that are authorized to exercise the police power of that state within a defined legal or territorial area of responsibility. Police forces are often defined as being separate from military or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors; however, gendarmerie are military units charged with civil policing.
Law enforcement, however, constitutes only part of policing activity. Policing has included an array of activities in different situations, but the predominant ones are concerned with the preservation of order. In some societies, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, these developed within the context of maintaining the class system and the protection of private property. Many police forces suffer from police corruption to a greater or lesser degree. The police force is usually a public sector service, meaning they are paid through taxes.
The police service dates to the 13th century when the first sheriffs were appointed. As the first city in Norway to do so, Trondheim had a chief of police appointed in 1686, and Oslo established a uniformed police corps in 1859. The directorate is led by National Police Commissioner Odd Reidar Humlegård. Police districts were introduced in 1894, with the current structure dating from 2003.

I never thought that anyone could do me like you do me I never thought that love would get in the way But there was magic in the air and there were stars out on the water On a moonlit night in Thunder Bay Was it the lightning on the water? Was it the thunder from the bay? When the night goes down, they are hard to tell apart Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark The eyes of disillusion keep burning holes right through me Down in Watertown, you'll see it all A willing hand, a second glance at evil in a red dress I threw in my hand and bet it all Was it the lightning on the water? Was it the thunder from the bay? When the night goes down, they are hard to tell apart Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark I could've walked away I should've been afraid I never would've strayed But I did, yes, I did, in Thunder Bay Was it the lightning on the water? Was it the thunder from the bay? When the night goes down, they are hard to tell apart Just like howling at the moon and barking at the dark
