Thomas Wilson Dorr (November 5, 1805 – December 27, 1854), was American politician and reformer, best known for leading the Dorr Rebellion.
He was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of Sullivan and Lydia (Allen) Dorr. His father was a prosperous manufacturer and co-owner of Bernon Mill Village. Dorr's family occupied a good social position. Thomas Dorr never married, but two of his sisters wed prominent men and the son of one of them married a daughter of John Lothrop Motley. Dorr was no plebeian when he led the cause of the unenfranchised classes. As a boy, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy. He graduated from Harvard College in 1823, and then went to New York City, where he studied law under ChancellorJames Kent and Vice-Chancellor William McCoun. He was admitted to the bar in 1827 and returned to Providence to practice. He began his political career as a representative in the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1834.
Thomas Wilson (1563–1622) was an English Anglican priest, known as the compiler of an early biblical reference work.
Life
Born in County Durham, Wilson matriculated at The Queen's College, Oxford on 17 November 1581, aged 18. He graduated B.A. on 7 February 1584, and was licensed M.A. on 7 July 1586. He was elected chaplain of the college, apparently before he was ordained, on 24 April 1585.
In July 1586 Wilson was appointed rector of St. George the Martyr, Canterbury through the influence of Henry Robinson, to whom he had owed his college education. He remained at Canterbury for the rest of his life, preaching three or four sermons every week, and popular with Puritans, but complained of by others to Archbishop George Abbot for nonconformity. He was acting as chaplain to Thomas Wotton in 1611.
Wilson died at Canterbury in January 1622, and was buried in his own churchyard, outside the chancel, on the 25th. A funeral sermon was preached by William Swift of St. Andrew's, Canterbury. He was married and left a large family.
Wilson, was born on 14 November 1773 at Low Fell, now a suburb of Gateshead into a very poor family. Like many from the North East, he began his working life down the mines at one of the many local pits, starting as a trapper-boy at around the age of around 8 or 9 years old. He had the determination to better himself, and wanted to improve his life and so studied, educating himself to a high standard, before moving on to become a schoolmaster at an early age.
Later life
After a short stay in this job, he moved to a clerkship on Newcastle's Quayside.
In 1803, Wilson followed this with a move to join a Tyneside engineering company run by Mr John Losh. He became a partner in the company in 1807 and the partnership changed its name to Losh, Wilson and Bell, manufacturer of alkali and iron.

Rhode Island historians love to tell the story of the Dorr Rebellion, so I will keep it short ...ThomasWilson Dorr, a lawyer and politician, wanted to expand voting rights ... Big, culture-changing issues led Dorr to foment his rebellion ... SUBSCRIBE ... ....
... of its principal draftsman, the great Rhode Island reformer ThomasWilson Dorr, by eliminating the roadblocks to constitutional reform that had plagued Rhode Island politics for over 13 decades.
In an extralegal plebiscite in late 1841, frustrated Rhode Islanders overwhelmingly approved a constitution that emerged from an extralegal convention led by Providence attorney ThomasWilson Dorr.
After ThomasWilson Dorr, the leader of the rebellion, fled the state in June 1842, the president of Brown University remarked that Dorr’s attempt at reform nearly led to “the horrors of civil war.”.
