Savage was appointed Rector of Davenham, Cheshire, 1470; Rector of Jacobstow, Devon, 1474; Rector of Monks Risborough, Buckinghamshire, 1484 and Rector of Rosthorne, Cheshire. In 1490 he took part as a representative of England in the unsuccessful conference at Boulogne. On 3 December 1492, Thomas Savage was nominated Bishop of Rochester. He was consecrated on 28 April 1493 and held the post until 1496 when he was translated to be Bishop of London. He was translated from the see of London on 18 January 1501 to be Archbishop of York, a post he held until death. While Archbishop he handled the marriage ceremony of Arthur, Prince of Wales to Catherine of Aragon. Prince Arthur died young, and his brother Henry, who became Henry VIII, then married Catherine.
He went to Massachusetts with Sir Harry Vane aboard the Planter in 1635. He was admitted a freeman of Boston in 1636. The next year he took the side of his mother-in-law, Anne Hutchinson, in the controversy that her teaching excited. He was compelled in consequence to leave the colony, and with William Coddington he and many others founded the settlement of Rhode Island in 1638. Savage was a signer of the Portsmouth Compact. After living there for some time he was permitted to return to Boston.
Military Career
He became a member of the Military Company of Massachusetts in 1637. In 1639 he was elected as the company's second sergeant and in 1640 he became its first sergeant. In 1641 he was elected for a one year term as lieutenant of the Military Company of Massachusetts.
Thomas Savage (April 25, 1915 – July 25, 2003) was an American author of 13 novels published between 1944 and 1988. He is best known for his Western novels, which drew on early experiences in the American West.
Background
Savage was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1915 to Elizabeth (Yearian) and Benjamin Savage. His parents divorced when he was two years old and, when his mother remarried three years later, he moved with her to a ranch in Beaverhead County, Montana. After graduating from Beaverhead County High School, he studied writing at Montana State College (today the University of Montana), transferring to Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where he courted Montana native Elizabeth Fitzgerald (later to become the novelist Elizabeth Savage), whom he had met in Missoula. They married in 1939 and received B.A. degrees in 1940.
By the time he was twenty-nine, Savage had worked as a wrangler, ranch hand, welder, and railroad brakeman. Following the publication of his first novel (The Pass) and the birth of his first two children, Robert and Russell, Savage secured a teaching position at Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he taught from 1947–1948. His daughter Elizabeth was born in 1949, the same year he left Suffolk for an assistant professorship at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. By 1955, Savage was able to stop teaching and focus on his writing full-time.
