Thomas HughesQC (20 October 1822–22 March 1896) was an English lawyer, judge and author. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days (1857), a semi-autobiographical work set at Rugby School, which Hughes had attended. It had a lesser-known sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford (1861).
Hughes had numerous other interests, in particular as a Member of Parliament, in the British co-operative movement, and in a settlement in Tennessee reflecting his values.
Early life
Hughes was the second son of John Hughes, editor of the Boscobel Tracts (1830). Thomas Hughes was born in Uffington, Berkshire (now Oxfordshire). He had six brothers, and one sister, Jane Senior who later became Britain's first female civil servant. At the age of eight he was sent to Twyford School, a preparatory public school near Winchester, where he remained until the age of eleven. In February 1834 he went to Rugby School, which was then under the celebrated Thomas Arnold, a contemporary of his father at Oriel College, Oxford.
Thomas Bridges Hughes (17 September 1851 – 10 August 1940) was an English amateur footballer who was the first player to score two goals in an FA Cup Final, with Wanderers in 1876. He subsequently had a long career as a schoolteacher.
Education
Hughes attended Winchester College between 1863 and 1870, where he excelled academically, becoming a school prefect and in 1869-70 he was "Prefect of Hall", effectively the head boy. He was also a keen cricketer and represented the school from 1868 to 1870. He attained a scholarship to New College, Oxford, although this took him three years to achieve.
After graduating, in 1876 he initially studied law at the Inner Temple, before embarking on his career as a teacher.
Thomas Eyre Forrest "Tom" HughesAOQC (born 26 November 1923) is a former Australian politician and a prominent barrister practising at Blackstone Chambers in Sydney, who served as the 19th Attorney-General of Australia from 1969 to 1971. He was a Liberal member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1963 to 1972, representing first the seat of Parkes and then (when Parkes was abolished in 1969) the seat of Berowra.
Thomas John Hughes (9 September 1892 – 6 November 1980), sometimes known as Diver Hughes, was an Australian politician, and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly representing the seat of East Perth for two periods; from 1922 until 1927, and again from 1936 until 1943.
Biography
Hughes was born in South Melbourne, Victoria, to Felix Hughes, a labourer, and his wife Maria (née Boudan). In 1896, the family moved to Western Australia, and he was educated at state schools. He obtained work in the Postmaster General's Office as a telegraph boy, before entering the commonwealth public service as an audit inspector. In his spare time, he rowed for Western Australia in 1914 and 1920.
During this time he joined the Labor Party, and was both president of the Metropolitan Council and a member of the state executive. He was selected to run for the party at a by-election on 18 November 1922 in East Perth, following the resignation of J. J. Simons, and won the seat. Shortly after his election on 20 December 1922, he married Lucy Olive Stone in Inglewood. In 1926, he resigned from the Labor Party and sat from then as an Independent Labor member; however he failed to retain the seat at the 1927 election, losing to railwayman and unionist James Kenneally.
Thomas HughesVC (10 Nov 1885 – 4 January 1942) was a British Army soldier, and Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 3 September 1916 at Guillemont, France, Private Hughes was wounded in an attack but returned at once to the firing line after having his wounds dressed. Later, seeing a hostile machine-gun, he dashed out in front of his company, shot the gunner and, single-handed, captured the gun. Though again wounded, he brought back three or four prisoners.
He later achieved the rank of corporal. He died in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, 8 January 1942, aged 56. He is buried in the cemetery attached to St Patrick's Roman Catholic church in Broomfield, near Castleblayney, in Co Monaghan.
