Forrest Gump - Trailer
Stupid is as stupid does, says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. A Megalithic Mystery: The Dragon Houses of Ancient Greece | Ancient Architects
Earlier this week I saw a fascinating article on the Arkeonews website, about something I knew very little about, that being the mysterious megalithic structures in the mountains of the island of Euboea, the largest island in Greece after Crete: https://arkeonews.net/unsolvable-megalithic-mystery-of-ancient-greek-dragon-houses/
These megalithic marvels are known as Dragon Houses and there are 23 of them on the island, mostly in the regions of Mount Oche and Styra in Euboea.
These mortar-fee constructions are thought to date back to the Preclassical period of Ancient Greece, the classical period beginning around 490 BC. They have stood, pretty much intact, for more than two millennia but their origins and purpose are a true ancient megalithic mystery.
There is a brilliant article on novo...

Matthias Schwartz on Russian Sci-Fi Cities before 1917
Skip the intro: 05:16
This lecture is part of Search for a new New World. The more frustrated you are on earth, the more you hope for in space. Moving beyond the terrestrial focus of the exhibition Building a new New World, four case studies from before the revolution to the space race look to Russian sci fi to probe individual hopes and ideas about new societal organization. Inherently experimental, sci-fi stories and films could reflect on what was and wasn’t possible in Russian reality and think beyond it.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Believing they wrecked his car, Jefferson (Forest Whitaker) takes his anger out on the Lincoln football team.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Amy Heckerling's adaptation of Cameron Crowe's Fast Times at Ridgemont High is often considered one of the finest films of a disreputable genre (the teen sex comedy), and kick-started the careers of many future stars. The center of this ensemble film is Jennifer Jason Leigh as Stacy Hamilton. She is a young, innocent high-school student who, as the film opens, is asking for advice from her friend, the sexually outspoken Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates). Stacy takes a liking to nebbish Mark Ratner (Brian Backer), but he is too afraid to make a move even after Stacy all but throws herself at him. She eventually hooks up with Mark's more confident best friend, Mike Damone (Robert Romanus). When not concerning itself with these four characters, the film spends time with stoned surfer dude Jeff Spicoli (Sean Penn) and his ongoing feud with history teacher Mr. Hand (Ray Walston). The film includes brief appearances by such future stars as Nicolas Cage, Eric Stoltz, and Forest Whitaker.
CREDITS:

Cast: Stanley Davis Jr., Sean Penn, Forest Whitaker
Director: Amy Heckerling

About the Event
In twenty-first century conflicts, the increased density of the legal terrain has become a source of anxiety for soldiers, and commanders. Civilian leaders too have to deal with such complexity as they implement military plans within the boundaries of a multi-layered legal framework (international law, human rights law, law of armed conflict, law of the host nation, domestic law, military disciplinary conducts). Concurrently, the functions performed by modern armed forces also include a wide array of activities from conducting hostilities, maintaining order to the transport of humanitarian aid, clearing mines, fighting crime and helping the reconstruction of State structures in the post bellum phase.
In this seminal work, Professor Michael Newton provides an irreplaceable tool for any politician, international expert, or military practitioner who wishes to understand the approach taken by the American military in the complex range of modern conflicts. This book intends to provide an in depth analysis of the US approach to the most pressing problems in modern wars including controversies surrounding use of human shields, fighting in urban areas, the use of cyberwar and modern weaponry, expanding understanding of human rights, and the rise of ISIS. It also contributes to a better understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of US legal and policy and the reasons behind the modern American way of war.
About Michael Newton
Michael A. Newton is Professor of the Practice of Law and Professor of the Practice of Political Science at Vanderbilt University Law School, Nashville, Tennessee and the Editor of the US Department of Defense Law of War Manual. He is an authority in the law of armed conflict research field, expert on terrorism, accountability, transnational justice, and conduct of hostilities issues. He has published over ninety articles, editorials, and book chapters including co-authored books Proportionality in International Law (2014), and Enemy of the State: The Trial and Execution of Saddam Hussein (2008), which received the Book of the Year Award from the International Association of Penal Law. Newton helped negotiate the International Criminal Court Elements of Crimes and served in the US Department of State during the Clinton and Bush Administrations.
Professor Newton served in the U.S. Army more than 21 years, beginning with his commission from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in May 1984 as an armor officer in the 4th Battalion, 68th Armor at Fort Carson, Colorado. He attended the University of Virginia School of Law and served as the Chief Operational Law with the US Army Special Forces Command (Airborne) supporting Desert Storm and deployed on Operation Provide Comfort to assist Kurdish civilians in Northern Iraq. He was the Judge Advocate for the 7th Special Forces Group and led the human rights and rules of engagement education for all Multinational Forces and International Police deploying into Haiti.

Stupid is as stupid does, says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother, Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam, Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp, and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people.

Festival programme: www.alumni.cam.ac.uk/festival
Through interviews with over 100 people who knew Burgess personally and the discovery of hitherto secret files on the Cambridge Spies, Andrew Lownie, a former President of the Cambridge Union, reveals a completely new and intriguing picture of Guy Burgess, the most important, complex and fascinating of 'The Cambridge Spies'
Drawing on research in archives around the world and files released under Freedom of Information requests, Andrew Lownie recounts the full story of the treachery of the Cambridge Spy. He reveals how he was recruited at Cambridge as a damage limitation exercise but was soon regarded as the most important of the network by the Russians penetrating the BBC, the Foreign Office and both MI5 and MI6. He also provides new information on Burgess's flight to Russia and his work for the Russians there. With a cast of characters ranging from Winston Churchill and Kim Philby to EM Forster and George Orwell, this promises to be an enthralling talk.
Dr Andrew Lownie
Andrew Lownie was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was Dunster History Prizeman and President of the Union, before taking his Masters and doctorate at Edinburgh University. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he later returned to Cambridge as a visiting fellow at Churchill College. He has been a bookseller, publisher, journalist, writing for the Times, Telegraph, Wall Street Journal, Spectator and Guardian, and since 1988 has run his own literary agency specialising in history and biography. He is President of the Biographers Club, sits on the board of Biographers International Organisation and is a Trustee of the Campaign for Freedom of Information.

There is a brilliant article on novoscriptorium.com website (linked below), which gives us plenty of information and in this video, I present an overview and hopefully give us all something new to think about.
