Ur-Nammu and the Foundation of the Neo-Sumerian Empire
In this video we explore what happened in the ancient Near East, specifically Mesopotamia, after the fall of the Akkadian Empire. For a brief period there was darkness; then, a sort of enlightenment period that was brought on by the advent of the Neo-Sumerian Empire, ruled by the Third Dynasty of Ur. The man largest responsible for this renaissance? Ur-Nammu.
Take a look at the beginnings of one of the most important, yet not so well-known, empires of the ancient world.

Amorite Kingdoms and the Sumerian Renaissance - Ancient Mesopotamia DOCUMENTARY
In the previous episode of our historical animated documentary series on the history of Ancient Mesopotamia we discussed the rise and fall of the first empire in history - The Akkadian Empire. Its great rulers from Sargon to Naram-Sin broke the mold and set in motion a way of running a state which would be emulated for thousands of years to come. From this point forward the Empire would be the prominent form of government, however before another could rise in the region a dark age had to be overcome. After the fall of Akkad, the Gutians had established their own dynasty and hegemony in the Euphrates river valley which would set the stage of what was to come. Welcome to our video on the brief ‘Sumerian renaissance’ and the eventual rise of Babylon.

History Summarized: the Great Ziggurat of Ur
In the river valley where urban society first arose several thousand years ago, my attention naturally focuses in on the moment they started building ginormous stuff. In this video we will learn two things: 1) The great Ziggurat of Ur is one of human civilization's earliest urban masterpieces, and 2) I'm impeccably basic.
I am reveling in my architecture era.
Special thanks to our discord community member and Levantine Archaeology extraordinaire Jacob Khan for his assistance on the script, helping me find a few key details I missed and setting me straight where my draft had some mis-characterizations and errors. Any remaining error in the video are mine. Again, thank you Jacob!

This episode continues our study of the Neo-Sumerian Empire with one of its most famous kings, Shulgi of Ur. Shulgi is not only one of the longest reigning kings of the ancient world, but also one of the most prolific in terms of his achievements. What began as the "Sumerian Renaissance" with Ur-Nammu continued and you could say, was perfected under Shulgi. He brought Sumerian culture and influence to its height not only in Sumer, but across the ancient Near East. However, all good things must come to an end, Shulgi's Neo-Sumerian Empire being no different. His sons and successors were not able to hold onto all he'd created with his last descendant, Ibbi-Sin, having to pay the ultimate price.

In the dusts of Iraq, the ruins of the world's first civilization lie buried.
This episode, we travel into the extremely distant past to look at the Sumerians. These ancient people invented writing and mathematics, and built some of the largest cities that the world had ever seen. Find out about the mystery of their origins, and learn how they rose from humble beginnings to form the foundation of all our modern societies. With myths, proverbs and even some recreated Sumerian music, travel back to where it all began, and find out how humanity's first civilization fell.
