A thermal power station is a power plant in which heat energy is converted to electric power. In most of the world the prime mover is steam driven. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives an electrical generator. After it passes through the turbine, the steam is condensed in a condenser and recycled to where it was heated; this is known as a Rankine cycle. The greatest variation in the design of thermal power stations is due to the different heat sources, fossil fuel dominates here, although nuclear heat energy and solar heat energy are also used. Some prefer to use the term energy center because such facilities convert forms of heatenergy into electrical energy. Certain thermal power plants also are designed to produce heat energy for industrial purposes of district heating, or desalination of water, in addition to generating electrical power. Globally, fossil-fuel power stations produce a large part of man-made CO2 emissions to the atmosphere, and efforts to reduce these are varied and widespread.
The world's first power station was designed and built by Lord Armstrong at Cragside, England in 1868. Water from one of the lakes was used to power Siemensdynamos. The electricity supplied power to lights, heating, produced hot water, ran an elevator as well as labor-saving devices and farm buildings.
Power Station (traditional Chinese:動力火車; simplified Chinese:动力火车; pinyin:Dònglì Huǒchē) is a Taiwanese rock duo, composed of Yu Chiu-hsin and Yen Chih-lin, both of the Paiwan tribe of Taiwan's Pingtung County. Their music is characterized by their fast-paced rock ballads, as well as their electrifying rock anthems. Their looks and long hair stand out from the mainstream Chinese pop scene because of their resemblance to typical western Heavy Metal musicians. In 2001, Power Station released their first album on the Grand Music label (later known as HIM International Music), Walking along Jhonghsiao East Street Nine Times. The title track of that album (Chinese version of song from 1997 "Takie tango" by Budka Suflera) won the Silver Award for Best Mandarin Song at the 24th RTHK Top Ten Golden Song Awards.
Biography
Yu Chiu-hsin and Yen Chih-lin graduated from Taiwan Adventist College in Nantou County, and formed a band called "Virgin Choir" (處男合唱團) with some friends before changing to "Prominent Position" (突出部位) and disbanding. At the ages of 25, they formed Power Station through singing western rock songs. After the release of their first album, their fames spread within the Chinese music scene in the 1990s. In 1998, they sang the theme song "When" (當) from the drama My Fair Princess.

How It Works: Thermal Power Stations
Coal, oil and gas can be used as primary sources of energy, as well as transformed into electrical energy, which is a secondary source of energy.
This transformation happens in thermal power stations.
Process:
• Fuel such as biomass, coal, oil and gas are fed into a boiler.
• The boiler heats the fuel in extremely high temperatures.
• The heat energy produced from burning these fuels is used to heat the water found in the squiggly pipe.
• This water reaches boiling point and turns to steam, where it rises and travels through to the steam turbine.
• The turbine spins due to the pressure of the steam turning fan-like blades. The steam must flow into the turbine at a high pressure to be able to turn the blades.
• As the turbine starts to spin, the heat energy from the steam transforms to k...

▶️Introduction
A coal fired power station burns coal in order to generate heat which is used to generate steam. The steam is then used to rotate a steam turbine runner which is connected to a generator. The generator generates alternating current which is delivered to a transformer and finally into the grid.
The study of how electrical energy is generated is termed Power Engineering; the related industry is the Power Generation industry.
Coal fired power plants rely upon many components in order to function, the main components are:
Water Tube Boiler
Steam Turbine
Generator
Transformer – you can see our video tutorial here:
https://youtu.be/3osmO4FQ2Yg
Cooling Tower (larger plants use natural draft cooling towers, you can see our video tutorial for this here:

Coal Pulveriser – you can see our video tutorial here:
https://youtu.be/UqOkLiO_8Yo
The water tube boiler furnace converts the coal’s chemical energy to heat (thermal energy). The water tube boiler tubes convert water to steam. A fire tube boiler is used as a standby boiler for most thermal power plants, but it does not have the steam generation capacity of a water tube boiler.
Below is a link to our fire tube boiler tutorial:
https://youtu.be/CBlOJoXUyIk
The steam turbine converts the energy from the steam (enthalpy) into mechanical motion (steam flowing through the turbine causes it to rotate).
The steam turbine is connected on a shaft to a generator via a gearbox. As the steam turbine runner rotates, so too does the generator rotor.
The generator converts the mechanical motion from the turbine into electrical energy, which is then dispatched to a transformer and finally the electrical grid.
Cooling towers cool the steam discharged form the low pressure turbine(s) and cause it to condense back into condensate (liquid). The condensate is then pumped back to the boiler, usually via a deaerator and other pre-heaters.

In addition to the above main components, a typical coal fired power station will have fans and pumps etc. Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are used as part of the flue gas (exhaust gas) cleaning system, as are flue gas desulpherisers (flue gas desulphurisation process, or 'FGD').

• As the turbine starts to spin, the heat energy from the steam transforms to kinetic energy as the turbines spin.
• This kinetic energy turns the generator, which generates electricity.
• The steam is cooled in the condenser, turning back to water, where it’s sprayed into the cooling tower and recycled for use in the boiler pipe once again.

Cooling Tower (larger plants use natural draft cooling towers, you can see our video tutorial for this here:

THERMAL POWER PLANT
Electricity can also be produced at thermo-electric fuel-burning generating stations that burn fossil fuels.Large amount of fossil fuels are burnt every day in power stations to heat up water to produce steam which further runs the turbine to generate electricity. The transmission of electricity is more efficient than transporting coal or petroleum over the same distance. Therefore, many thermal power plants are set up near coal or oil fields. The term thermal power plant is used since fuel is burnt to produce heat energy which is converted into electrical energy.
The Tuoketuo Power Generation Project in Inner Mongolia, China, is the world's largest thermal power plant - a significant project for China's 'Western Development' and 'West-to-East Power Transmission.' The plant was established in November 1995 and took 22 years to complete. Equipped with 12 units, it produces a total of 6.72 million kilowatts, making it the largest thermal power plant globally. The facility has environmental features, including advanced desulfurization, denitrification, dust removal technology, and an ultra-low emission transition. It aims to focus on green transformation, setting a new benchmark for the coal-fired power generation industry by integrating wind power, photovoltaic and heating. This transformation contributes to China's aim to achieve 'carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.'
An iconic thermal #powerplant in central China’s Zhengzhou city was demolished on Tuesday for environmental reasons. It dates back to 1953 and the historic site will be transformed into a green complex.
