Sturgeon was born Edward Hamilton Waldo in Staten Island, New York in 1918. His name was legally changed to Theodore Sturgeon at age eleven after his mother's divorce and remarriage to William Dicky ("Argyll") Sturgeon.
From 1987 through 1994 the award was given out by a panel of science fiction experts led by Orson Scott Card. Beginning in 1995, the committee was replaced by a group of jurors, who vote on the nominations submitted for consideration. The initial jurors were James Gunn, Frederik Pohl, and Judith Merril. Merril was replaced on the jury by former winner Kij Johnson in 1997, one of Sturgeon's children—Noel Sturgeon in most years—was added to the panel in 1999, and George Zebrowski was added to the panel in 2005. Nominations are submitted by reviewers, fans, publishers, and editors, and are collated by the current Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction, Christopher McKitterick, into a list of finalists to be voted on by the jury. The maximum eligible length that a work may be is not formally defined by the center. The winner is selected by May of each year, and is presented at the Campbell Conference awards banquet in June at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, as part of the centerpiece of the conference along with the Campbell Award. Winners are always invited to attend the ceremony. Since 2004 winners have received a personalized trophy, while since the inception of the award a permanent trophy has recorded all of the winners.
"He understood real people, not just science fiction characters," says science fiction Grand Master Robert Silverberg of legendary author Theodore Sturgeon. Regarded as one of the godfathers of contemporary science fiction and dark fantasy, Sturgeon's stories are considered classics of speculative fiction, and have been honored with the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the International Fantasy Award, among others. In this video, watch as authors Jonathan Lethem and Robert Silverberg discuss the great strides that Sturgeon made in the science fiction and fantasy genre, pushing against societal conformity and leaving behind a rich legacy of works that were light-years ahead of their time.

Minicon 15 (1979)-Theodore Sturgeon Guest of Honor Speech, with intro by Toastmaster Bob Vardeman
Minicon 15 was held April 13-15, 1979 in Minneapolis, with Guests of Honor Theodore Sturgeon, Rick Sternbach and Tom Digby.
In this brief Guest of Honor speech, Sturgeon speaks about his experience at the "Jupiter Encounter" at JPL, seeing photos of Ganymede and Callisto for the first time. This is followed by a rumination on humanity, interwoven with his shaping of "Sturgeon's Law", and an exposition on his favored "Ask the Next Question" philosophy. In this brief 16ish minute recording, you get a sense of the man himself.
A lovely (and knowledgeable) intro by Bob Vardeman sets the stage.

Dangerous Visions was an anthology of controversial works, none more controversial than If All Men Were Brothers, Would You Let One Marry Your Sister by Theodore Sturgeon.
I hope you will listen to the end and let me know whether you think it is acceptable for literature to push moral boundaries or if you think there is such a thing as going too far.

The shows are presented in the order written on Michael’s back up tapes and are believed to be in a chronological order based on available station documentation and known air dates. This is the home of the complete series in it’s highest quality from source material for broadcast. It is made public HERE by the show creator as this will always remain free. Please respect his creative vision and do not sell or appropriate for profit but instead help share the show and link to this web page so that others can also get their lossless copies of the show directly from Michael Hanson which was his wish and the sole intent of this page which was a culmination of a dream and is his personal gift to you. As these are Michael’s master digital show copies, ANYONE who claims to have a different sourced or better sounding collection of this show is LYING. This is the original and DEFINITIVE SOURCE of the MINDWEBS series by the creator of the show for anyone who wants it.
"It is my hope and intention that this project will bring free enjoyment of MINDWEBS to listeners new and old as long as sound exists. My sincere thanks to Darkman for making this possible. And my thanks to the myriad fans who've help make this entire enterprise viable."
