The Man in the Arena – Teddy Roosevelt (A Powerful Speech from History)
Read by Shane Morris
-
On April 23, 1910, a year after leaving his presidential office, Theodore Roosevelt gave what would become one of his greatest rhetorical triumphs. The most famous section of his speech still resonates and inspires, even today.

We believed that the frail, asthmatic little boy who loved to collect insects would amount to anything special, much less the youngest and most robust president in US history.

Theodore Roosevelt | Historians Who Changed History
it's time to talk about Theodore Roosevelt, who preferred his military title of Colonel, found Teddy to be a childish nickname, and was often simply went by TR. Yes, he was a historian and a prolific writer, as you can see in the bibliography below, which only has a few of his books. He certainly shaped the American history field - becoming one of the three important figures for solidifying the frontier myth as the basis for American exceptionalism. TR was a part of historiographic shift that had major ramifications. I'm somewhat ambivalent about the Colonel. He was certainly an imperialist, white supremacist, war-monger, and nationalist - but he also seemed to learn from his mistakes, unlike Wilson, whom he fervently despised. Hardcore Facts About Teddy Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, was more than the man behind the Panama Canal and the inspiration for the teddy bear. He was a cowboy. A soldier. An explorer. A badass. When Teddy Roosevelt, or T.R. as he was commonly known, was a child, he had health issues. He overcame these by living what he called a "strenuous life." That's putting it lightly.

Washington D.C. is situated on the east coast of the USA, along the banks of the Potomac River.
Most visitors begin at the National Mall. Zero Milestone is the proposed reference point for distances on all US maps. To the north is the White House. To the south stands the Washington Monument. The US Capitol Building, atop Capitol Hill, is the nation's seat of federal government.
The Mall is also home to many of the nation's Smithsonian buildings, including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.
Reflecting Pool is surrounded by tributes to its heroes and founding fathers, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial.
Washington D.C.'s Capital Bikeshare system makes it easy to reach downtown neighborhoods such as DuPont Circle and Foggy Bottom.
Georgetown is the oldest district in Washington D.C. Wisconsin Avenue and M Street have boutique stores and galleries. To the north is the National Cathedral, the Smithsonian National Zoo and the International Spy Museum.
Just across the Potomac is Arlington National Cemetery.
