Houston was born in Leland, Mississippi. She is the daughter of a cotton picking mother. She and her three sisters grew up primarily in Long Beach, California. After marrying and having two children, she joined the Art Reynolds Singers gospel group and was subsequently signed as a recording artist with Dunhill Records. She is not related to Whitney Houston.
In 1969, Houston released her debut album, entitled Sunshower, produced, arranged and composed by Jimmy Webb except for one track. In 1971 she signed with Motown Records but her early recordings with them were largely unsuccessful. Her most notable single during that period was "You've Been Doing Wrong for So Long" which peaked at #64 on the U.S.BillboardR&Bchart in 1974. However Houston's vocal prowess on that track secured her a nomination for a Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. In 1973 Motown Productions announced a projected biopic of Dinah Washington which would star Houston; however the project was dropped due to difficulties in getting clearance from Washington's relatives. In April 1974 Houston joined the cast of The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine, playing various characters during the show's skits. The show was canceled in August and for the next several years her work was limited to demo recordings and performing at small venues.
Thelma Houston (1972) is the second album by Thelma Houston, recorded in 1972 and released in 1973. The album includes the single, "Me and Bobby McGee". This is her first album recorded with Motown Records under the Mowest label. Two versions of the album were issued, a ten track version in the US and a fourteen track version in the UK and Germany. The album was reissued on CD in an expanded edition by Soulmusic Records in 2012.
"Going Nowhere" is the second single from Gabrielle. Written by Gabrielle and George McFarlane and produced by Pete Cragie, "Going Nowhere" reached #9 on the UK singles chart and #18 in Ireland. It was the second biggest hit from the album Find Your Way.
"Stand by Me" is a song by the English rock band Oasis, written by lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher. It was the second single to be released from the band's third album, Be Here Now.
The song peaked at number two in the UK charts in September 1997, being kept from the top spot by the record-breaking Elton John single "Candle in the Wind 1997", which was re-recorded and released in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, who had died three weeks before the release of "Stand by Me". Despite this, "Stand by Me" still went gold in the UK. It ended up at #44 in the end of year charts in the UK for 1997.
History
Noel Gallagher claims to have written the song whilst suffering from food poisoning when he first moved to London. His mother Peggy would phone him to check on him and repeatedly told him to ensure he was eating properly. This spurred Gallagher to cook himself a proper English Sunday dinner, which resulted in a bout of food poisoning. In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say: "It starts, 'Made a meal and threw it up on Sunday'. When I first moved to London me mam kept on ringing up and asking was I eating properly. Yes, Mam. So I tried to cook a Sunday roast and puked up for two days with food poisoning. It was back to Pot Noodles after that."
Thelma Houston 1983 is Thelma Houston's twelfth studio album and was her debut album on MCA Records. The album only generated commercial interest in the Urban music market. It includes two modest R&B chart hits, "Working Girl" and "Just Like All The Rest."
Thelma Houston is a self-titled 1994 album by Thelma Houston, her 16th studio album. The album was only released in Italy. Besides two re-recordings of Houston's hits "Don't Leave Me This Way" and "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning", it featured several English cover versions of Italian songs as well as a few originals, "The Long Road" and "More and More", the latter penned by Bunny Hull.

I wanna know where I'm going You ain't going nowhere We don't care You ain't going nowhere Why do you listen the meaning? You got nothing to say When she gave me your love Yeah, I take it away I don't care, she don't care We don't care, we don't care You can take everything And throw it away Takes so much time Takes no time at all I'm gonna walk the line We're gonna watch you fall I'm shining through today See what you want to see I wanna know where I'm going You ain't going nowhere I don't care, she don't care We don't care, we don't care You can take everything And throw it away Where's this place I'm staying You ain't staying nowhere Step inside my line What do you think I did? I'm gonna save the world We got time to play I'm gonna save the day
