The biggest convoy disaster of WW2 | Convoy PQ-17
On the 27th of June 1942 convoy PQ-17 departed Iceland for the Soviet Union. Out of 34 merchant ships, only 11 would make it to port. At first, things seemed to be going well for the convoy as they beat off multiple German air attacks with relative ease. But on the 4th of July, everything went wrong. An order arrived from Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, the First Sea Lord himself reading 'Convoy is to scatter'. Fearing an imminent attack from German surface ships like Tirpitz the escort ships fled west while the merchant ships made for the Soviet Union.
But the Tirpitz was nowhere near the convoy, in fact, it was still at its moorings in northern Norway. Instead of saving the convoy from disaster, Admiral Pound's order had doomed PQ-17 to destruction. Over the following week, two-thirds of the ...

PQ17: An Arctic Convoy Disaster | PBS America
Suffering freezing cold, massive icebergs, German U-boats and the Luftwaffe, the sailors of the Merchant and Royal Navy endured incredible hardships as they struggled to deliver vital war supplies via the Arctic to the Soviet Union.
Described by Winston Churchill as “the worst journey in the world”, it was also one of the most dangerous, as on the night of July 4, 1942 the 35-strong Anglo-American Arctic Convoy of merchant ships codenamed PQ17 met with disaster.
Accompanied by first-hand testimony, Jeremy Clarkson tells the dramatic story of the Arctic convoys of the Second World War, retracing the route of PQ17 as he discovers the cause of one of the biggest naval disasters of the 20th century.

The Most Dangerous Naval Route in the World - Convoy PQ-17
In June of 1942, Convoy PQ-17, consisting of nearly 300 aircraft, 600 tanks, over 4,000 trucks, and a general cargo of over 150,000 tons, took off from Hvalfjord, Iceland, on its way to the port of Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union.
The operation was one of the Allied efforts to help the Nazi-invaded Soviet Union, but during the treacherous journey, a series of miscommunications and rushed decisions left the convoy unprotected.
German U-boards and torpedo-carrying aircraft incessantly attacked the American war vehicles, resulting in the worst convoy disaster of World War II.

PQ 17 the Most Controversial Arctic Convoy of World War II
A young British scientist went through a 7-page classified document on a possible German weapon system, which was rejected by his seniors as fake.
The young scientist was a man who believed only in facts, so he went on to verify the scientific information provided in the document. Due to the curiosity of this young scientist, Britain was able to extract data from Germany’s greatest leak of military secrets.
The young scientist went on to make countermeasures for German weapons, which helped Britain win World War II. The young scientist was R V Jones, and the document was the famous Oslo Report.

The Worst Journey in the World: The story of the Russian Arctic Convoys of WWII
This film is a tribute to those involved in the Russian Arctic Convoys which left Loch Ewe during World War Two.
It includes interviews with Arctic Convoy veterans, one in New Zealand and a Canadian. Prince Michael of Kent, the Russian Consul General in Edinburgh, Celia Sandys, Sir Winston Churchill’s granddaughter also making interesting contributions, with archive footage from British Pathe and thanks to the BBC, a visit to Loch Ewe.
In the absence of being able to hold our 75th-anniversary event to mark the last Arctic Convoy to leave Loch Ewe in 2020, deferred many times due to Covid until May 2022 we hope this program will be a fitting tribute to those involved in what Winston Churchill called the ‘worst journey in the world’.

Another British blunder, just like Churchill’s support of Tito? At least that’s what the British will tell you, because the British decision to withdraw naval escort protection form Convoy PQ 17 can be understood in the same light as their Dieppe gambit, hamper any aid or relief to the Russians and covertly aid Germany. It was the biggest loss to a single British convoy in the Second World War.
In this video, IWM's Rob Rumble joins us from HMS Belfast in an attempt to uncover what went wrong. Why did Admiral Pound give the order to scatter? What was it like for the sailors and U-Boat crews? And how did the disaster of convoy PQ-17 affect the outcome of the Second World War?

PQ 17 was the code name for an Arctic convoy that departed from Hvalfjord, Iceland, for the port of Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union On 27 June 1942. The convoy was detected by German forces on 1 July, after which it was shadowed continuously and attacked repeatedly by aircraft and submarines over the course of a week. The German success was possible through signals intelligence (SIGINT), cryptological analysis, and because the Allied escorts were withdrawn to counter a notional German surface threat, supposedly including capital ships.

It includes interviews with Arctic Convoy veterans, one in New Zealand and a Canadian. For the Americans, Admiral King was so angry he forbade any joint US - British joint naval operations for the rest of the war.
Sure doesn’t look like the history of WWII you see on the History Channel where Great Britain stands alone against Nazi tyranny.
Miracle at Dunkirk, not really, the Germans could have easily destroyed or captured the British Expeditionary Army at Dunkirk, but Hitler gave his generals the famous (but not so famous in British history of WWII) “Halt Order” that stopped the German Army from destroying the BEA.
This would be the proof Hitler would offer the British for his proposed grand Germany – British anti Soviet alliance.
Like the Serbian Holocaust, it’s just another part of the Hidden History of WWII.

But that would look like British betrayal of the Allied cause, exactly what Eisenhower felt. Was it British cowardice or perfidy? For the Americans, Admiral King was so angry he forbade any joint US - British joint naval operations for the rest of the war.
