Nicholas David Kershaw was born in Bristol and grew up in Ipswich, Suffolk. His father was a flautist and his mother was an opera singer. He was educated at Northgate Grammar School for Boys where he played the guitar – he was self-taught on this instrument. He left school in the middle of his A-levels and got a job at an unemployment benefit office. He also sang in a number of underground Ipswich bands. However, when the last of these, Fusion, split up in 1982, he embarked on a full-time career as a songwriter and performer.
The Works the fourth studio solo album by the English singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nik Kershaw. It is the last album that he created for MCA Records, in 1989. It introduces slight jazz influences in some tracks. The title could be interpreted as "the end", a possibility supported by the lyrics of the track "Take My Place". He did not release any new material until 15 Minutes, 10 years later.
The album was not commercially successful, failing to make any national impact in the European charts. The two singles from the album also failed to gather much attention, with "One Step Ahead" only peaking at #55 in the UK, and "Elisabeth's Eyes" failing to chart altogether.
Although the album was produced by Peter Wolf and co-produced by Brian Malouf, both singles were written shortly after Kershaw was unhappy with Wolf's production and his direction for the album. Both singles were produced by Kershaw and Julian Mendelsohn, whilst the two also re-worked the production of the entire album, earning them an additional production credit.
The Works is a UK-based retailer primarily dealing in discount books. In addition to books, The Works also sells arts and craft items, gifts, toys and games, stationery, and audiovisual goods. As of September 2011, The Works has over 300 branches across the UK.
Expansion and ownership
In 2007, The Works acquired 26 outlets of the Bargain Books and Bookworld chains after their parent company went into administration.
The Works itself entered administration in 2008 and was subsequently purchased by equity firm Endless.
Through its ownership by MGM, The Works is a sister network to This TV, a joint venture between MGM and Tribune Broadcasting which also focuses on films and classic television series from the 1950s to the 1990s and carries programming from The Works' corporate cousin MGM Television.
History
With little prior announcement of its formation in advance of its debut, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer launched The Works on April 1, 2014; the network debuted on nine television stations owned or operated by Titan Broadcast Management (though either NRJ TV or Ellis Communications), with an initial clearance rate of, at minimum, 31% of all television households in the United States. In addition to carrying The Works on its stations, Titan Broadcast Management also handles advertising sales for the network. To make room for the network, Titan ended its affiliations with the Retro Television Network on most of its stations, swapping out that network with The Works. The network was formally launched in January 2015, with 26 affiliate stations, covering 37% of the nation's television households.
A visionary, a master of his craft, an artist. Stanley Kubrick is my all time favorite director. For years I've rewatched his films MANY times and no films from any other director have affected me the same way Kubrick's have. Each and every film of his is an experience. Whether it be the spine tingling chills of 'The Shining' or the tear inducing laughs of 'Dr. Strangelove,' Kubrick's films always stick with the viewer. With this edition of 'The Works' I really wanted to channel what I feel makes Kubrick's films so special. So here you are, an extra long tribute that chronicles a lifetime of works from one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived.
Stanley, no one will ever make films as timeless as your own.

This was a trailer for a movie titled "The Works", produced at New York Institute of Technology - Computer Graphics Laboratory, in Old Westbury, NY. While this movie was never realized, the efforts produced many advances in CGI. The NYIT Laboratory was at the vanguard of Computer Generated imagery in the 1970's - 1980's. Many Notable names in the Computer Graphics community at one time worked at this research facility. Dr. Alexander Schure, (President and Chancellor of NYIT) funded the goals of the Laboratory.
