The Velvet Rope

The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. The album was released on October 7, 1997 through Virgin Records America. Following the release of her first greatest hits compilation Design of a Decade: 1986–1996, Jackson's recording contract with Virgin was up for renewal, making her the subject of a high-profile bidding war among parties including Sony Music, The Walt Disney Company, and Time Warner. She ultimately chose to renew her contract with Virgin for an unprecedented $80 million, making her the world's highest paid musical act for the second time in her career. She unveiled a new image, flaunting vibrant red hair, multiple tattoos, and acquiring facial and body piercings. She also abandoned her surname, releasing material solely under her first name.

Upon experiencing an emotional breakdown, Jackson began facing a long-term case of depression, struggling with body dysmorphia, anorexia, self-hatred, and physical abuse. She in turn developed her new record as a concept album, using introspection as its theme. Its title is an allusion to an individual's need to feel special, as well as a metaphor for emotional boundaries, in comparison to rope lines which prohibit access from spectators. Its composition addresses the politics and restraints of depression, self-worth, social networking, and domestic violence. It also encompasses themes of sadomasochism, same-sex relationships, sexual orientation and sexual questioning. It incorporates various genres, including R&B, trip hop, folk, jazz, pop and electronic music.

Tawny was full of life, happy, generous, pleasant. We talked for almost two hours. She followed up after in a series of texts, as kind and sweet as can be. She lit up when she talked about her daughters which were clearly her greatest accomplishment in life. Tawny went to her first rock concert at age 14, saw how the singer’s girlfriend got full VIP access and treatment and decided, “hey, I want that.” Tawny went out and made that happen. A rocker gal by nature, Tawny dated the guitarist from Ratt while in high school. From there she graduated, and “graduated”, by marrying Whitesnake’s lead singer. Although they divorced years later, she is most notorious for being “that girl” in the Whitesnake video. With that career defining moment she went from “groupie” to wife and celebrity. Choreographer Paula Abdul took one look at Tawny’s moves on the set of the Whitesnake video shoot and said, “you don’t need my help” and left! Tawny graced our small screens with roles on many of the beloved shows including Seinfeld (who she also dated), Married...With Children and America’s Funniest People. Before it was the “cool” thing to do, Tawny transitioned from “actress” to reality star starring in VH1s “The Surreal Life” and “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”. Speaking of Reality TV, who could forget Tawny’s 2017 appearance on E’s mega-hit Botched with Doctors Terry Dubrow and Paul Nassif. Of course, there was also that star studded role with Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party. What follows is an unedited, almost two hour, chat with Tawny as she shares stories from a life well lived opening up about career and personal highs, some of which have never before been revealed. A rocker gal by nature, Tawny dated the guitarist from Ratt while in high school. From there she graduated, and “graduated”, by marrying Whitesnake’s lead singer. Although they divorced years later, she is most notorious for being “that girl” in the Whitesnake video. With that career defining moment she went from “groupie” to wife and celebrity. Choreographer Paula Abdul took one look at Tawny’s moves on the set of the Whitesnake video shoot and said, “you don’t need my help” and left! Tawny graced our small screens with roles on many of the beloved shows including Seinfeld (who she also dated), Married...With Children and America’s Funniest People. Before it was the “cool” thing to do, Tawny transitioned from “actress” to reality star starring in VH1s “The Surreal Life” and “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”. Speaking of Reality TV, who could forget Tawny’s 2017 appearance on E’s mega-hit Botched with Doctors Terry Dubrow and Paul Nassif. Of course, there was also that star studded role with Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party. What follows is an unedited, almost two hour, chat with Tawny as she shares stories from a life well lived opening up about career and personal highs, some of which have never before been revealed. She discusses the book which she was working on because, as stated, “if I don't write my life story, somebody else is going to, and they're going to do it off of sound clips, that aren't true and aren't real about me. The Velvet Rope

The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. The album was released on October 7, 1997 through Virgin Records America. Following the release of her first greatest hits compilation Design of a Decade: 1986–1996, Jackson's recording contract with Virgin was up for renewal, making her the subject of a high-profile bidding war among parties including Sony Music, The Walt Disney Company, and Time Warner. She ultimately chose to renew her contract with Virgin for an unprecedented $80 million, making her the world's highest paid musical act for the second time in her career. She unveiled a new image, flaunting vibrant red hair, multiple tattoos, and acquiring facial and body piercings. She also abandoned her surname, releasing material solely under her first name.

Upon experiencing an emotional breakdown, Jackson began facing a long-term case of depression, struggling with body dysmorphia, anorexia, self-hatred, and physical abuse. She in turn developed her new record as a concept album, using introspection as its theme. Its title is an allusion to an individual's need to feel special, as well as a metaphor for emotional boundaries, in comparison to rope lines which prohibit access from spectators. Its composition addresses the politics and restraints of depression, self-worth, social networking, and domestic violence. It also encompasses themes of sadomasochism, same-sex relationships, sexual orientation and sexual questioning. It incorporates various genres, including R&B, trip hop, folk, jazz, pop and electronic music.
