Hamas releases first hostages | Israel-Palestine conflict
Footage released on Friday by Hamas' armed wing, al-Qassam Brigade, shows two American hostages being freed and handed over to the Red Cross.
The US citizens were identified as Chicago-area residents Judith Tai Raanan and her teenage daughter Natalie Shoshana Raanan, who Israel said were being reunited with family on an Israeli military base.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the mother and daughter were abducted by Iranian-backed Islamist militants of Hamas from Kibbutz Nahal Oz, where they were staying during the surprise assault on southern Israel from Gaza on 7 October.
Judith Raanan, 59, and her daughter Natalie, 17, had been visiting the kibbutz about a mile from the Gaza border as part of a trip to Israel that began in September to celebrate the Jewish holidays and t...

Aftermath of deadly Israeli air strikes on Gaza Strip and West Bank
Israeli warplanes struck targets across Gaza overnight and into Sunday, as well as two airports in Syria and a mosque in the occupied West Bank allegedly used by militants, as the two-week-old war with Hamas threatened to spiral into a broader conflict.
Israel has traded fire with Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group on a near-daily basis since the war began, and tensions are soaring in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where Israeli forces have battled militants in refugee camps and carried out two airstrikes in recent days.

Met Police chiefs summoned by ministers for allowing ‘jihad’ chant at Palestine rally
Police will be summoned to explain their actions after allowing a “jihad” chant at a London rally, a minister has said.
Robert Jenrick reprimanded the Metropolitan Police for its response to the “completely reprehensible” behaviour, insisting it incited “terrorist violence” and should be tackled with “the full force of the law”.
He said many would have been “surprised” by the Met’s analysis after the force said jihad had “a number of meanings” and concluded no offence had taken place.
It comes as police said anti-Semitic offences in London have increased by over 1,000 per cent this month compared to last year.
At an event on Saturday organised by Hizb ut-Tahrir, members of the extremist Islamist group erected a banner with the slogan “Muslim Armies! Rescue the people of Palestine”.

Putin invites Biden ‘for tea' as US-supplied ATACMS arrive in Ukraine
Vladimir Putin has invited Joe Biden for tea, suggesting that he take back the long-range Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) the US sent to Ukraine.
The Russian president urged Mr Biden to visit Moscow “for blinis and tea” a day after Ukrainian forces used American-supplied ATACMS for the first time in some of the most destructive attacks to have been carried out on Russian air assets since the beginning of the war.
His comments could be viewed as a veiled threat, given the Kremlin’s previous form for allegedly poisoning the tea of its enemies.
Putin said: “They will take the ATACMS back for another invasion. He will visit us in the capital for blinis and tea.
“If we are losing the war, like you are saying, why ATACMS?”

Judith Raanan, 59, and her daughter Natalie, 17, had been visiting the kibbutz about a mile from the Gaza border as part of a trip to Israel that began in September to celebrate the Jewish holidays and the 85th birthday of Judith's mother, US news media outlets reported, citing relatives as their sources.
The pair were handed over to Israeli forces at the border of the Gaza Strip and were "on their way to a meeting point at a military base in the centre of the country, where their family members are waiting for them," Netanyahu said in a statement.
US President Joe Biden thanked Qatar and Israel for their partnership in securing the release of the two women.
The women were among about 200 hostages that Hamas said it took during the deadly rampage its forces carried out from the Gaza Strip on communities and military bases in southern Israel, part of the bloodiest attack on the country since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
It was not immediately clear why the Raanans were chosen as the first hostages from 7 October incursion to be released, except that a spokesman for the armed wing of Hamas, the Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, said that they were freed "for humanitarian reasons" in response to Qatari mediation.

Up to 100,000 people marched in London on Saturday in support of Palestinians, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Protesters gathered in the rain at Marble Arch near London’s Hyde Park before marching to Whitehall.
Waving Palestinian flags, participants called for an end to Israel’s blockade and airstrikes launched in the wake of Hamas’ brutal incursion two weeks ago.
Two posters held aloft featured a Hitler moustache painted onto photographs of both Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, and Rishi Sunak, the UK prime minister. The caption underneath read “Crime Minister”.
British authorities have urged demonstrators to be mindful of the pain and anxiety felt by the Jewish community.
London’s Metropolitan Police force says it has seen a 13-fold upsurge in reports of antisemitic offences in October compared to last year. Reports of anti-Muslim crimes have more than doubled.
