It was commissioned in 1955 for a cost of $58,000 (equivalent to $512,345 today), and dedicated in 1958.
In its left hand, the large seated figure holds a gilt bronze sphere emanating rays to symbolize God. The people in the figure's right hand are a family group. The 26-foot (7.9 m) sculpture was the largest cast bronze statue since the Renaissance when it was first installed.
It was cast in Oslo, Norway.
The statue underwent a restoration in 2006, funded by foundations and other private donations.
In 2013, art dealer and art historian Eric Ian Hornak Spoutz was quoted in the Detroit News stating that the value of the statue is in excess of $1,000,000.
Name
The name emerged from an inscription from 2 Corinthians (3:17) on the wall behind it:
AND WHERE THE SPIRIT OF THE
LORD IS, THERE IS LIBERTY."
II CORINTHIANS 3:17
The Spirit is a fictional masked crimefighter created by cartoonist Will Eisner. He first appeared June 2, 1940 as the main feature of a 16-page, tabloid-sized, newsprint comic book insert distributed in the Sunday edition of Register and Tribune Syndicate newspapers; it was ultimately carried by 20 Sunday newspapers, with a combined circulation of five million copies during the 1940s. "The Spirit Section", as the insert was popularly known, continued until October 5, 1952. It generally included two other, four-page strips (initially Mr. Mystic and Lady Luck), plus filler material. Eisner was the editor, but also wrote and drew most entries—after the first few months, he had the uncredited assistance of writer Jules Feiffer and artists Jack Cole and Wally Wood, though Eisner's singular vision for the character was a unifying factor.
From the 1960s to 1980s, a handful of new Eisner Spirit stories appeared in Harvey Comics and elsewhere, and Warren Publishing and Kitchen Sink Press variously reprinted the newspaper feature in black-and-white comics magazines and in color comic books. In the 1990s and 2000s, Kitchen Sink Press and DC Comics also published new Spirit stories by other writers and artists.
The Michael Jordan statue, officially known as The Spirit (and sometimes referred to as Michael Jordan's Spirit), is a bronze sculpture by Omri Amrany and Julie Rotblatt-Amrany outside the United Center in the Near West Sidecommunity area of Chicago. The sculpture was originally commissioned after Jordan's initial retirement following three consecutive NBA championships and unveiled prior to the Bulls taking residence in their new home stadium the following year. Depicting Basketball Hall of Fame member Michael Jordan and unveiled on November 1, 1994, the 12-foot (3.7m) sculpture stands atop a 5-foot (1.52m)black granite base. Although not critically well received, the statue has established its own legacy as a meeting place for fans at subsequent Bulls championships and as a rallying point for Chicago Blackhawks fans during their prideful times.
Recorded during the Goodnight L.A. tour, the selection of recordings was made according to the band's live set. The band selected the recording that they were most happy with. Although it was originally intended to be a double CD covering Magnum's full set at the time, it was changed to a single disc to cut costs.
Polydor reluctantly promoted the album and the tour, following the disappointing sales of Goodnight L.A.. Considering Polydor's decision to market Magnum towards an American market, the band were unhappy with the promotion of both Goodnight L.A. and The Spirit. After the tour to promote The Spirit, the band decided to leave Polydor, agreeing to pay to end their contract with their own money.

The Detroit metropolitan region holds roughly one-half of Michigan's population.
The highly anticipated mixtape caused the mixtape site DatPiff to crash upon the mixtapes eventual release. Detroit was viewed 1.5 million times on the day of release and was downloaded close to 700,000 - with 500,000 downloads within three hours. It has been downloaded over a million times.
Background
Sean first announced the mixtape on August 20, 2012 via Twitter and a YouTube video titled "Big Sean Mixtape Announcement 1972". Big Sean released three song previews in the shape of short music videos as promotion before the mixtape release; "How It Feel" on August 21, "24 Karats of Gold" on August 28 and "RWT" on September 4. Sean paid for the expenses of the videos himself. The title of the mixtape pays homage to Sean's hometown of Detroit.
Détroit is a French musical duo formed in 2012 by French rock musician Bertrand Cantat and French bass player Pascal Humbert. Both were part of the rock formation Passion Fodder from 1985 to 1991 before they split up and Cantat moved on to establish his own famous band Noir Désir, whereas Humbert went on to join the American band 16 Horsepower, and later to Lilium and Wovenhand, amongst others.
The duo Détroit released their greatly expected debut album Horizons on 18 November 2013. It was recorded in Vega Studios and produced by Pascal Humbert and Bruno Green. The debut release from the album is "Droit dans le soleil" that appeared in the SNEP Top 10 in its first week of release. It has also charted in Belgium's French records market and in Switzerland.
The formation of the duo follows the announcement of Cantat's band Noir Désir in 2010. The two collaborated in 2011 in the album Chœurs with musicians Bernard Falaise and Alexander MacSween. The music was composed for Wajdi Mouawad's production of a trilogy from Sophocles titled Le Cycle des Femmes: Trois histoires de Sophocle or just Des Femmes.

Trailer promo for American Makeover Episode 4: The Spirit of Detroit
Synopsis:
In folklore, a bullet cast from silver is the only weapon that is effective against a super villain. In the real world, urban decline cannot be reversed with any one silver bullet solution, no matter how expensive or gilded. Urban revitalization must happen organically, incrementally, in thousands of small steps and small efforts. Lean urbanism is about making small possible.
Detroit’s greatest hope is the ongoing mass migration – both from its sprawling suburbs and from across America – back to the city and its urban neighborhoods. If they are empowered and unencumbered, these immigrants will change Detroit. After the failure of so many silver bullets, it’s time for lean urbanism to revitalize the city.

Lyrics:
When the first rays of dawn illuminate and warm the coldest stone
May their light in the darkness let me know that I am not alone
Though I see my earthly body in this state of solitude
May the song in my heart know it's just an interlude
And when fear turns our minds to doubt the sun's light ever should return
May our bond from afar ignite a spark that fervently shall burn
Should we see our neighbor cast beneath the boots of those with might

The film features a narrator and music over otherwise silent shots of the events.
After a brief introduction showing the state and Marshall Fredericks, works are filmed applying a patina to the bronze-cast pieces in Norway. They then construct a frame to support the burlap-covered sculpture during its voyage across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the German freighter THOMAS SCHULTE. The camera rolls as the sculpture is loaded into the freighter by crane.
The SCHULTE is then shown being unloaded at the port of Detroit after its arrival on September 20, 1958. First Fredericks and the customs officials inspect the miniatures of the statue which were shipped along with it. A crane is then employed to lift the statue from the ship onto a Dearborn Machinery Movers flatbed trailer on the shore.
At the City-County Building, a crowd has gathered to watch the installation. Two cranes are used to lift and tilt the statue into position. Frederick and his family are shown watching the move.
The film then moves forward three days to the statue's formal dedication on September 23, 1958. Former mayor and secretary of the Detroit-Wayne Joint Building Authority Eugene Van Antwerp presides over the occasion as the master of ceremonies. The event also features an invocation by Reverend Alan A. Zahn, a performance by the Department of Parks and Recreation Civic Center Coral, Norwegian consulate general Elvin Berg, Marshall Fredericks, Monsignor Edward J. Hickey, Charles F. Edgecomb of the Wayne County Board of Auditors, Mayor Louis C. Miriani, and a closing benediction from Rabbi Morris Adler.
The film closes after the narrator discusses the seals and the quote from 2 Corinthians behind the figure, as well as the symbolism of the sphere and family held in the statue's hands.

May our voices sing out for that precious flame to grow
Till it roars like the fire we knew was in our spirits all along
May we fuel it together evermore by joining hearts in song
And for those we have lost
Deprived of any chance or any choice
I will stop in my tracks
To say your name
And listen to your voice.

Should we see our neighbor cast beneath the boots of those with might
May that spark light a torch to stand up for what is right
Should the shadows hide its ember or the wind diffuse its glow
May our voices sing out for that precious flame to grow
Till it roars like the fire we knew was in our spirits all along
May we fuel it together evermore by joining hearts in song
And for those we have lost
Deprived of any chance or any choice
I will stop in my tracks
To say your name
And listen to your voice.

Did you know? Marshall Fredericks not only waived his creative fee when he designed and sculpted the Spirit of Detroit statue, but its construction cost him money. He considered its creation to be a civic duty. #DidYouKnowDetroit
