The plot revolves around unmarried Sharon Rabbitte's pregnancy, and the unexpected effects this has on her conservative, working class Dublin family.
In the Rabbite household, unwed motherhood isn't the disaster it might be elsewhere. When twenty-year-old Sharon informs her father, Jimmy Sr., and mother, Veronica that she's "up the pole", they aren't thrilled, but there's no display of histrionics. After asking who the father is (and not being told), Jimmy Sr. invites his daughter out to the local pub for a drink. Sharon's friends are as interested as her family in the father's identity, but she resolutely keeps mum about the truth until an event in the neighborhood brings it into the open. It turns out that the father was her friend Yvonne's father George Burgess, who took advantage of her while she was drunk. Sharon tells everyone that it was a Spanish sailor, to avoid the embarrassment and the shame of everybody knowing. However most of the town believe the truth. She is often criticised and made fun of because of Burgess being the father. Because of the incident, Burgess runs away from home, and Sharon quits her job as a shelf stacker.
Young Sharon Curley becomes pregnant, but refuses to tell anyone who the father is. She decides to keep the baby ("snapper") and her family, each in their own way, eventually decides to support her. Her father particularly studies up on childbirth and female anatomy (with gratifying results for his wife as a bonus).
Soon after a wild night at the pub, twenty-year-old Sharon Curley (Tina Kellegher) finds herself expecting a little "snapper" by a man she loathes. Her refusal to name the father sets in motion a family drama involving her three brothers, two sisters, and her parents, along with her employers and all her friends. Kellegher, playing the role as a coarse, earthy, yet remarkably sensible young woman (with the exception of her excessive drinking during her pregnancy) soon discovers who her friends really are, as some people tease and torment her, some make remarks to her siblings, some force her father to take direct action in her defence, and all spread gossip.

This is a fish I've wanted to catch my entire life! The Cubera Snapper is the largest snapper species in the world. Every year around the full moon in August and September Giant Cubera snapper spawn offshore on wrecks. This makes it easier to locate these generally solitary and nomadic fish. Cubera Snapper have such large teeth and powerful jaws that they are able to feed on live spiny lobster, which is what we use as bait. Live lobster are the best bait to use when targeting cubera snapper, as this is one of their main staples in their diet! Big Cubera Snapper often get a bad name when it comes to table fare, as they are thought to contain Ciguatera which can cause poisoning. This is more seen in other parts of the Caribbean and the Bahamas and rarely in Florida.
