The Screaming Blue Messiahs were a rock band, formed in 1983 in London by guitarist and singer Bill Carter, bass player and backing singer Chris Thompson and drummer Kenny Harris. The group emerged in the wake of the pub rock and punk scenes that had been very predominant on the UK capital's live music circuit during the late '70s/ early '80s. The band, a classic power trio, was active between 1983 and 1990 and released three major labelLPs. They toured extensively throughout Europe, North America and Australasia, garnering wide critical acclaim for their aggressive blend of rhythm and blues, punk and rockabilly.
History
Early years
Before founding the Screaming Blue Messiahs, its three members had played together as The Small Brothers. Thompson and Carter had been part of the Captain Beefheart-influenced band Motor Boys Motor; together with Tony Moon on vocals, they recorded several tracks under that name on 24 August 1981 for John Peel's show on BBC Radio 1 and released a self-titled album. Initially, after Harris joined Carter and Thompson, the band briefly continued to perform under the name 'Motor Boys Motor'. According to Carter, the final name was chosen upon the suggestion of Ace/Big Beat's Ted Caroll, who was concerned that the band's initial proposal of 'The Blues Messiahs' sounded too pub rock.
All Shook Down is the seventh and final studio album by the band The Replacements, released on September 25, 1990.
This album was originally intended to be front man Paul Westerberg's solo artist debut. As a result of its initial intent, All Shook Down is marked by numerous session, side and journeyman-musicians, supplemented by the three other 'Mats themselves. Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson plays bass and sings backup vocals on a number of the tracks, while guitarist Slim Dunlap and drummer Chris Mars appear on a few tracks each. John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground, plays viola on "Sadly Beautiful". The only track featuring the entire band performing together is the acoustic rave-up "Attitude".
The band issued promotional-only singles for "Merry Go Round", "Someone Take The Wheel", "When It Began", and "Happy Town". "Merry Go Round" was the band's most successful Modern Rock Tracks single, reaching #1 for four non-consecutive weeks.
Mars left the band in November 1990 (his last appearance as a Replacement being in the "Merry Go Round" video) and Steve Foley filled in on drums for the six-month All Shook Down Tour of 1991. The band were nominated for the Best Alternative Video and Best Special Effects categories at the 1991 MTV Video Music Awards for the claymation/live action music video for "When It Began". The band played its last show on Independence Day, July 4, 1991. They also received a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
I don't own footage or music. But I do own all the Messiah albums. Record company lawyers please don't sue me or knock off audio again. I'm only trying to expose people to a great, sorely missed band.

This promo has never been shown on television (to my knowledge). We fell out with the record company because they wanted something more 'cartoony' and children's TV-friendly. We fell out with Bill Carter the lead singer because he wanted something with less animation in it. He sat in the edit room pleading 'But it's not about the Flintstones...' Stuck between two sides and unable to please both, we walked away from the project. The record company won and a re-cut version with more colour Flintstones footage was broadcast in the end.

Personally, I still really like it (and I liked Bill very much too). It was very hard to get all those wipe effects (there are no actual cuts in the video, everything slides or wipes) back in those days with primitive linear video editing technology. Would be dead easy now of course.
The wonderful actor is Richard Rees who I managed to get to be in my short film Vacant Possession over twenty years later!

To collapse in a sugar cane Suck it sweet to kill the pain There was someoene i was looking for There is no more My tongue is weak from a kick or two The word is dry, I think of you Tie my face to the back of a jet To keep my essence there And its been a week And its been a week too long There are several things that i've been doing wrong You see the time it takes for you Is the time it takes for me So don't agree If it's late then I will go Turn the lights out, turn it slow Like you turned me upside down And faced the ground Spinnin' left I spin at you Listen girl I think of you Back up by the back of the chair I left you there And its been a week And its been a week too long There are several things that i've been doing wrong You see the time it takes for you Is the time it takes for me So don't agree You can be my destiny You can mean that much to me You can be my destiny You can mean that much to me You can be my destiny You can mean that much to me You can be my destiny You can mean that much to me
