The Scottish Government (Scottish Gaelic:Riaghaltas na h-Alba; Scots:Scots Govrenment) is the executive of the devolvedScottish Parliament. The government was established in 1999 as the Scottish Executive under section 44(1) of the Scotland Act 1998, which created a devolved administration for Scotland in line with a the result of the 1997 referendum on Scottish devolution. The government consists of cabinet secretaries, who attend cabinet meetings, and ministers, who do not. It is led by the first minister, who selects the cabinet secretaries and ministers with approval of parliament.
Responsibilities
The Scottish Government is responsible in Scotland for all issues that are not explicitly reserved to the British parliament at Westminster by Schedule 5 to the Scotland Act 1998; such devolved matters include health, education, justice and policing, rural affairs, economic development and transport. The Scottish Government also has administrative responsibility for some matters where it does not have legislative power. An example is Sections 36 & 37 of the Electricity Act 1989 which allow the Scottish Government to authorise power transmission lines and grant power generation consents.
The Scottish Parliament (Scottish Gaelic:Pàrlamaid na h-Alba; Scots: The Scots Pairlament) is the devolved national, unicameral legislature of Scotland. Located in the Holyrood area of the capital city, Edinburgh, it is frequently referred to informally as "Holyrood".
The Parliament is a democratically elected body comprising 129 members known as Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs), elected for four-year terms under the additional member system: 73 MSPs represent individual geographical constituencies elected by the plurality ("first past the post") system, while a further 56 are returned from eight additional member regions, each electing seven MSPs. The most recent general election to the Parliament was held on 5 May 2011.
The parliament, which is also referred to as the Estates of Scotland, the Community of the Realm, the Three Estates (Scots:Thrie Estaitis), the Scots Parliament, or the auld Scots Parliament (English: old), met until prorogued sine die at the time of the Acts of Union in 1707. Thereafter the Parliament of Great Britain operated for both England and Scotland, thus creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
The pre-Union parliament was long portrayed as a constitutionally defective body that acted merely as a rubber stamp for royal decisions, but research during the early 21st century has found that it played an active role in Scottish affairs, and was sometimes a thorn in the side of the Scottish crown.
In modern use, "Scottish people" or "Scots" is used to refer to anyone whose linguistic, cultural, family ancestral or genetic origins are from within Scotland. The Latin word Scotti originally referred to the Gaels but came to describe all inhabitants of Scotland. Though sometimes considered archaic or pejorative, the term Scotch has also been used for the Scottish people, though this usage is current primarily outside Scotland.
There are people of Scottish descent in many countries other than Scotland. Emigration, influenced by factors such as the Highland and Lowland Clearances, Scottish participation in the British Empire, and latterly industrial decline and unemployment, resulted in Scottish people being found throughout the world. Large populations of Scottish people settled the new-world lands of North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. There is a Scottish presence at a particularly high level in Canada, which has the highest level per-capita of Scots descendants in the world and second largest population of descended Scots ancestry after the United States. They took with them their Scottish languages and culture.

Scottish Government Debate: Growing the Economy - 19 June 2024
Every nine minutes someone is stopped for speeding in Scotland.
The new campaign, launched by the Scottish Government, encourages drivers to watch their speed in built-up areas.
The advert shows drivers in different situations – a mum on the school run, people travelling to work – who are stopped by the police FOR speeding, every nine minutes. And ends with a cyclist being treated in an ambulance with the sombre message: ‘Sometimes, they’re stopped BY speeding.’
The campaign encourages people to drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions. Research tells us that most drivers (87%) think that hitting a pedestrian at 30mph wouldn’t be fatal. Sadly, this is not the case. Pedestrians are seven times as likely to be killed if they’re hit at 30mph, rather than 20.

Around 55% of road deaths in Scotland happen on country roads, and driving too fast for the conditions is the most common cause. Last year alone 755 people were killed or seriously injured whilst driving on country roads. 75% of them were male.
This campaign aims to show that you never know what’s round the corner when travelling on a country road, and driving at an appropriate speed gives you more time to react.

UK government blocks Scotland's gender recognition bill • FRANCE 24 English
The UK government on Monday took the unprecedented step of preventing a law passed by the Scottish Parliament from coming into force. The controversial Gender Recognition Reform Bill, approved by Holyrood in December, makes it easier for people to legally change their gender and was a long-running demand of trans activists. But Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said the bill "would have a significant impact on, amongst other things, GB-wide equalities matters in Scotland, England and Wales".

Every pensioner in Scotland to receive winter fuel payment next year
The Scottish government has announced that all pensioners in Scotland will receive a winter heating payment in the year 2025 to 2026.
The devolved benefit, if passed, will help the estimated 900,000 people north of the border who were cut off from accessing the winter fuel payment - which was universal until changes were made under the Labour government in September.
Under the devolved government's plans, those in receipt of pension credit or other benefits will receive a £200 or £300 payment depending on their age, while all other pensioners will receive a reduced payment of £100.

Political blooper: MP's Scottish accent baffles British parliamentarian
Members of the British parliament broke into laughter on October 18 when New-Zealand born Tory MP, Paul Beresford, visibly struggled to understand his Scottish colleague who was speaking with an accent.
Beresford initially apologized to Scottish National Party's (SNP) David Linden before asking him to repeat his question. But after a second attempt he sheepishly suggested Linden speak more slowly.
After two failed attempts in the miscommunication, Deputy Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, suggested they resolve the matter by letter.

Scottish Parliament backs referendum call - BBC News
Nicola Sturgeon's call for a second referendum on independence for Scotland has been formally backed by the Scottish Parliament.
MSPs voted by 69 to 59 in favour of seeking permission for a referendum before the UK leaves the EU. Ms Sturgeon says the move is needed to allow Scotland to decide what path to follow in the wake of the Brexit vote. But the UK government has already said it will block a referendum until after the Brexit process has been completed.

For more information on the campaign, including statistics, resources and interactive games, please click on the following link:
http://dontriskit.info/in-town-slow-down/
Around 55% of road deaths in Scotland happen on country roads, and driving too fast for the conditions is the most common cause. Last year alone 755 people were killed or seriously injured whilst driving on country roads. 75% of them were male.
This campaign aims to show that you never know what’s round the corner when travelling on a country road, and driving at an appropriate speed gives you more time to react.

The Scottish Government has announced £500m in cuts to services as it tries to fill a budget black hole.
Outlining the levels of savings, Scotland’s finance secretary said £188m will be found across Government, including by cutting active travel funding, £65m by re-purposing cash from other projects and around £60m through already announced spending controls.

One of Scotland's most ambitious community arts projects, which tells Scotland's colourful story from prehistory to modern times has been unveiled for the first time at the Scottish Parliament by the Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon Tricia Marwick MSP.

I've tried and tried to run and hide To find a life that's new But wherever I go I always know I can't escape from you A jug of wine to numb my mind But what good does it do? The jug runs dry and still I cry I can't escape from you These wasted years are souvenirs Of love I thought was true Your memory is chained to me I can't escape from you There is no end, I can't pretend That dreams will soon come true A slave too long to a heart of stone I can't escape from you
