Professor Ludwig Von Drake is one of Walt Disney's cartoon and comic book characters. He was first introduced on September 24, 1961, as the presenter (and singer of "The Spectrum Song") in the cartoon An Adventure in Color, part of the first episode of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color on NBC. Said to be an uncle of Donald Duck, he was supposedly named after either Ludwig von Mises or Ludwig van Beethoven. He is described as a scientist, lecturer, psychologist, and world traveler. The character displayed his "expert" knowledge on a variety of subjects in eighteen episodes of the classic anthology series, as well as on a number of Disneyland Records.
Paul Frees was the original voice of Ludwig Von Drake. After Frees' death in 1986, Walker Edmiston voiced the role.
Character
Ludwig Von Drake comes from Vienna, Austria and has a fascination with knowledge. Since his youth he has been trying to obtain as many diplomas, in any science, as possible. When he is consulted by other family members, it is a running gag that he almost invariably turns out to have a university degree relevant for whatever information they are seeking. He is often shown as having little social competence, however, and is often portrayed as being very forgetful, sometimes even somewhat senile. In the comics Ludwig usually visits with Donald Duck and Donald's nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. On occasion, Daisy Duck would coax (or even trick) the professor into giving lectures and tours for her ladies' club. Sometimes Ludwig and Gyro Gearloose have competed as to who is the greater inventor.
Walt Disney's "An Adventure in Color and Mathmagic Land" Season 8 Ep 1
From Season 8 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 1: An Adventure in Color and Mathmagic Land which originally aired on September 24th, 1961. A new era in television begins for Walt Disney as he moves his show to NBC and begins broadcasting in color. To heighten the impact that color will portray in his shows, Walt discusses the early black and white days of the movies. The arrival of Technicolor, seen in clips from "Flowers and Trees" and "Fantasia," allowed moviemakers to present their product in lifelike color. The final portion of the program is a presentation of the 1959 theatrical release "Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land," in which the intrepid duck finds himself in a strange land where mathematical formulas and odd creatures abound.

Debuting in 1961 as a one-off television character, Walt Disney’s Ludwig Von Drake – the first Disney character created for television – became a runaway success, soon becoming a regularly recurring character on Walt’s Anthology Series, and appearing in a swarm of extended media and merchandise. Over the years, Ludwig has seen a healthy handful of appearances in Disney media and remains a beloved member of the extended Disney character lexicon. To celebrate more than 60 years of the Kooky Professor, I’ll trace his entire Evolution from 1961 to now, covering his history and inception and covering his many appearances and changes over the years.

Walt Disney's "Fly With Von Drake" Season 10 Ep 3
From Season 10 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 3: Fly With Von Drake which originally aired on October 13th, 1963. Walt opens the show by commenting on our long interest in the subject of flight and outer space. An animated sequence shows how some of the more fanciful speculators imagined life on Mars. Then, the science of manned flight gets the unique Ludwig Von Drake treatment as the self-styled expert attempts to trace the history of aviation and explain how planes and balloons can fly.

I heard the bells on Christmas day Their old familiar carols play And wild and sweet the words repeat, Of peace on earth, good will to men. I thought how as the day had come, The belfries of all Christendom Had roll'd along with unbroken song Of peace on earth, good will to men. And in despair I bow'd my head: There is no peace on earth, I said, For hate is strong, and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men. Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to men. Till ringing, singing on its way The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, a chant sublime Of peace on earth, good will to men.
