World Theatre The School for Scandal (BBC TV Episode 1959)
With JOAN PLOWRIGHT, FELIX AYLMER. Television adaptation of the play by RICHARD SHERIDAN. A classic satire of the morals and manners of 18th century England, brilliantly performed by Joan Plowright (Lady Olivier) and an impeccable cast. The play, featuring characters with names like Mr. Snake, Lady Sneerwell, Mrs. Candour and Mr. Backbite, centers on the adventures and romantic exploits of two brothers, Joseph and Charles Surface: the former is moral, upright and well-respected; the latter is a dissipated, extravagant libertine. Their wealthy uncle, whom they havent seen for years, devises an elaborate scheme to test their true merits, eventually proving that appearances - or "surfaces" - are indeed deceptive. John, Lord Teylesmore (Ralph Forbes), thinks he's found a way to get popular London stage actress Elsie Hilary (Ruth Chatterton) to marry him after a year of her turning down his daily proposals - he'll announce their engagement in all the papers! Shocked and dismayed, John's staid, blue blood family attempt to get Elsie to break off the "engagement" with a 5,000 Pound bribe. Infuriated, she is now determined to wed the young aristocrat. An emergency family council is called at the Teylesmore country estate with John's favorite cousin, Edward (Basil Rathbone) - used to his family's disapproval thanks to a scandal of his own - arguing for Elsie's acceptance. Convinced she will soon chafe against the confines of the ruling cla...

The Controversial Scene that took 'The Beverly Hillbillies' off the Air
The Beverly Hillbillies is an American sitcom television series broadcast on CBS from 1962 to 1971. The show had an ensemble cast featuring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer Jr. as the Clampetts, a poor backwoods family from the Ozarks region of Arkansas[1] who move to posh Beverly Hills, California after striking oil on their land. The show was produced by Filmways and was created by writer Paul Henning. It was followed by two other Henning-inspired "country cousin" series on CBS: Petticoat Junction and its spin-off Green Acres, which reversed the rags-to-riches, the country-to-city model of The Beverly Hillbillies.
The Beverly Hillbillies ranked among the top 20 most-watched programs on television for eight of its nine seasons, twice ranking as the number one series ...

It all results in an exceedingly intricate, wickedly funny series of events that continually twist and turn in every possible direction. Sheridans awesomely crafted drama provides devastating observations on society, and this production is a thoroughly engrossing, first-rate piece of live television.

The Beverly Hillbillies ranked among the top 20 most-watched programs on television for eight of its nine seasons, twice ranking as the number one series of the year, with 16 episodes that remain among the 100 most-watched television episodes in history. It accumulated seven Emmy nominations during its run. The series remains in syndicated reruns, and its ongoing popularity spawned a 1993 film remake by 20th Century Fox.
