The Rounders is a lighthearted 1965 film directed by Burt Kennedy and starring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. It is based on the 1960 novel of the same name by Max Evans.
Plot
Ben Jones (Glenn Ford) and Marion 'Howdy' Lewis (Henry Fonda) are two easygoing, modern-day cowboys who make a meager living breaking wild horses. Their frequent employer is Jim Ed Love (Chill Wills), a shrewd businessman who always gets the better of them. After they bring him a string of tamed horses and spend the winter rounding up stray cows, he talks them into taking a nondescript roan horse in lieu of some of their wages.
Ben finds (to his great and frequent discomfort) that the horse is unrideable. Rather than turning it into soap or dog food, he comes up with the bright idea of taking it to a rodeo and betting other cowhands they cannot ride it, thereby doubling their earnings. Along the way, the duo stop to help two none-too-bright strippers, Mary (Sue Ane Langdon) and Sister (Hope Holiday), with their car, which has broken down. Not knowing much about cars, they give them a ride to the nearest garage, but end up getting to know them better (going skinny dipping with them) and taking them along to the rodeo.
The original line-up consisted of Brian Whitten (vocals, kazoo), Dave Spindle (guitar), Ryan Taylor(guitar), Adam Enevoldsen (bass), and Stuart Williamson (drums). Their first album, Little Bitty Can of Worms, independently released in 2003, was recorded at Bell Labs Recording Studio in Norman, Oklahoma. The album is an eclectic mix of original jug band music, hokum, alt.country, Chicago style and Mississippi Delta blues.
Shortly after the release of Little Bitty Can of Worms, bassist/songwriter Adam Enevoldsen left the band to pursue other musical endeavors. The group subsequently became a four piece with Dave Spindle taking over the bass duties. 2004 saw the independent release of their second album, now-a-day songs. The title of the album came from a book of poetry, Now-A-Day Poems, by early 20th century African-American poet Philander Chase Johnson. During the fall of 2005, The Rounders added local guitar player Michael Stone to their line-up.
Selected episodes with notable guest stars include: "A Horse on Jim Ed Love", series premiere with Harry Carey, Jr.; "It's a Noble Thing to Do", with John Smith, formerly Slim Sherman on NBC's Laramie; "Don't Buffalo Me", with Jay Silverheels, formerly Tonto of The Lone Ranger, as John Tallgrass; "The Moonshine Still Shines"; "It Takes Only One to Suffer"; "The Scavenger Hunt" with Zsa Zsa Gabor as Ilona Hobson; "Some Things Are Not for Sale"; "Four Alarm Wing Ding", with Dick Haynes as a sheriff; "Horse of a Different Cutter" with Andy Devine as Honest John Denton and Strother Martin as Cousin Fletch; "Polo, Anyone?", with Jay C. Flippen as Kenny Fahrbush; "Efficiency Is for Experts", and "What Elephants?", the series finale, in which Ben and Howdy try to hide an elephant in plain sight.
