"The Rose of Tralee" is a nineteenth-century Irishballad about a woman called Mary, who because of her beauty was called The Rose of Tralee. The Rose of Tralee festival had been inspired by the ballad.
The words of the song are credited to Edward Mordaunt Spencer and the music to Charles William Glover, but a story circulated in connection with the festival claims that the song was written by William Pembroke Mulchinock, a wealthy Protestant, out of love for Mary O'Connor, a poor Catholic maid in service to his parents.

Popular culture
The song is sung by the cast at the end of the play "Thirst" (1942) by Flann O'Brien.
In the film "The Luck of the Irish (1948 film)" the song is sung by Irish Tenor Jimmy O'Brien, who completes the song without missing a beat despite the outbreak of a brawl.
"The Rose" is a classic pop song written by Amanda McBroom and made famous by Bette Midler who recorded it for the soundtrack of the 1979 film The Rose in which it plays under the closing credits.
Background and Bette Midler version
"The Rose" was first recorded by Bette Midler for the soundtrack of the 1979 film The Rose in which it plays under the closing credits. However the song was not written for the movie: Amanda McBroom recalls, "I wrote it in 1977 [or] 1978, and I sang it occasionally in clubs. . . . Jim Nabors had a local talk show, and I sang ["The Rose"] on his show once." According to McBroom she wrote "The Rose" in response to her manager's suggestion that she write "some Bob Seger-type tunes" to expedite a record deal: McBroom obliged by writing "The Rose" in forty-five minutes. Said McBroom: "'The Rose' is . . . just one verse [musically] repeated three times. When I finished it, I realized it doesn't have a bridge or a hook, but I couldn't think of anything to [add]."
It was released by HIM International Music on 1 June 2003. The music video for "花都開好了" (Flowers Have Blossomed) was S.H.E's first outdoor music video since Youth Society's "熱帶雨林" (Tropical Rain Forest). Selina and Joe Cheng starred in the music video for "葉子" (Leaf).
The track "花都開好了" (Flowers Have Blossomed) is listed at number 29 on Hit Fm Taiwan's Hit Fm Annual Top 100 Singles Chart (Hit-Fm年度百首單曲) for 2003. The album won Best Original Soundtrack at the 2004 HITO Radio Music Awards presented by Taiwanese radio station Hit FM.

The pale moon was rising above the green mountain The sun was declining beneath the blue sea When I strayed with my love to the pure crystal fountain That stands in the beautiful vale of Tralee She was lovely and fair as the rose of the summer Yet 'twas not her beauty alone that won me Oh no, 'twas the truth in her eyes ever dawning That made me love Mary, the rose of Tralee The cool shades of evening their mantle were spreading And Mary, all smiling, was listening to me The moon through the valley her pale rays was shedding
