On 27 May 2014 the two incoming MEPs announced their decision to sit with the S&D group in the European Parliament, whose intake included two MEPs from the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK), citing the group’s commitment to “tackling the recession and unemployment in Greece and the South in general is among its political priorities”, while ruling out joining the Party of European Socialists.
WHCN ("The River 105.9") is an adult hits music formatted radio station based in Hartford, Connecticut. The city of license is Hartford. The iHeartMedia, Inc. outlet broadcasts at 105.9MHz with an effective radiated power of 16,000 watts from West Peak State Park in Meriden, CT. Its format blends classic rock and new wave, with current and recurrent hit songs of today. It is similar to the "JACK-FM" formats that have been heard across the U.S. Studios are at 10 Columbus Boulevard, in Hartford, Connecticut. "The River" brand, shared with many adult contemporary stations nationwide, is a local reference to the Connecticut River.
WHCN has a long history, going back to when it was licensed as W1XSL in 1936. It subsequently became W1XPW, W65H, WDRC-FM and WFMQ before arriving at WHCN in 1958. The call letters stood for "Hartford Concert Network." WHCN remained a Classical music station from that point until shifting to underground rock in 1969. The station was a runaway success when it broadcast from the transmitter shack on Meriden Mountain. It was the only radio station in the state to play uninterrupted rock. All music no talk. Very hip DJs. The commercials were cool too. Everybody listened. Not enough can be said about that time period. The format was flipped to main stream album rock in late 1976. Known as "106-WHCN", it was very successful in the 1970s and the 1980s. It was home to the morning show Picozzi and The Horn, up until the mid-1990s. Picozzi would later move across town to WCCC-FM. WHCN flipped to Classic rock in the mid-1990s to compete for the older rock audience that grew up with WHCN, but changing owners would signal changes at WHCN as well. It would become "105-9 WHCN" and adapt a harder-edged classic rock sound billed as "Classic Rock that really rocks!". WHCN would be snapped up by Liberty Broadcasting and then SFX Broadcasting/Capstar, then AMFM and then Clear Channel Communications in 2000.
Gone Troppo is the tenth studio album by George Harrison, recorded and released in 1982. It would prove to be Harrison's last studio album for five years, during which he largely took an extended hiatus from his recording career, with only the occasional soundtrack recording surfacing.
Background
By 1980, Harrison had been finding the current musical climate alienating. His commercial appeal had dwindled, with 1981's Somewhere in England failing to go gold (despite featuring the John Lennon tribute hit, "All Those Years Ago"). With one album left on his current recording contract, Harrison decided to get it over with and recorded Gone Troppo (an Australian slang expression meaning "gone mad/crazy") and released it without participating in any promotion.
Release
Gone Troppo was issued on Dark Horse Records in November 1982. The album's artwork was credited to "Legs" Larry Smith, formerly of Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. The album peaked at number 108 in the United States and failed to chart at all in the United Kingdom.
Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. The earliest evidence of Greek wine has been dated to 6,500 years ago where wine was produced on a household or communal basis. In ancient times, as trade in wine became extensive, it was transported from end to end of the Mediterranean; Greek wine had especially high prestige in Italy under the Roman Empire. In the medieval period, wines exported from Crete, Monemvasia and other Greek ports fetched high prices in northern Europe.
History
The origins of wine-making in Greece go back 6,500 years and evidence suggesting wine production confirm that Greece is home to the second oldest known grape wine remnants discovered in the world and the world’s earliest evidence of crushed grapes. The spread of Greekcivilization and their worship of Dionysus, the god of wine, spread Dionysian cults throughout the Mediterranean areas during the period of 1600 BC to the year 1.Hippocrates used wine for medicinal purposes and readily prescribed it. Greek wines and their varieties were well known and traded throughout the Mediterranean. The Ancient Greeks introduced vines such as Vitis vinifera and made wine in their numerous colonies in Italy,Sicily, southern France, and Spain. The Vitis vinifera grape which thrives in temperateclimates near coastal areas with mild winters and dry summers adapted well and flourished in the Northern Mediterranean areas. The most reputable wines of ancient Greece were Chian, Coan, Corcyraean, Cretan, Euboean, Lesbian, Leucadian, Mendaean, Peparethan wine, Rhodian and Thasian.Wine was also important for ancient Macedonia. Two other names may or may not be regional: Bibline wine and Pramnian wine are named in the earliest Greek poetry, but without any reliable geographical details.
The Battle of Greece (also known as Operation Marita, German:Unternehmen Marita) is the common name for the Axis invasion of AlliedGreece by Nazi Germany in April 1941. It is concomitant to the stalled Fascist Italian invasion known as the Greco-Italian War. It is usually distinguished from the Battle of Crete, which came after mainland Greece had been subdued. These Axis operations were part of the greater Balkan Campaign of Germany in World War II.

In the Greek mythology as well as in Dantes Divine comedy it is one of the five rivers of the Underworld, in the the others , Styx, Kokytos, Phlegethon and Lethe open up. In addition to the Styx, it is considered the flow of the dead over which Charon with his ferry the dead souls in the Hades brought. In Platons Phaidon describes the dead who "made a mediocre change" and reach a lake via the Acheron, where they clean themselves and lose their misconduct before they are born again. Occasionally Acheron is also used as a synonym for the Hades itself. According to legend, at its mouth stood in Dead oracle.
Acheron is in mythology Okeanide, one of the three thousand sons and daughters of the Okeanos and the Tethys. Together with the. Nymph Orphne (or. Gorgyra) he fathered Askalaphos.

Some braved the freezing waters of the Evros River, including a man swimming back to the Turkish side after having been stuck overnight with a group of people in the no man's land of a river island between the Greek and Turkish border.
The United Nations said Sunday that at least 13,000 people were massed on the Turkish land border with Greece, after Turkey officially declared its western borders were open to migrants and refugees hoping to head into the European Union.
Turkey's decision to open the borders with Greece came amid a military escalation in Syria's northwest that has led to growing direct clashes between Turkish and Syrian forces.
Greek authorities fired tear gas and stun grenades through Saturday to prevent repeated attempts by a crowd of more than 4,000 people massed at the border crossing in Kastanies to cross.
Others were making the short but often perilous sea crossing from the Turkish coast to the Greek islands.
At least three dinghies carrying migrants arrived on the Greek island of Lesbos Sunday morning.
Initial figures collected by Greece's Merchant Marine Ministry from the coast guard on eastern Aegean islands showed a clear increase in the number of people arriving by dinghies from the nearby Turkish coast.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleman Soylu tweeted that 76,385 refugees had left Turkey via Edirne, the province bordering Greece and Bulgaria as of Sunday morning.
But there was no evidence to support his claim. Greece has shut its border, and there were a few dozen arrests of people who managed to cross through the border, Greek authorities have said.

Why is the border between Turkey and Greece a river of death? The border between Greece and Turkey is a focal point. The river Evros is a death zone. The river has become a death river because of the many refugees who want to flee from Turkey to Greece. What is happening on the border between Greece and Turkey? A documentary about a border region that has turned into a death zone.
Dutch journalist Bram Vermeulen travels in four episodes along the Turkish border, where new power relations are being established around the Mediterranean. New orientations and developments are taking place, with enormous consequences for the people who live there. Vermeulen travels to the border areas of Greece, Cyprus, Syria and Iraq in search of the real borders with their neighbours. Four borders, four stories about life on both sides of the border. In this episode our journalist travels to the border between Greece and Turkey.
The border between Greece and Turkey is not only the border between two countries. It marks the division between rich Europe and a world of poverty, war and violence. No wonder that this is the gateway to paradise for many migrants. The border is literally and figuratively fluid, because hundreds of people die every year in the river that separates Turkey from Greece. They try to reach Europe, paradise.
The inhabitants of the border region are watching the flow of refugees. It reminds them of their own history. When the Ottoman Empire disintegrated after the First World War, the Greeks and Turks who lived on the wrong side of the new border were simply expelled. For them too, the border had become an insurmountable barrier. The border police did everything possible to stop the flow of refugees, and with European money a fence was erected at the border. The Turks, who are still not allowed to belong to the European Union, are to act as gatekeepers on their side. And the refugees? They will continue to try to make their dream - to reach Europe - come true. No fence will ever be high enough to nip the hope of a better life in the bud.

(1 Mar 2020) People continued to try and cross from Turkey into Greece on Sunday, after Turkey declared its western borders were open to migrants hoping to head into the European Union.

(1 Mar 2020) Migrants continued crossing the Evros river from Turkey to Greece on Sunday, after Turkey officially declared its western borders were open to people hoping to head into the European Union.
Some migrants used dinghies, and clambered up the steep forested river bank on the Greek side after disembarking.
Others travelled in motorized canoes.
The United Nations said Sunday that at least 13,000 people were massed on the Turkish land border with Greece.
Athens has said no one will be allowed to enter illegally and has bolstered security along its border.
Ankara's decision to let migrants head for Greece came amid a military escalation in Syria's northwest that has led to growing clashes between Turkish and Russian-backed Syrian government forces.

The springs of the Acheron River are situated in an area of breathtaking natural beauty. The river is located 25km from Parga and 44km from Preveza, in Greece. The surrounding area has lush vegetation and crystal-clear waters, creating a stunning and unparalleled landscape. The river springs from the area known as the village Glykí at an altitude of 1.600 metres in the mountains of Soúli and discharges in Ammoudiá on the Ionian coast. The Acheron River is a protected ecosystem recognized by the Natura 2000 Network. In ancient Greek mythology, the river was known as the "river of pain" and was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. It was believed that the souls of the dead were transported across the river towards the god of the underworld, Hades. According to legend, the goddess Thetis bathed her son Achilles in this river, holding him by the heel and giving him immortality.
Nowadays, the Acheron River is a famous tourist attraction where visitors can participate in various activities such as rafting, canoeing, mountain biking, and fishing. It is also a perfect place for nature enthusiasts to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Along the river, there are several restaurants and cafes for refreshments.
One of the popular destinations near the Acheron River is the Nekromanteion, an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the god of the underworld, Hades. The sanctuary communicated with the dead souls, and visitors could explore the crypts and underground corridors leading to the underworld. It is an exciting and unique experience for those interested in mythology and ancient history.
