In 1947, the Muroc Army Air Field in California has test pilots fly high-speed aircraft such as the rocket-powered Bell X-1, but they die as a result. After another pilot, Slick Goodlin, demands $150,000 to attempt to break the sound barrier, war hero Captain Chuck Yeager receives the chance to fly the X-1. While on a horseback ride with his wife Glennis, Yeager collides with a tree branch and breaks his ribs, which inhibits him from leaning over and locking the door to the X-1. Worried that he might not fly the mission, Yeager confides in friend and fellow pilot Jack Ridley. Ridley cuts off part of a broomstick and tells Yeager to use it as a lever to help seal the hatch to the X-1, and Yeager becomes the first man to fly at supersonic speed, defeating the "demon in the sky".
"The Right Stuff" is the second episode of the fourth season of House and the seventy-second episode overall.
Plot
A pilot, Captain Greta Cooper (played by Essence Atkins), is flying in on a United States Air Force mission when she sees lightning and the landscape suddenly turns into strange colors on her. It turns out she is in a simulator and complains to the designer after crashing it.
Cuddy tells House he will have to narrow down his forty applicants, so he immediately fires an entire row. Cooper pages House and offers him $50,000 to secretly cure her problem, which she describes as seeing sounds (synesthesia). She wants to keep it off the books so NASA does not find out and disqualify her as an astronaut applicant. House is intrigued and agrees, and has her present her symptoms to his applicants. He then splits them up to run various tests — and wash his car. While talking to his applicants in his office, House thinks he sees Chase walking past the doorway. House orders Cooper into a hyperbaric chamber where Applicants 6, 18, and 24 attempt to flush out excess oxygen, but she collapses with a heart attack. They try to defibrillate, but it starts a fire in the oxygen chamber, setting off the sprinklers.
"The Right Stuff" is a song by Bryan Ferry, the former lead vocalist for Roxy Music. It was released as the first single from his seventh album Bête Noire in late 1987, being Ferry's twenty-fifth single. It was the album's only Top 40 hit in the U.K., peaking at No. 37.
Background
The song was co-written by Johnny Marr and adapted from The Smiths' instrumental B-side to "Bigmouth Strikes Again" ("Money Changes Everything"). When Marr was asked about the collaboration in an 1989 interview with Sonics he said "He [Ferry] didn’t know who I was. But he was looking for co-writers and someone suggested me to him. Someone played him some Smiths records and he went 'Oh, this guy plays guitar all right!' So he invited me down to the studio. Bryan Ferry was an old hero of mine and it was great to work with him, but the end result was…he’s a bit blow-waved."Guy Pratt, who played bass with Ferry during this period tells it differently in his book. Ferry heard "Money Changes Everything" and had the genius idea of putting vocals on it to have a hit. Their then guitar player Chester, "could play the intro, but couldn't play it" and so Ferry enlisted Johnny Marr himself to play on the track.

Chuck Yeager & the F-104
This clip is from the 1983 film "The Right Stuff" with Sam Shepard as test pilot Chuck Yeager. The only realistic part of this scene is that Yeager was running an altitude test when his F-104 destabilized and subsequently crashed. However, this is a great scene (edited) from a ridiculously fun movie. Enjoy!

The story contrasts the "Mercury Seven" and their families with pilots like Chuck Yeager. While never selected as an astronaut, Yeager was considered by many test pilots to be the best of them all. The Mercury Seven were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton.
