This is Susan Sontag's documentary about Israel, shot during the Yom Kippur war. Much of it is strictly observational, though there are some effectively didactic juxtapositions -- and several talking heads from across the Israeli political spectrum. Some might object that the Palestinians, whose fate is discussed in terms both cynical and sympathetic, don't have their own voice in the film, but the limits of the films can also be said to give it a formal coherence. Those who know Sontag's work in general will find her usual searching intelligence, compassion, and fearlessness here.

In 18th century Denmark, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) – a proud, ambitious, but impoverished war hero -- sets out to tame a vast, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who realizes the threat Kahlen represents to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands, Kahlen is joined by a couple who have fled the clutches of the rapacious De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, De Schinkel swears vengeance, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as these two men.

Polish film director Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016), whose début films portrayed the horror of the German occupation of Poland, won awards at Cannes which established his reputation as storyteller and commentator on Polish history. He also served on the national Senate from 1989-91. [Listener: Jacek Petrycki]
TRANSCRIPT: Unfortunately, I have to say that this film didn't spread its wings the way it could have done. I had hoped very much that finally, I'd made an American film, one that I could have taken to America and shown in the style of American cinema, where everything in the film was understandable. Because it was set in the world that America knows and understands well. Unfortunately, it turned out that the Paris-based 'Le Monde' had written a scathing review of this film branding it as anti-Semitic. This review reached America in no time. In America, I tried to find out what exactly was anti-Semitic about the film. It turned out that no one was even trying to go into any details. The film had been bought by a distributor so that it would never be shown. I met this distributor and put a question to him, 'If you consider that there are parts to this film that you don't want to show in the States, then please tell me what they are and I'll cut them out myself and put my name to this.' He began to talk some nonsense about not liking the scene where Miller, this wealthy man, is in his palace wearing slippers. He was talking rubbish. I said, 'Fine but he's not Jewish, he's German. So you want me to cut the Germans out of this film?' I realised that this wasn't the issue at all. All he knew was that he was meant to buy 'The Promised Land' so that the film would never be shown on screen in the USA. And that's what he did. Similarly, I didn't get the chance to be taken into consideration among the other films that were being put forward for the Oscar nominations. We went to Hollywood, but I could see there was a definite opposition to this film. It had been decided that this was an anti-Semitic film, and I had no chance. This was also the reason why the film wasn't seen much in other European countries. And so the cinema which gave me the chance to finally turn away from national problems in my films, from the mystery, so to speak, of Polishness in 'The Wedding' or the difficulty of understanding the situation in 'Kanał' or 'Ashes and Diamonds', finally I was making a film about money, something that everyone understands very well, and yet I'd hit an impenetrable wall. This film was well received over here and passed successfully through the countries that had formerly been dependent on the Soviet Union, because here the formula that had been determined in Paris wasn't an issue. And so the film didn't reach its distributors and therefore passed by unnoticed.

He began to talk some nonsense about not liking the scene where Miller, this wealthy man, is in his palace wearing slippers.
