Motte-and-bailey castle
A motte-and-bailey castle is a fortification with a wooden or stone keep situated on a raised earthwork called a motte, accompanied by an enclosed courtyard, or bailey, surrounded by a protective ditch and palisade. Relatively easy to build with unskilled, often forced, labour, but still militarily formidable, these castles were built across northern Europe from the 10th century onwards, spreading from Normandy and Anjou in France, into the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century. The Normans introduced the design into England and Wales following their invasion in 1066. Motte-and-bailey castles were adopted in Scotland, Ireland, the Low Countries and Denmark in the 12th and 13th centuries. By the end of the 13th century, the design was largely superseded by alternative forms of fortification, but the earthworks remain a prominent feature in many countries.

A motte-and-bailey castle was made up of two structures, a motte, a type of mound–often artificial–topped with a wooden or stone structure known as a keep; and at least one bailey, a fortified enclosure built next to the motte. The term "motte and bailey" is a relatively modern one, and is not medieval in origin. The word "motte" is the French version of the Latin mota, and in France the word motte was initially an early word for a turf; it then became used to refer to a turf bank, and by the 12th century was used to refer to the castle design itself. The word "bailey" comes from the Norman-French baille, or basse-cour, referring to a low yard. In medieval sources, the Latin term castellum was used to describe the bailey complex within these castles.

Leonard Bailey (inventor)
Leonard Bailey (1825-05-08 in Hollis, New Hampshire – 1905-02-05 in New York City) was a toolmaker/inventor from Massachusetts, USA, who in the mid-to-late nineteenth century patented several features of woodworking equipment. Most prominent of those patents were the planes manufactured by the Stanley Rule & Level Co. (now Stanley Works) of New Britain, Connecticut.
Commonly known as Stanley/Bailey planes, these planes were prized by woodworkers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and remain popular by today's wood craftsman. A type study of his patented planes and the rest of the Stanley line may be found at Patrick Leach's "Blood and Gore".
Bailey's design ideas are still utilized by Stanley and other plane manufacturers to this day.

Ward (castle)
In fortifications, a bailey or ward refers to a courtyard enclosed by a curtain wall. In particular, an early type of European castle was known as a Motte-and-bailey. Castles can have more than one ward. Their layout depends both on the local topography and the level of fortification technology employed, ranging from simple enclosures to elaborate concentric defences. In addition to the gradual evolution of more complex castle plans, there are also significant differences in regional traditions of military architecture regarding the subdivision into wards.
Upper, lower, inner and outer wards or baileys
Wards can be arranged in sequence along a hill (as in a spur castle), giving an upper ward and lower ward. They can also be nested one inside the other, as in a concentric castle, giving an outer ward and inner ward. On the other hand, Tower houses lack an enclosed ward.
The most important and prestigious buildings, such as the great hall and the keep or bergfried, were usually located in the inner ward of the castle. Nonetheless, there are a few castles where the keep is outside the inner ward, such as Château de Dourdan and Flint Castle. Lower or outer wards often held less important structures, such as stables, if there was not enough space in the inner ward. Outer wards could also be largely defensive in function, without significant buildings. In the concentric castles of the military orders, such as Krak des Chevaliers or Belvoir, the inner ward resembled a cloistered monastery, while the outer ward was little more than a narrow passage between the concentric enceintes. In general, wards could have any shape, including irregular or elongated ones, when the walls followed the contour lines of the terrain where the castle was sited. Rectangular shapes are very common (as in castra and quadrangular castles).

Castle
A castle (from Latin: castellum) is a type of fortified structure built in Europe and the Middle East during the Middle Ages by nobility. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble. This is distinct from a palace, which is not fortified; from a fortress, which was not always a residence for nobility; and from a fortified settlement, which was a public defence – though there are many similarities among these types of construction. Usage of the term has varied over time and has been applied to structures as diverse as hill forts and country houses. Over the approximately 900 years that castles were built, they took on a great many forms with many different features, although some, such as curtain walls and arrowslits, were commonplace.
A European innovation, castles originated in the 9th and 10th centuries, after the fall of the Carolingian Empire resulted in its territory being divided among individual lords and princes. These nobles built castles to control the area immediately surrounding them, and were both offensive and defensive structures; they provided a base from which raids could be launched as well as protection from enemies. Although their military origins are often emphasised in castle studies, the structures also served as centres of administration and symbols of power. Urban castles were used to control the local populace and important travel routes, and rural castles were often situated near features that were integral to life in the community, such as mills and fertile land.

Castles (video game)
Castles is a video game developed by Quicksilver and published by Interplay Entertainment in 1991 and 1992. The game involves the construction of a series of castles in Wales and the Welsh Marches during the 13th century. Castles was quickly followed by an expansion, Castles: The Northern Campaign, and a sequel, Castles II: Siege and Conquest.
Gameplay
The game combines several genres of gameplay including resource management, a text-based multiple-choice storyline and a simple combat mode.
In Castles, the player constructs up to eight castles, one after the other, in various regions in western England and Wales. Each scenario starts in the castle building mode with a flat, empty map of the region. The map has such features as trees and water, but is largely devoid of manageable terrain.
On this map the player designs the outline of a castle, including a gatehouse, walls, and round or square towers. Each piece of the castle can be customized for either height, thickness, or both, and most can be further outfitted with defensive features. Wall defenses feature cauldrons of boiling oil and towers include arrow slits. The player has to consider the amount of available resources in the region when designing the castle, as larger or numerous pieces can easily deplete resources and result in the inability to complete the castle.

Castles II: Siege and Conquest
Castles II: Siege and Conquest is a strategy video game developed for the Macintosh, Amiga and DOS by Interplay Entertainment in 1992, designed and developed by Quicksilver Software; the Macintosh version of the game was published by Interplay Entertainment under the MacPlay brand name. Castles II is the sequel to the 1991 game Castles.
Story
The player takes the role of one of five different nobles (Albion, Duke of Valois, Anjou, Aragon, or Burgundy), fighting for the title of King of Bretagne. In addition, three territories are controlled by the Pope.
Gameplay
Gameplay includes scouting out unknown territories, conquering them, building castles to prevent revolts and line defenses, raising an army, feeding and paying them, and eventually making a claim for the title of King. Depending on how strong the human player or the other four AI-engined nobles are, the Pope will decide whether or not to endorse the claim. Therefore, attacking someone that claims the title can prevent them from getting it. Using diplomacy also allows the player to maintain high relationships with the other nobles and with the Pope, a useful feature to protect from attack. Alternately, the player can conquer everyone and even the Pope to win by default (in which case the anti-Pope will also endorse the player's claim to the throne).

Following the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror needed to control his population. People across England were angry with the fact a man from France was ruling over them, and the threat of rebellion was real. Because of this he made a number of changes to impose his rule onto people, and one of the biggest changes was that he brought the first castles to England. Before his, the only sort of fortified settlement was known as a Burh, but William I brought Motte and Bailey Castles to England. In this episode Sally shows Fatima and Harry the main features of a castle. It is a stimulus for a range of activities, in particular for showing changes beyond living memory ('What was life like for people who lived in castles?')
During the animation the characters explore a number of castles - including Warwick Castle and Edinburgh Castle - which is useful for schools in these regions wanting to teach ‘significant places in their locality’.
The castle features that Sally shows Fatima and Harry include:
- the significance of location (eg on top of a hill)
- external features - such as towers battlements, thick walls, a moat, a drawbridge, etc
- internal features - such as a well, large stores to guard against siege, a hall for everyone to socialise.
This film is relevant for teaching History at KS1 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 1st Level in Scotland.

Following the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror needed to control his population. People across England were angry with the fact a man from France was ruling over them, and the threat of rebellion was real. Because of this he made a number of changes to impose his rule onto people, and one of the biggest changes was that he brought the first castles to England. Before his, the only sort of fortified settlement was known as a Burh, but William I brought Motte and Bailey Castles to England.
These were huge wooden structures in which soldiers would be garrisoned in to bring about an end of any possible rebellion. They were made strictly from wood, and consisted of a bailey where the soldiers lived and also a motte, a huge hill on top of which sat a keep, or a traditional castle. These castles had many positives as they were quick to build, but they were also weak as they could be set fire to rather easily.

Today we perceive castles to be huge stone fortifications that were created for defence. These are known as stone keep castles, but what was used before this? Today we look at the Motte and Bailey Castle, a prominent castle built across Medieval Europe, and in particular was built in the 11th century in England. William the Conqueror following the Battle of Hastings needed to suppress England, so to do this he built and garrisoned Motte and Bailey castles all over the country. The main aim of doing this was to intimidate and scare the English into thinking twice about revolting.
In this video, we look at the different features including, The Keep, The Motte, Palisades, The Bailey, Ditches and Moats and more. Featuring footage from some of Britain's most well known and forgotten castles too. (Sadly no Motte and Bailey castles stand today, as they were replaced by Stone Keep castles in England after a few centuries)

In this episode Sally shows Fatima and Harry the main features of a castle. It is a stimulus for a range of activities, in particular for showing changes beyond living memory ('What was life like for people who lived in castles?')
During the animation the characters explore a number of castles - including Warwick Castle and Edinburgh Castle - which is useful for schools in these regions wanting to teach ‘significant places in their locality’.
The castle features that Sally shows Fatima and Harry include:
- the significance of location (eg on top of a hill)
- external features - such as towers battlements, thick walls, a moat, a drawbridge, etc
- internal features - such as a well, large stores to guard against siege, a hall for everyone to socialise.
This film is relevant for teaching History at KS1 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 1st Level in Scotland.

Following the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William the Conqueror needed to control his population. People across England were angry with the fact a man from France was ruling over them, and the threat of rebellion was real. Because of this he made a number of changes to impose his rule onto people, and one of the biggest changes was that he brought the first castles to England. Before his, the only sort of fortified settlement was known as a Burh, but William I brought Motte and Bailey Castles to England.
These were huge wooden structures in which soldiers would be garrisoned in to bring about an end of any possible rebellion. They were made strictly from wood, and consisted of a bailey where the soldiers lived and also a motte, a huge hill on top of which sat a keep, or a traditional castle. These castles had many positives as they were quick to build, but they were also weak as they could be set fire to rather easily.

Motte-and-bailey castle
A motte-and-bailey castle is a fortification with a wooden or stone keep situated on a raised earthwork called a motte, accompanied by an enclosed courtyard, or bailey, surrounded by a protective ditch and palisade. Relatively easy to build with unskilled, often forced, labour, but still militarily formidable, these castles were built across northern Europe from the 10th century onwards, spreading from Normandy and Anjou in France, into the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century. The Normans introduced the design into England and Wales following their invasion in 1066. Motte-and-bailey castles were adopted in Scotland, Ireland, the Low Countries and Denmark in the 12th and 13th centuries. By the end of the 13th century, the design was largely superseded by alternative forms of fortification, but the earthworks remain a prominent feature in many countries.

A motte-and-bailey castle was made up of two structures, a motte, a type of mound–often artificial–topped with a wooden or stone structure known as a keep; and at least one bailey, a fortified enclosure built next to the motte. The term "motte and bailey" is a relatively modern one, and is not medieval in origin. The word "motte" is the French version of the Latin mota, and in France the word motte was initially an early word for a turf; it then became used to refer to a turf bank, and by the 12th century was used to refer to the castle design itself. The word "bailey" comes from the Norman-French baille, or basse-cour, referring to a low yard. In medieval sources, the Latin term castellum was used to describe the bailey complex within these castles.

Leonard Bailey (1825-05-08 in Hollis, New Hampshire – 1905-02-05 in New York City) was a toolmaker/cabinet maker from Massachusetts, United States, who in the mid-to-late nineteenth century patented several features of woodworking equipment. Most prominent of those patents were the planes manufactured by the Stanley Rule & Level Co. (now Stanley Black & Decker) of New Britain, Connecticut.Commonly known as Stanley/Bailey planes, these planes were prized by woodworkers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and remain popular by today's wood craftsman. A type study of his patented planes and the rest of the Stanley line may be found at Patrick Leach's "Blood and Gore".Bailey's design ideas are still utilized by Stanley and other plane manufacturers to this day.

The design was later adopted by the U.S. Army Medical Board which provided funding for Bailey's business ventures and future inventions.
