The Pit (Belarusian: Π―ΠΌΠ°) is a monument on the corner of Melnikayte and Zaslavskaya streets devoted to the victims of the Holocaust in Minsk, Belarus. It is on the site where, on March 2, 1942, the Nazi forces shot about 5000 prisoners of the nearby Minsk Ghetto.
The obelisk was created in 1947 and in 2000 a bronze sculpture entitled "The Last Way" was added. It represents a group of doomed martyrs, walking down the steps of the pit. The sculpture was created by Belarusian artist, Chairman of the Jewish communities of Belarus, Leonid Levin and sculptor from Israel Elsa Pollak. On the obelisk is written in Russian and Yiddish "The bright memory of five times the light of thousands of Jews who perished at the hands of sworn enemies of humanity - German-fascist monsters"
When reconstruction of the memorial was undertaken no machinery was used and all work done by hand, a process which took eight years to complete. According to the original plan for the group sculpture it was to be more detailed but eventually was left with an expressive aesthetic, devoid of national colors, and includes figures of a violinist, children, and a pregnant woman who represent more collective characters. The memorial has been a target for vandalism. Every year on March 2 in Memorial funeral memorial rallies occur.

The Pit: A Group Encounter Defiled
The Pit: A Group Encounter Defiled is a non-fiction book on Mind Dynamics, Leadership Dynamics, and Holiday Magic, written by Gene Church and Conrad D. Carnes. The book was published Outerbridge & Lazard, Inc., in 1972, and was republished in a paperback edition in 1973, by Pocket Books. The book was later the basis for the 1983 film, Circle of Power. The title refers to the encounter group movement that was prevalent at the time, which evolved into what psychologists began to term Large Group Awareness Training.
The Pit: A Group Encounter Defiled is listed in the 1987 edition of Best Sellers, at the University of Scranton archives. The book was featured in The New York Review of Books, in 1973.
Authors
Gene Church had previously studied psychology at Ohio State University and Ohio University. He had enrolled in the Leadership Dynamics coursework as a requirement of his association with Holiday Magic. At the time of the book's publication, Conrad D. Carnes was an attorney practicing law with the firm of Carnes & Hornbeck in Columbus, Ohio.

The Pit (G.I. Joe)
The Pit is the fictional headquarters of the specialist G.I. Joe team from the 1980s Marvel comic book created by Larry Hama. It is a multi-level underground base complete with training facilities, living quarters, a briefing room, and heavy equipment storage.
Three versions of the Pit have been presented as existing within the comic books.
The Pit (or Pit I)
The original Pit was secretly located underneath the Chaplains Assistant School's motor pool at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, New York. Most of the characters in the school, with the exception of members of the G.I. Joe team, had no idea of the Pit's existence.
According to a blueprint provided in the comic book (issue #1 of the series as published by Marvel Comics), the original incarnation of the base is five levels deep. The first level houses heavy vehicles and weapons, with the second level containing electronic communications and briefing rooms. The training area is situated upon the third level, complete with swimming pool, whilst the fourth level contains an armory and living quarters. The fifth level houses computers and generators and is where classified documents are located.

Pretoria pit memorial walk
Pretoria pit memorial walk. In the video the walk starts from the Pretoria memorial just off Broadway, walking on the public footpaths to the pit ruins and onto the capped shaft 4. which is also public access. The video is filmed in real time so the walk will take 45 minutes to 1-hour. I have filmed 20 minutes of the walk, including the lake and ruins. It was very wet underfoot, as you will see and hear in the video. I haven't narrated the video, as I wanted it to be natural, so people that can't access to the area can enjoy the walk, as if they where there. All the paths I walked, and the Pretoria pit ruins are all public access. They were donated by the Hulton family to the public and managed by Bolton council. In November 1941 a second ghetto was established in Minsk for Jews deported from the West, known as Ghetto Hamburg, which adjoined the main Minsk ghetto.[2] Above the entrance to this separate ghetto was a sign: Sonderghetto (Special Ghetto). Every night the Gestapo would murder 70-80 of the new arrivals. This ghetto was divided into five sections, according to the places from which they came: Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin, the Rhineland, Bremen and Vienna.[2] Most of the Jews in this ghetto were from Germany and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; at its height it had about 35,000 inhabitants.[1][1][2][3] Little contact was permitted between the inhabitants of the two ghettos.[1][1][2][3]
As in many other ghettos, Jews were forced to work in factories or other German-run operations.[3] Ghetto inhabitants lived in extremely poor conditions, with insufficient stocks of food and medical supplies.[2]
In March 1942 approximately 5,000 Jews were killed nearby where "The Pit" memorial to the Minsk ghetto now stands. By August fewer than 9,000 Jews were left in the ghetto according to German official documents.[2] The ghetto was liquidated on 21 October 1943,[2] with many Minsk Jews perishing in the Sobibor extermination camp.[3] Several thousands were massacred at Maly Trostenets extermination camp (before the war, Maly Trostenets was a village a few miles to the east of Minsk).[3] By the time the Red Army retook the city on 3 July 1944, there were only a few Jewish survivors

Pretoria pit memorial walk.
In the video the walk starts from the Pretoria memorial just off Broadway, walking on the public footpaths to the pit ruins and onto the capped shaft 4. which is also public access.
The video is filmed in real time so the walk will take 45 minutes to 1-hour. I have filmed 20 minutes of the walk, including the lake and ruins.
It was very wet underfoot, as you will see and hear in the video. I haven't narrated the video, as I wanted it to be natural, so people that can't access to the area can enjoy the walk, as if they where there.
All the paths I walked, and the Pretoria pit ruins are all public access. They were donated by the Hulton family to the public and managed by Bolton council.
All other areas away from the public footpaths are owned by Peel Holdings, this is private land.
There are many more public walks on the Hulton estate, which I hope to film in the future.

Another race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was decided by pit strategy on a long run as a tough competitor broke a dry spell. Johnny Wood Jr. took his third win of the season and the points lead after getting the strategy right beating out Barrett Flowe and Austin Call of the top step of the podium. With the win, Wood now holds a 19 point lead over Maxwell Caldwell with just two races to go in the season. Tonight's penultimate round being a tribute to a friend as we run the Tony Trepasso Memorial 500 at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.

The Soviet census of 1926 showed 53,700 Jews living in Minsk (constituting close to 41% of the city's inhabitants).[2]
The ghetto was created soon after the German invasion of the Soviet Union and capture of the city of Minsk, capital of the Belorussian SSR, on 28 June 1941.[2] On the fifth day after the occupation, 2,000 Jewish intelligentsia were massacred by the Germans; from then on, murders of Jews became a common occurrence.[2] About 20,000 Jews were murdered within the first few months of the German occupation, mostly by the Einsatzgruppen squads.[1]
On 17 July 1941 the German occupational authority, the Reichskommissariat Ostland, was created. On the 20th, the Minsk Ghetto was established.[3] A Jewish Council (Judenrat) was established as well.[2] The total population of the ghetto was about 80,000 (over 100,000 according to some sources), of which about 50,000 were pre-war inhabitants, the remainder (30,000 or more), refugees and Jews were forcibly resettled by the Germans from nearby settlements.[1][2][3]

In November 1941 a second ghetto was established in Minsk for Jews deported from the West, known as Ghetto Hamburg, which adjoined the main Minsk ghetto.[2] Above the entrance to this separate ghetto was a sign: Sonderghetto (Special Ghetto). Every night the Gestapo would murder 70-80 of the new arrivals. This ghetto was divided into five sections, according to the places from which they came: Hamburg, Frankfurt, Berlin, the Rhineland, Bremen and Vienna.[2] Most of the Jews in this ghetto were from Germany and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; at its height it had about 35,000 inhabitants.[1][1][2][3] Little contact was permitted between the inhabitants of the two ghettos.[1][1][2][3]
As in many other ghettos, Jews were forced to work in factories or other German-run operations.[3] Ghetto inhabitants lived in extremely poor conditions, with insufficient stocks of food and medical supplies.[2]
In March 1942 approximately 5,000 Jews were killed nearby where "The Pit" memorial to the Minsk ghetto now stands. By August fewer than 9,000 Jews were left in the ghetto according to German official documents.[2] The ghetto was liquidated on 21 October 1943,[2] with many Minsk Jews perishing in the Sobibor extermination camp.[3] Several thousands were massacred at Maly Trostenets extermination camp (before the war, Maly Trostenets was a village a few miles to the east of Minsk).[3] By the time the Red Army retook the city on 3 July 1944, there were only a few Jewish survivors

Pretoria pit memorial walk.
In the video the walk starts from the Pretoria memorial just off Broadway, walking on the public footpaths to the pit ruins and onto the capped shaft 4. which is also public access.
The video is filmed in real time so the walk will take 45 minutes to 1-hour. I have filmed 20 minutes of the walk, including the lake and ruins.
It was very wet underfoot, as you will see and hear in the video. I haven't narrated the video, as I wanted it to be natural, so people that can't access to the area can enjoy the walk, as if they where there.
All the paths I walked, and the Pretoria pit ruins are all public access. They were donated by the Hulton family to the public and managed by Bolton council.
All other areas away from the public footpaths are owned by Peel Holdings, this is private land.
There are many more public walks on the Hulton estate, which I hope to film in the future.

Another race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was decided by pit strategy on a long run as a tough competitor broke a dry spell. Johnny Wood Jr. took his third win of the season and the points lead after getting the strategy right beating out Barrett Flowe and Austin Call of the top step of the podium. With the win, Wood now holds a 19 point lead over Maxwell Caldwell with just two races to go in the season. Tonight's penultimate round being a tribute to a friend as we run the Tony Trepasso Memorial 500 at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee.

The Pit (Belarusian: Π―ΠΌΠ°) is a monument on the corner of Melnikayte and Zaslavskaya streets devoted to the victims of the Holocaust in Minsk, Belarus. It is on the site where, on March 2, 1942, the Nazi forces shot about 5000 prisoners of the nearby Minsk Ghetto.
The obelisk was created in 1947 and in 2000 a bronze sculpture entitled "The Last Way" was added. It represents a group of doomed martyrs, walking down the steps of the pit. The sculpture was created by Belarusian artist, Chairman of the Jewish communities of Belarus, Leonid Levin and sculptor from Israel Elsa Pollak. On the obelisk is written in Russian and Yiddish "The bright memory of five times the light of thousands of Jews who perished at the hands of sworn enemies of humanity - German-fascist monsters"
When reconstruction of the memorial was undertaken no machinery was used and all work done by hand, a process which took eight years to complete. According to the original plan for the group sculpture it was to be more detailed but eventually was left with an expressive aesthetic, devoid of national colors, and includes figures of a violinist, children, and a pregnant woman who represent more collective characters. The memorial has been a target for vandalism. Every year on March 2 in Memorial funeral memorial rallies occur.
