The Ravens were an AmericanR&Bvocalgroup, formed in 1946 by Jimmy Ricks and Warren Suttles. They were one of the most successful and most influential vocal quartets of the period, and had several hits on the R&B chart in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Career
Jimmy "Ricky" Ricks was born in Adrian, Georgia, later moving to Jacksonville, Florida. During World War II, he moved to New York City, where he worked as a waiter in Harlem and met Warren "Birdland" Suttles, from Fairfield, Alabama. In early 1946, they decided to form a vocal group and recruited Leonard "Zeke" Puzey, who had recently won a talent contest at the Apollo Theater, and Henry Oliver "Ollie" Jones. They found a manager, Ben Bart, and an accompanist, Howard Biggs, and made their first recordings for Bart's small Hub record label. They called themselves the Ravens, and so initiated the trend for vocal groups to name themselves after birds - groups who later followed included The Orioles, The Crows, The Larks, The Robins and The Penguins. Although the group were strongly influenced by The Ink Spots, The Delta Rhythm Boys and The Mills Brothers, they used Ricks' bass voice, rather than a more conventional tenor, as the lead on many of their recordings, and this became their trademark style. Their material was also more varied, including elements of pop, jazz, R&B, and gospel styles.
North Star is the prominent star that lies closest in the sky to the north celestial pole, and which appears (approximately) directly overhead to an observer at the Earth's North Pole.
The film is about the resistance of Ukrainian villagers, through guerrilla tactics, against the German invaders of the Ukrainian SSR. The film was an unabashedly pro-Sovietpropaganda film at the height of the war.
In the 1950s it was criticised for this reason and it was recut to remove the idealized portrayal of Soviet collective farms at the beginning and to include references to the Hungarian Uprising of 1956.
Plot
In June 1941 Ukrainian villagers are living in peace. As the school year ends, a group of friends decide to travel to Kiev for a holiday. To their horror, they find themselves attacked by German aircraft, part of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. Eventually their village itself is occupied by the Nazis. Meanwhile, men and women take to the hills to form partisan militias.
On a ship in the 1930s sailing from Alexandria to Marseille, Édouard Binet, a French adventurer, meets Nemrod Loktum, a shady Egyptian businessman, and Sylvie Baron, a Belgian exotic dancer. Nemrod takes the Étoile du Nord train to Brussels, on which he is robbed and killed. Édouard then takes a room at the boarding house in Charleroi of Madame Baron, Sylvie’s mother, with bloodstained clothes and a lot of money that he hides. Despite the suspicions of her younger daughter Antoinette and the other lodgers, the frosty Madame Baron is gradually charmed by the suave Frenchman and believes his stories. The police learn of his presence and, after trial, he is sent to the infamous Île de Ré for transportation to the penal colonies. Madame Baron is among the grieving relatives who wave goodbye.
The North Star Grassman and the Ravens is a 1971 album by Englishfolk rock singer-songwriter Sandy Denny. Built mostly around her own compositions, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens is distinguished by its elusive lyrics and unexpected harmonies.
Chronology
Denny became a solo artist because her previous group Fotheringay dissolved when producer Joe Boyd left to take up a job with Warner Brothers in California when the band were halfway through a second album that was left unfinished until 2008 when it came out as Fotheringay 2. Denny then launched the sequence of solo albums that underlie the claim that she is one of Britain's finest recent singer-songwriters.
Production
Two original compositions from the Fotheringay 2 sessions, "Late November", inspired by a dream and the death of Fairport band member Martin Lamble, and "John the Gun" were re-worked for the album and supplemented by a further six self penned songs and two cover versions, Bob Dylan's "Down in the Flood" and "Let's Jump the Broomstick", recorded by Brenda Lee. Sessions began with Andy Johns producing but in the end the album was produced by Denny herself, current bandmate Richard Thompson and John Wood, who recommended to Denny the film-score arranger Harry Robinson, who added strings to "Next Time Around", a cryptogram about former boyfriend Jackson C. Frank (one of her many portraits in song) and "Wretched Wilbur". Robinson would arrange strings for Denny's further albums as well as for Nick Drake and other artists signed to the same company.

The Ravens Only ashes and bones remain My hair is wet, my eyes are sore The past has been fed to the flames I cannot breathe anymore I try to stand on my feet, but I fall I try to walk, but I crawl Life -- as we knew it, is over And you are gone Forever gone... I will not bend to a cross I will not kneel at your feet Greed and anger Made us younger Couldn't save us when the tower fell All my strength and all my hunger All is lost And none will live to tell I rest in the ruins of days gone by Of young affection and velvet sky A slave to greed... I do not feel regret anymore I sense the presence of birds Encircling me... And I am gone Til jord skal vi bli Dark is the night Dead is the moon I will not kneel I'd rather die Facing my doom
