Necessity is the mother of invention is an English-language proverb. It means, roughly, that the primary driving force for most new inventions is a need.
Meaning
In Oxford Dictionary the proverb has been defined as– when the need for something becomes imperative, you are forced to find ways of getting or achieving it.
According to Cambridge Dictionary, this is "an expression that means that if you really need to do something, you will think of a way of doing it."
Longman dictionary has defined the proverb as– "if someone really needs to do something, they will find a way of doing it."
History
The author of this proverb is unknown. This phrase was familiar in England, but in Latin, not in English. In 1519, headmaster of Winchester and Eton, William Horma used the Latin phrase "Mater artium necessitas" in his book "Vulgaria". In 1545 Roger Ascham used a close English version of "Necessitie, the inuentour of all goodnesse" in his book "Toxophilus". In 1608, George Chapman also, in his two-part play "The Conspiracy and Tragedy of Charles, Duke of Byron" used a very similar phrase– "The great Mother, Of all productions (graue Necessity)." But, the earliest actual usage of the proverb "Necessity is the mother of invention" is sometimes ascribed to Richard Franck who used it in his book "Northern Memoirs", calculated for the meridian of Scotland (1658)

Plot
The film follows Vincent Dooly (Andrew Bowser), an aspiring inventor who dreams of winning the Thomas Alva Edison Award for Young Inventors (or "Eddy"). Each year, he enters and each year he humiliates himself with an invention that malfunctions in one way or another. A documentary crew follows Vincent in the last year that he is eligible to compete for the award, at the same time following Martin Wooderson (Jimmi Simpson), a smug wunderkind with a long history of winning the award with dull but marketable inventions. Through the months leading up to the Eddy's, Vincent mentions (in a clandestine manner) an invention he is working on that he is sure will change his losing streak but refuses to reveal more. We meet Vincent's best friend Gunter (F. Jason Whitaker), his endlessly supportive mother (Dee Wallace), his tweaked-out father (Mark Boone Junior), the object of his affection (Ruby Wendell) and his hero, a surly junkyard worker (Kevin Corrigan).
The story of how Ted met The Mother is the framing device behind the series; many facts about her are revealed throughout the series, including the fact that Ted once unwittingly owned her umbrella before accidentally leaving it behind in her apartment. Ted and The Mother meet at the Farhampton train station following Barney and Robin's wedding; this scene is shown in "Last Forever", the series finale. The Mother's death from an unspecified terminal illness in 2024, also revealed in the series finale, received a mixed reaction from fans.

Plot
May (played by Anne Reid) is an ordinary grandmother from Northern England. When her husband dies on a family visit to London, she recedes into the background of her busy, metropolitan children's lives. Trapped in an unfamiliar city, far from home, May fears that she has become another invisible old lady whose life is more or less over. She embarks on a sexual affair with Darren (Daniel Craig), a married handyman half her age who is renovating her son's house and is also her daughter's lover. As her sexual desire soon turns to emotional longing, May unwittingly embroils herself into a point-of-no-return situation with devastating results for all those surrounding her.
