It's said that Walter Sickert often told the tale of a guest house he'd stayed in where the landlord claimed that he'd suspected the previous occupant of Sickert's room to have been Jack the Ripper. Marie Belloc Lowndes used this as the basis of her own dark story of sinister nocturnal to-ings and fro-ings, filmed several times... Here, the ever-dependable Stephen Sheridan gives us a radio adaptation.

He’s the lodger trying hard to blend in
As he stalks his prey
He’s no killer but he can’t let this man just walk away
He thinks of nothing but this
I’ll bring my brand of justice
Vengeance is mine said the lodger
Vengeance is mine
The night he got there heavy fog rollin’ in
The landlord did say
Is he the killer? That poor girl had no chance
The man was depraved
But now the lodger lives there
Cause that dead girl was his sister
Vengeance is mine said the lodger
Vengeance is mine
Gonna find him gotta find him
When I find him they’ll never find him
A policeman caught the killer
Now he and I can tell her
Vengeance is mine said the lodger

▸▸The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog is a 1927 British silent film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It is based on a 1913 novel of the same name by Marie Belloc Lowndes. The film tells the story of a mysterious lodger who rents a room in the home of a London family, and is suspected of being the infamous "Avenger" serial killer who is terrorizing the city. The film explores themes of suspicion, guilt, and the nature of evil. It is considered to be one of Hitchcock's early masterpieces and an important film in the history of British cinema.
Throughout the film, Hitchcock uses a variety of visual techniques such as Expressionist lighting, chiaroscuro, and distorted sets to create a sense of unease and paranoia. The film also features many of the stylistic flourishes that would become hallmarks of Hitchcock's later work, such as the use of point-of-view shots, tracking shots, and montages.
PLOT
The story begins with a series of murders being committed in London by a serial killer known as "The Avenger." The murders are causing widespread panic in the city, and the police are under pressure to catch the killer.
Meanwhile, a young couple, Daisy and Joe Bunting, rent a room in their boarding house to a mysterious lodger, who they suspect may be the Avenger. Despite their suspicions, Daisy becomes increasingly attracted to the lodger and begins to fall in love with him.
As the lodger's behavior becomes increasingly strange and erratic, Daisy becomes convinced that he is the Avenger. She confides her suspicions to her brother, a police detective, who is also investigating the murders.
The lodger is eventually arrested and put on trial, but Daisy's testimony is inconclusive, and he is acquitted. However, as the lodger is leaving the courtroom, a woman in the crowd recognizes him as the Avenger, and he is finally caught and brought to justice.
The film ends with Daisy and Joe happily married, and the Avenger is behind bars.
