Frances Day (real name Frances Victoria Schenck, December 16, 1908 – April 29, 1984) was an American actress and singer who achieved great popularity in the UK in the 1930s.
Day's career began as a nightclub cabaret singer in New York City and London. She toured the provinces in 1930 and made her London stage debut at the Hippodrome in 1932. In the 1950s she was a regular panellist on the British version of the popular TV series What's My Line?
A busload of passengers, including off-duty police detective Dave Evans, is gunned down and killed. Evans, on his own time, has been following a man named Gus Niles in search of information linking businessman Henry Camarero to the murder of his wife, Teresa, two years earlier.
Evans was the partner of Detective Sergeant Jake Martin, a veteran but cynical member of the Homicide Detail working the bus massacre investigation. Jake originally investigated the Teresa Camarero case and has been obsessed with his failure to "make" Camarero for the murder. Jake returns to it after many dead-end leads (including a disasterous confrontation with a deranged amputee who takes hostages at gunpoint) in the bus investigation. Niles was killed on the bus as well, and it was Niles who provided the alibi that enabled Camarero to cover up his wife's murder.
The Laughing Policeman (1968), by Sjöwall and Wahlöö, is the fourth police detective novel, in the ten-part Martin Beck series. Originally published in Sweden in 1968 as Den skrattande polisen, it is the first novel in the series to criticize the shortcomings of the Swedish welfare state. In 1971, The Laughing Policeman earned a 'Best Novel' Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America. The American police procedural film, The Laughing Policeman (1973) featuring Walter Matthau, is a loose adaptation of the novel.
Explanation of the title
The novel's title, The Laughing Policeman, derives from a 1922 song so titled. When Detective Beck receives the record as a Christmas gift from his daughter, Ingrid, he does not think it funny; his first laugh comes when the dead Det. Åke Stenström is vindicated.
Plot
A gunman shoots the passengers of a public transport bus with a sub-machine gun; he kills eight people (including Detective Åke Stenström), and wounds one. Detective Beck and his team suspect the mass-murder is to disguise the murder of Detective Stenström, who was spending his free time investigating the sixteen-year-old murder of a Portuguese prostitute. Before that we see the technicality of the story, where Beck tries and removes all the cover from the murder at the bus. In a painstaking investigation, it turns out that Strenström had been attempting to solve an old murder before the statue of limitations ran out and he actually was on the verge of solving this case. Because of Stenström's work; Martin Beck and his colleagues can not only solve this earlier murder, but the attack on the bus.
The Laughing Policeman is a music hall song by Charles Jolly, the pseudonym of Charles Penrose. In 1922, Penrose made the first recording of this song, (Columbia Records FB 1184). The composition of the song is officially credited to his wife Mabel under the pseudonym "Billie Grey", however the music and melody are taken from The Laughing Song by George W. Johnson which was recorded in approximately 1901. The Penroses wrote numerous other laughing songs (The Laughing Major, Curate, Steeplechaser, Typist, Lover, etc), but only The Laughing Policeman is remembered today, having sold over a million records. Its popularity continued into the 1970s, as it was a frequently-requested song on the BBC Radio 1 show Junior Choice.

I've got you under my skin. I've got you deep in the heart of me. So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me. I've got you under my skin. I'd tried so not to give in. I said to myself, this affair never will go so well. But why should I try to resist when, baby, I know down well I've got you under my skin? I'd sacrifice anything come what might For the sake of havin' you near In spite of a warnin' voice that comes in the night And repeats, repeats in my ear, Don't you know, you fool, you never can win? Use your mentality, wake up to reality. But each time that I do just the thought of you Makes me stop before I begin Cause I've got you under my skin. I would sacrifice anything come what might For the sake of havin' you near In spite of the warning voice that comes in the night And repeats, how it yells in my ear, Don't you know, you fool, ain't no chance to win Why not use your mentality, get up, wake up to reality? And each time I do just the thought of you Makes me stop just before I begin Cause I've got you under my skin.
