John Joseph "Jack" Haley (August 10, 1898 – June 6, 1979) was an American vaudevillian, stage, radio, and film actor, light comedian, singer and dancer best known for his portrayal of the Tin Man in the classic 1939 MGM film The Wizard of Oz.
Early life
Haley was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Canadian-born parents John Joseph Haley Sr. and Ellen Curley Haley. His father was a sailor by trade and died in a ship wreck off the coast of Nova Scotia on February 1, 1899 when Jack was only six months old. He had one older brother, Bill, who died of pneumonia in 1915 at the age of 20 after contracting tuberculosis.
Haley was drafted in 1987 by the Chicago Bulls and made his NBA debut on November 9, 1988.
After several years playing elsewhere, Haley returned to the Bulls as a free agent in October 1995 and was a member of the 1995–96 Bulls team which won a league-record 72 games and the NBA Championship. However, Haley spent almost the entire season on the injured list with tendinitis in his left knee. As a result, he only played in one game during the regular season and did not participate in the playoffs. At one point, another unidentified team complained to the league office, which sent out a doctor to examine Haley's knee. At the same time, Haley developed a reputation for his enthusiastic cheering of his teammates on the Bulls' bench all season long, compared to what one newspaper described as a more somber Bulls' bench.
Strong-willed, widowed schoolteacher Anna Leonowens arrives in Bangkok from Wales with her young son Louis after being summoned to tutor the many children of King Mongkut. The two are introduced to the Kralahome, King Mongkut's confidante and Siam's prime minister. His severe countenance makes Louis apprehensive, but Anna refuses to be intimidated and convinces him to disguise his fear ("I Whistle a Happy Tune"). The Kralahome explains he has come to escort them to the Royal Palace where they will live – a violation of Anna's contract, which calls for them to live in a separate house outside the walls of the palace. Despite her threat to return to Singapore, Anna reluctantly disembarks with Louis and the Kralahome.
The King and I is a musical, the fifth by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical's plot relates the experiences of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the piece, as well as by a love that neither can admit. The musical premiered on March 29, 1951, at Broadway's St. James Theatre. It ran nearly three years, then the fourth longest-running Broadway musical in history, and has had many tours and revivals.
In 1950, theatrical attorney Fanny Holtzmann was looking for a part for her client, veteran leading lady Gertrude Lawrence. Holtzmann realized that Landon's book would provide an ideal vehicle and contacted Rodgers and Hammerstein, who were initially reluctant but agreed to write the musical. The pair initially sought Rex Harrison to play the supporting part of the King, a role that he had played in the 1946 film made from Landon's book, but he was unavailable. They settled on the young actor and television director Yul Brynner.
Jack Haley's 12th Man Swagger was Completely Out of Control
March 5, 1995 - One would be hard-pressed to find another player in NBA history who embraced their garbage time role more with more vigor than Jack Haley. Appearing in just 31 of 82 games? An average of 3.8 minutes during said appearance? Haley was completely unphased. Largely known as Dennis Rodman's right-hand man (he'd follow Rodman to Chicago) Haley soaked it all up in the Spurs' 124-103 win over the Houston Rockets. In less than 60 seconds of action, Haley worked in a 3-point play and a last second jumper before strutting off into the sunset with Rodman in tow.
Classic Jack Haley.

Happy Jack wasn't old, but he was a man He lived in the sand at the Isle of Man The kids would all sing, he would take the wrong key So they rode on his head on their furry donkey The kids couldn't hurt Jack They tried and tried and tried They dropped things on his back And lied and lied and lied and lied and lied But they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping And they couldn't prevent Jack from feeling happy But they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping And they couldn't prevent Jack from feeling happy The kids couldn't hurt Jack They tried and tried and tried They dropped things on his back And lied and lied and lied and lied and lied But they couldn't stop Jack, or the waters lapping And they couldn't prevent Jack from feeling happy (I saw ya!)
