History of Pirates 1 | കടൽക്കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ ചരിത്രം | Tortuga | Julius Manuel | HisStories
Pirates have been around since the dawn of time. They posed a menace to ancient Greece's commerce channels, seizing grain and olive oil cargoes from Roman ships. The Vikings were the most famous and far-reaching pirates in early Middle Ages Europe. Between 1650 and 1720, tens of thousands of pirates were active. Piracy's 'Golden Age' is commonly referred to as these years. Blackbeard (Edward Teach), Henry Morgan, William 'Captain' Kidd, 'Calico' Jack Rackham, and Bartholomew Roberts are among famous pirates from this time period.
During this period, both affluent and poor people heard about piracy. On the streets, people sang ballads about current events. For the price of a cup of coffee, newspapers might be read for free at coffee shops. The more well-known pirates' deeds drew a wide ra...

Spindly trees, rusted gates, crumbling stone, a solitary mourner: these things come to mind when we think of cemeteries. But not long ago, many burial grounds were lively places, with gardens and crowds of people -- and for much of human history, we didn’t bury our dead at all. How did cemeteries become what they are today? Keith Eggener delves into our ever-evolving rituals for honoring the dead.

They are particularly notable for the large number and diversity of pelagic seabirds and penguins that nest there.
Seal hunting, or sealing, is the personal or commercial hunting of seals. Seals have been used for their pelts, their flesh, and their fat, which was often used as lamp fuel, lubricants, cooking oil, a constituent of soap, the liquid base for red ochre paint, and for processing materials such as leather and jute. The first commercial hunting of seals by Europeans, is said to have occurred in 1515, when a cargo of fur seal skins from Uruguay was sent to Spain for sale in the markets of Seville.
This video is about some curious and interesting stories during sealing era. The video focused in Subantarctic Islands lies below Australia and New Zealand.

Lyrics
[Harry:]
You gotta help me, I'm losing my mind
Keep getting the feeling you wanna leave this all behind
Thought we were going strong
I thought we were holding on
Aren't we?
[Niall:]
No, they don't teach you this in school
Now my heart's breaking and I don't know what to do
Thought we were going strong
Thought we were holding on
Aren't we?
[All:]
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
So don't let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever
[Liam:]
All of the rumors, all of the fights
But we always find a way to make it out alive
Thought we were going strong
Thought we were holding on
Aren't we?
[All:]
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
So don't let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever
[Louis:]
Mini bars, expensive cars, hotel rooms, and new tattoos
And the good champagne, and private planes, but they don't mean anything
'Cause the truth is out, I realize that without you here life is just a lie
This is not the end
This is not the end
We can make it, you know it, you know
[All:]
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
So don't let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever
[All:]
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen
You and me got a whole lot of history (oh)
So don't let it go, we can make some more, we can live forever

So don't let me go
So don't let me go

An Ancient Greek's Modern Blueprint: Polybius' approach to religion in 'The Histories'
Paper given by Dr. Georgina Longley at the "Opening the Ancient World" virtual conference, hosted by Digital Hammurabi and the Save Ancient Studies Alliance (https://www.saveancientstudies.org/).
This paper seeks to demonstrate how by ‘Opening up the Ancient World’, we can open up our own. My primary focus will be on the methods and approaches of Greek historian, Polybius. My doctoral research showed how the scope and range of the Greek term, politeia, furnished Polybius with a sophisticated model for the analysis, not only of Rome, but also the other peoples with which he deals in his work. Polybius’ sixth book, which contains his account of the Roman politeia, does not only describe the political workings of the Roman government, which he classes as a ‘mixed-politeia’, composed of three...

041: Polybius of Megalopolis - Historian of the Hellenistic Age
Polybius of Megalopolis (~200 - 118 B.C.) was a Greek nobleman and high ranking member of the Achaean League, whose political career was prematurely ended when he was taken as a political hostage to Rome. Rather than disappearing into obscurity, Polybius took it upon himself to compose a "universal" history, so as to explain to his fellow Greeks how the Romans managed to conquer the inhabited world in only 50 years. In this episode, we are going to spend time discussing the life and works of Polybius, who provides us with not only the best written account from the Hellenistic period, but is also one of the finest historians the Greco-Roman world has ever produced.

------
Description: Polybius was a Greek historian of the Hellenistic period noted for his work The Histories, which covered the period of 264–146 BC in detail. The work describes the rise of the Roman Republic to the status of dominance in the ancient Mediterranean world and includes his eyewitness account of the Sack of Carthage in 146 BC. Polybius is important for his analysis of the mixed constitution or the separation of powers in government, which was influential on Montesquieu's The Spirit of the Laws and the framers of the United States Constitution.

Polybius, the greek hostage that wrote roman history
Polybius, the greek man that was taken hostage by Rome only to later work with them and write their history.
For this video ive used quite alot of different sources, ive used polybiuses histories, SPQR by Mary beard, and a biography that followed with a Norwegian copy of the histories by Polybius called Kanon. Also some Plutarch parallel lives but that's more so for the next video.
There isn't a lot know about Polybius and his life and so this video is more so diving into his world and how he might have seen it and felt about it by putting ourselves in his shoes and his time. I think that the real story here is the strange place he found himself in, at the cross roads of hellenistic dominance and latin dominance. I think it must have been quite the feeling to watch the world you know b...

BOOK DESCRIPTION
How did the city state of Rome rise inexorably to become the dominant power in the Mediterranean and much of the Western world?
In short, first of all it overcame the established Carthaginian Empire despite the remarkable exploits of Hannibal. And, largely at the same time, it gradually subjugated the many and varied city states of Greece, despite various allied opposition.
The rise of Rome is one of the great stories of world history, and fortunately, we have a reliable and at times an eyewitness account, from the Greek historian Polybius of Megalopolis (c200 BCE-c117 BCE). In The Histories, Polybius set out to present as full an account as he could, with the historical background, the causes of disagreement leading to conflict, the main naval and land battles and the acts of heroism, cowardice, imagination and folly.
In addition, he provided lucid explanations of the diplomacy, the treaties and portraits of the main personalities. He encompassed the whole story in 40 books, a considerable undertaking. He started his tale in 264 BCE as Rome challenged Carthage and concluded with the capture of Corinth in 146 BCE. It is a century (and more) of almost continuous conflict in one field or another. These were brutal times of torture, slaughter, enslavement, where power was wielded for dominance, but there were examples of honourable engagement and considered diplomacy. Extended periods of warfare brought new military ideas and tactics, as Rome learned to combat Carthaginian expertise on sea and on land. Siege machinery was developed on both sides (the skills of Archimedes in the defence of Syracuse is mentioned) and the famous Greek phalanx was pitted against the Roman legions.
Polybius reports on the main confrontations with the authority of a man who was present at many events and also visited historic sites of importance to ensure his accounts of the past were accurate. In The Histories, he gives rounded portraits of the important figures of Hannibal and other Carthaginian generals: of Scipio Africanus (who finally stopped Hannibal at the Battle of Zama) and other Roman general, of Philip V of Macedon, of Antiochus the Great, ruler of the Seleucid Empire and of the Ptolemies of Egypt.
The rise of Rome is a story of two main arenas - the West (Carthage, Spain, Northern Italy and Illyria) and the East - Greece! In trying to maintain some kind of chronological flow, Polybius has little option but to switch the focus from one to another, sometimes at short…

Polybius’ sixth book, which contains his account of the Roman politeia, does not only describe the political workings of the Roman government, which he classes as a ‘mixed-politeia’, composed of three different political elements: kingship, aristocracy, and democracy. Polybius also includes a theory of historical causation, Roman military organisation, religious customs, economic attitudes, public and private displays and practices, popular stories. In short, this is a rich model through which a society and its people’s behaviour can he analysed.
These many different areas build up the whole picture. It is a model highly relevant for our own times. I am not the first to make this argument. Polybius was an important inspiration for International Relations’ theorist, Hans Morgenthau, in his work, Politics Among Nations. What I shall be arguing is that Polybius’ holistic approach to the analysis of peoples can offer us a better understanding of our own society and others. It is very easy to look at a single aspect of a nation in isolation and praise or criticise it. But what does this system or practice tell us about the society as whole? What is the relationship between the people and the ruling element? Polybius offers us a sophisticated tool for taking a broader approach to exploring and asking questions about the world around us.

I think it must have been quite the feeling to watch the world you know be shaped by people you considered backwater barbarians at some point. To be sure, Polybius wasn't the first to have this feeling and isn't the last either.
I am currently working on the next video about him that will also dive into people like, Cato the elder, Scipio Aemilianus, Mummius and maybe more. I haven't finished writing it yet.
Anyway if there any questions go ahead and comment it.
