ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Margaret Mahy was a New Zealand children's author. Mahy was influential in changing the landscape of children's literature in her homeland and was one of the most prolific authors, penning more than 120 titles. Her output included poetry, picture books and works for older children, teenage novels, television scripts and stories for magazines and newspapers. Margaret began writing children's books in earnest at the age of eighteen, while training to be a children's librarian in Christchurch. Her big break came fifteen years later when an American publisher came across A Lion in the Meadow and bought it, along with all the other work Margaret had produced over the years. Margaret became a full-time writer in 1980 and wrote The Haunting, which was the first novel outside the United Kingdom to win the Carnegie Medal. She triumphed again two years later with The Changeover. In 2006 Margaret was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international honour given to an author…

Hello Everyone and Welcome to this The Address Summary by Marga Minco , Presented to you by Beaming Notes.
Voice-Over and Narration : Anushree Sen
********************************************************************
The story starts on a interrogatory note, with the narrator, a young girl, asking a woman whether she recognizes her. This sets the tone of the story from the beginning, pointing out that this story is quest of finding herself, rather than just finding some mere commodities. The woman’s mannerisms are a clear indicator
that she is hesitant and uncomfortable on the girl’s arrival. She does not invite the girl inside her house and instead deals with her on the step outside. She denies that she knows her. The woman is conscious of not letting the girl se the inside of the house, which is a suspicious behaviour clearly showing the woman’s insecurity.
But the woman’s face showed no signs of recognition which is possible for she had more interaction with the narrator’s mother, Mrs. S. The woman’s behaviour made the narrator doubt that whether she was at the correct place or not. It was possible for the narrator had seen the woman only once that too in a passing. The
narrator was unsure of herself until she saw the woman wearing her mother’s cardigan. Although the woman hid herself behind the door, the narrator could see the faded buttons, signifying that the sweater was worn often. The narrator asked the woman if she knew the narrator’s mother. The woman instead of answering
expresses her dismay. She asks if the narrator has returned to which the narrator answers that only she had.
The woman is referring to concentration camps where the narrator’s family had been deported like all the other Jewish families during the Nazi invasion. Minco’s own family had been deported and she was the lone survivor. We can thus say
that the narrator is an autobiographical reflection of the author.
The woman is unwelcoming, uncooperative, refuses to help the narrator and tries to avoid any encounter at all with the narrator. The reader can perceive the guilt in the woman’s action. The woman claims inconvenience and asks the narrator to come another time. The woman went inside while the narrator stood
on the step outside. The narrator could hear the woman talking to someone on the inside, from whom the woman hid the narrator’s identity.
Till now, the narrator did not reveal the woman’s identity. Now we come to know her as Mrs. Dorling, of house number 46. The narrator begins to explain the context of this encounter. She had got this address years ago from her mother. In the first half of the War, the narrator had visited her mother, where she had noticed that a few things were missing from the rooms. Her mother had
claimed that Mrs. Dorling was doing all this out of goodwill, to save all their good things incase they were taken away someday. Her mother was oblivious to her ulterior motive and thought that Mrs. Dorling was doing them a favour and the narrator could not convince her otherwise.
